WASHINGTON John McCain and the Republican Party won a fundraising round from Democratic rival Barack Obama and his record-setting money machine in May, together raising a total of $45 million, some $20 million more than the Democrats.
But Obama, by raising $21.9 million, shattered the presidential fundraising record for the primary election season. In his first report to the Federal Election Commission since his precedent-setting decision to spurn public funding for the fall campaign, Obama disclosed that he collected $287.5 million since entering the race last year.
President Bush held the previous primary-season record, raising $269.6 million en route to reelection in 2004.
The Republican National Committee, which brought in $24 million in May, far out-distanced the Democratic National Committee's $4.7 million. With McCain's $21.5 million, the GOP gained an overall edge for the month. The party committees devote nearly all of their funds to support their presidential candidates.
McCain has raised a total of $112 million so far and can raise and spend money until the primary season officially ends with the GOP convention in September. Because he agreed to accept public financing of the general election, McCain will be limited to $84.1 million in federal money during the roughly two-month campaign.
Obama spokesman Bill Burton said that the GOP edge was ``no surprise,'' asserting that McCain's acceptance of donations from lobbyists and political action committees gives him an advantage that only can be overcome ``with the help of our grassroots supporters.''
But Larry Sabato, a University of Virginia political scientist, said he expects Obama's fund raising power to be stunning.
``With the kind of (fundraising) lists that Obama's got, the sky's the limit,'' he said, pointing to Obama's massive donations via the Internet in recent months. ``The small donor potential is just enormous.''

Larry Sabato, now that is an independent source. LMAO!
Time is running out to donate to McCain. Once the public financing deadline hits, you won’t be able to do so.
For all his faults, he’s still better than Obama. And he seems to be drifting ever so slightly to the right, while Obama continues to lurch leftward.
If he puts that goofball on the ticket I really will LOL.
Unfortunately, Sabato is probably right. When Obama officially gets the nomination, he’ll be able to take donations from the people who’ve already donated. You can pretty much expect that his take will double.
That’s why he is so intent on restricting the debates. He knows that he’s just giving McCain free face time, while he can afford to pay for it.
The GOP would be well advised to go over Obama’s donor list to see if they can scrape up a scandal or two.
Sorry. I don't give money to socialists, not even "Republican" ones. I'm not about to start now.
Money you are saving would be taken from you by the Socialist who are going to come to power because of your crazy logic.
He only has 30 million in the bank. Osama spent it all. Hitlery spent another 200 million rat dollars to lose, and still owes tens of millions. Obama is also spending money at a faster pace then he is raising it for the last 2 months.
Sabato, et al, seem to forget that President Bush is a phenomenal fundraiser in his own right who just happens to be the reason that the RNC has raised so much money — dwarfing the DNC and all non-Sorosesque Obama fundraising this spring and early June.
[FYI: Sabato predicted that Kerry would win in 2004 — so much for his credibility and objectivity!]
When President MacCain amnesties 20,000,000 illegal aliens, with chain migration, the triumph of socialism will be assured. But, you can live out your days peacefully, happy in the knowledge that it was a Republican who ensured its final victory in America.
What do you think President Obama would do? Hmmmmm?
At least you won’t have to see Al Qaida dance in streets of Baghdad, Hang on to your Guns and Money, have a strong Military and maybe get one more SC judge.
You are throwing away all that because of one thing they both MIGHT do.
What fundraising gap?
odumbo and his hate whitey wife just scare me too much!!
If they have to trot out Larry Sabato, there must be some truth to the story that McCain isn’t being out-raised by a huge margin.
For the last twenty years the GOP has played the same meme: Vote for {fill in name of GOP candidate} because even though he's crap, {fill in name of democrat candidate} is a much bigger piece of crap. I bought it every four years from 1988 to 2004, starting with Poppy Bush, dutifully voting for the GOP candidate. Each time their candidate for the Presidency slithered further and further to the left.
With MacCain they reached the line I will NOT cross. He is a liar and has no honor, blithely betraying his supporters whenever it's politically expedient. With him it always was, always is and always will be what's good for "The John".
I've been a conservative all my life. I've endured personal and professional loss for being a conservative. I will not spit on everything I stood for by voting for an egomaniac so psychotic that he makes Bill Clinton look like the epitome of mental health.
Well, darn! That is GOOD news. Even if I don’t like McCain or care that much for the current GOP...
This was in May only.
Good Question. Lamar Alexander has been sending surveys and donation requests to me. How he knows where I live now I’ll leave alone.
So you are saying “screw you guys, I’m going home”? :-)

I’m curious; how has supporting immigration been good for any Republican, particularly someone like McCain who comes from a border state (Arizona) where many residents are fed up with the illegals?
I expect Obama’s fund raising to be stunning, too. I think that is a given.
It’s posturing. Sheriff Joe done took Washington out of the equation as far as Maricopa County is concerned.
If or when you do, who are you going to get to report it?
Yes, and McCain has been consistently pulling in solid amounts while Obama has been falling dramatically in the last couple months ($45m to $35m to $22m), and Obama has no such powerhouse equivalent as the RNC Victory fund which has been raking an average of about $20m a month.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find out a big chunk Obama’s campaign cash is coming directly out of terrorist coffers. I mean, Hillary was getting huge amounts of money from poor people who were getting repaid for the use of their names. Has Obama’s donor base been looked at even half as closely?
I don’t know precisely when the deadline is. Logically, he should be able to raise funds all the way up until he’s nominated, but I’m not sure if that is legally what the deadline is.
I do know though that a buddy of mine who’s raising money for McCain told me that McCain was only going to make one fundraising pass thru our area because of the prohibition on private contributions during the general election campaign, and that if I did not give at that time, there would be no one to solicit my donation later.
Conservatives, and even some Republicans at ground level, recognize that amnestying illegal aliens will be bad for Republicans. However, GW Bush and the rest locked within their gated communities don't realize how bad it will ultimately be for conservatism, or they just don't give a rat's rearend, ignorantly believing that the destruction it will cause the nation can never touch them.
Since I'm NOT voting for the socialist Obama, you're point is moot.
And when did I say I was voting for Obama? Because I'm not.
Let me guess, you’re upset that Ron Paul didn’t win, so now you want McCain to lose because Obama shares your views on subjects like foreign policy and the Patriot Act anyhow.
