Arctic sea ice is melting even faster than last year, despite a cold winter.
Data from the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) shows that the year began with ice covering a larger area than at the beginning of 2007.
But now it is down to levels seen last June, at the beginning of a summer that broke records for sea ice loss.
Scientists on the project say that much of the ice is so thin that it melts easily, and the Arctic may be ice-free in summer within five to 10 years.
I think we're going to beat last year's record, though I'd love to be wrong
"We had a bit more ice in the winter, although we were still way below the long-term average," said Julienne Stroeve from NSIDC in Boulder, Colorado

Been a busy enviro-whacko day Ping!
maybe we could just pump the excess water into space with giant sump pumps! LOL!
I hope so. It makes it much easier to hunt polar bear.
Our tax dollars put to good use.

Hmmm, thats wierd because there was trucks driving on it not so long ago!
“But now it is down to levels seen last June...”
OH NOOOOOOOO! What are we going to dooooooo? Were down to levels not seen since last June and we’re only in the month of ... oh .. . ah....June.
Perfect example of the Garbage In, Garbage Out problem in action.
Damned if the same thing didn’t happen in 960 AD, when the relatively ice-free, relatively calm waters of the north let the Vikings into North America.
It’s almost like there’s a connection between the Mediaeval warm period and the modern one. I just can’t put my finger on it.
Plowing the artic ocean ice!
No but we could drain it into the Quattara Depression and significantly improve the climate of North Africa.
“We had a bit more ice in the winter, although we were still way below the long-term average,”
Believe it or not when individual elements are compared to an average approxiamtely 1/2 will be below and 1/2 will be above the average.
Let me guess.... could the connection be...... THE SUN?
It the absolute Law of Melting Ice. The colder the weather, the faster the ice melts. The warmer the weather that faster the ice melts.
Because it’s always melting. Now send us your money.
Yeah, and my GAWD, it's as warm this June as we haven't seen since ... last June.
I wonder if that tourist icebreaker that got stuck in the ice is unstuck yet.
Imagine that, with it being June and all right now.
Man's failing is that he tries to put EVERYTHING to mathematics....and it simply can't be done.
Southern Hemisphere Sea Ice Reaches Unprecedented Levels
http://www.climateaudit.org/?p=3066
No ice for the polar bears to sit on...They’re gonna drown
“Julienne Stroeve from NSIDC in Boulder, Colo”
That right there totally discredits the report!
BUT LOOK SOUTH!!!
Meanwhile, the May 2008 Southern Hemisphere sea ice extent exceeded the 1979-2000 mean. This was the third greatest sea ice extent in May (7.4 percent above the 1979-2000 mean) over the 30-year historical period, behind 2000 and 1996. Sea ice extent for May has increased at a rate of 1.8 percent per decade.

The average global temperature, if there is such a thing, hasn’t increased in 10 years. It was a cold winter. But the ice is melting faster?
I think I need further explaination.
What a complete crock of BS. Take a look at the two satellite images for today compared to this date last year and visually you can see more melting last year at this time than now. Play with the dates and you can see the decrease of ice with time last year. Of course, the satellite info only goes back to 1979, but we know that there was little ice in summer in some earlier years. This isn’t a new occurrence.

The Southern Sea ice is 1.5 milluion square kilometers larger now that it was in 1980.

I wrote the Dr. in Australia that claims we are in global warming and asked how come the South has larger ice that in many, many years and he said:
“Whenever you limit the context of your considerations in any way, your conclusions have to be wrong.
The only way to have any chance of correct conclusions is to admit the global picture for consideration.”
this is a bunch of hooey! We were driving the ice roads to Alpine and Oooguruk Island until the middle of MAY!!! the roads official closure date id the middle of April to day time traffic, and the end of April to any traffic. The bridges between Prudhoe Bay and Kuparuk never flooded, because the river never went out all at once, as it NORMALLY does. the river just kind of thawed out. There is still a huge amount of snowpack in the mountains, especially the Brooks Range. We shall see how quickly winter reclaims her territory this year...
FANTASTIC! Will really make next years season 3 of Ice Road Truckers that much more exciting!
simple, move the polar bears who are starving at the north pole south, theres plenty of penguins to eat.
GW BS bump
“Scientists on the project say that much of the ice is so thin that it melts easily, and the Arctic may be ice-free in summer within five to 10 years.”
I sure hope that’s true...all these drastic changes excite me. Just think of the great new things we might find...and the cool new places for vacations!!
Now we can drill for oil there.
One more thing and on this I am serious...Selling every single thing we have and buying a very large Yacht to live on is looking better all the time!
THAT does it for me!!
How high have sea levels risen and in what time frame? I have never seem any reference to data on that in any of these Glowbull Warming rants.

Spock: "The polar ice caps are melting."
Q: "Oh, dear. How will the polar bears make their martinis?"
It's mid JUNE - We call that SUMMMER in the Northern Hemisphere.... Morons...
“though I’d love to be wrong”
liar.
Do they have a similar site for Southern Hemisphere data?
Don't know.
Send tanker ships up there and bring the water here to coastal Georgia.
Weren’t the Brits proposing to tow an iceberg down for their water needs a few years ago?
INTREP
Hope. Change.
You’re very good to have caught those two well placed words! ;>)
Well, last year was a record low year for summer arctic sea ice, so we’re on pace with that. I’ve been watching the MODIS RAPID RESPONSE page, so I’ve been wating to hear something like this. The Beaufort Sea, north of Alaska, has a very similar appearance to last year. In the summer of 2006 it was still covered with ice in August.
