Urgent: House Democrats call for nationalization of refineries
Per Pergram-Capitol Hill
House Democrats responded to President's Bush's call for Congress to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling. This was at an on-camera press conference fed back live.
Among other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply.
They also reasserted that the reason the Appropriations Committee markup (where the vote on the amendment to lift the ban) was cancelled so they could focus on preparing the supplemental Iraq spending bill for tomorrow.
At an off-camera briefing, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said the same. And a senior Republican House Appropriations Committee aide adds that "there were multiple reasons for the postponement" including discussion on the supplemental. But the aide said there was the thought that Democrats may wish to avoid a debate today on energy amendments.
Here are the highlights from briefing
Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), member of the House Appropriations Committee and one of the most-ardent opponents of off-shore drilling

We (the government) should own the refineries. Then we can control how much gets out into the market.
Hinchey on why they postponed the Appropriations markup
1119
I think there aren't enough votes for the Peterson amendment. It wasn't taken up (the Interior spending bill) because of the omnibus Appropriations bill. That's the main focus of the Appropriations Committee.
Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL)
1116
They (Republicans) have a one-trick pony approach.
Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV), Chairman of the Resources Committee
1106
You cannot drill your way out of this.
Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), chairman of the House Select Committee on Global Warming
1111
The White House has become a ventriloquist for the oil and gas energy.

I call for the nationalization of the restaurant serving the Senate. Oh wait, that was a money losing boondoggle so they privatized it to make it work better. Now, what were we talking about again?
Huh?
The Democrat Party has become overtly Marxist.
Hugo Chavez will be proud of you, Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY)!
Wow - so this is their solution to high gas prices? Stealing? And it’s so nice they’re giving themselves the power to do it. :D How wonderful.
Well, they want change and Communism would be change.
Wow - so this is their solution to high gas prices? Stealing? And it’s so nice they’re giving themselves the power to do it. :D How wonderful.
all i can say is drill here and drill now.
Again.
Just nationalize everything in the USSA.
Maybe a Reagan will appear in France someday to take us down.
Heeyaw.
This is a win-win for them.
It’s boob-bait for the bubbas, and if it gets enough momentum to be serious, it’ll tip the financial markets into a panic and touch off a deep recession.
Both are good news for the party of entropy.
What happened to the good old days when people who made these types of proposals were blacklisted and driven underground?
The same folks who ran the post office want to run the oil industry - sheesh.
Yep.
Nutjob Nancypants Pelosi is bleating on about "Americans (that) are suffering under the Bush-Cheney-McCain policies that were written by Big Oil" and how "we possess less than 2 percent of the worlds supply."
Harry Reid is monkey-hooting "we cannot drill our way out" and the "huge tax breaks President Bush and Republican Congresses have given oil and gas companies to invest in refineries" that the liberal enviro-whackjobs will not allow to be built.
I wonder what is next, screeching and throwing their turds into the observation balcony?
Here for all the world to see is the neo-Marxism wing of the Democratic party on the verge of completely destroying our economy for the sake of destroying President Bush’s legacy. Our country desperately needs to “Drill Here NOW!” and yet the neo-Marxists and evironmental wackos are doing everything to deny Americans gasoline needed to get to work and keep food coming to grocery store shelves. It is a classic communist control tactic to starve the masses in order to destroy any opposition to a communist takeover of our government.
Also 30% of last year’s corn is being diverted from food to 3% of our need for gasoline, at great cost to taxpayers in the form of subsidies. Let’s face it: prudence demands that with this year’s corn crop lost to flood waters in Iowa, no more corn should be allowed to be converted to fuel.
Democrats present themselves as the solution to a problem they created. This was their plan all along.
LOL!
With the rising costs of flying, they’ll want to take over the airlines too. And btw - my natural gas bill and electricity bill have gone up. Are they going to propose having the gov’t take them over also?
Maybe they should get on the horn to Chavez, Khamenei, Putin, Kim Jung-il, etc and get some pointers.
This is the same bunch of clowns who can’t even run a restaurant, get anything done in Congress, or keep their hands out of the till. And we should trust them with this? Gas will cost us $100/gal. within a year.
That thought should scare the crap out of every American.
I call for the recall of the Deomocrats calling for socialization of our oil comapnies.
How about the government does not get jack until they can run their own business responsibly to the tax payers. They can start with Social Security.
For some of them, that would mark an improvement in their behavior.
Am-sky.
Is there a link to these comments?
The Fox link does not show any such comments.
Bingo...
Drill here! Drill now!
Flabbergasted.
A South American cartoon dictator couldn’t have come up with a better solution.
Give the goobers in the gooberment a chance and they will prove that only they can lose money owning a refinery.
Before we do anything rash like nationalizing refineries, or a government-run single payer health care system, lets see how they do with a government run, single-payer legal system first. :-)
If that is all that they did perhaps the grownups in the room could work on the multi-facetted total energy approach to actually solve the problem.
These demokrat clowns are just confirming what we already knew. Their party and Congress are being run by this genius.
If they actually do this, or even continue to suggest it, it may well be time to grab our pitchforks and head to Washington DC. This idea is so dangerous, so destructive, that we should and must be willing to do whatever is necessary to stop it.
In effect, if Obama gets in office, you'll see nationalization of health and energy within the first two years, and the Federal Government essentially directly controlling 51% of the economy. We WILL be a Communist nation at that point, and the takeover will be complete.
The Central Government will be directly responsible for over half our GDP - one of every two dollars spent in this nation - effectively controlling the majority of this land, and you can bet the rules will be quickly gamed to keep the Donks in perpetual party as the Central Party.
Of course, a few FReepers can be smug in their knowledge that they "stuck to their principles" and didn't vote for McCain. Thank you, comrades!
. Lets see how fast the refineries register their headquaters in another country with their functional equipment, leaving the old stuff here. Halliburton moved to Dubai because of the RATs. They have to leave on those great big freighter ships.
I guess American Revolution II is brewing to win our independence from Liberal dictators. Is it time for another Boston Tea Party?????
“They (Republicans) have a one-trick pony approach.”
Yeah, it is called saving this country. Also nationalizing the refineries will not produce another drop of oil. These people are complete morons.
Dear Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY),
Feel free to have the government raise the capital by means other than taxation/fees and use that money to build as many refineries as possible. Buy your oil on the open market, refine it, then sell it at your own stations. You may not subsidize the costs nor ignore laws, environmental or otherwise, that constrain private companies. Also, you may not pass laws that benefit the government unless those laws also benefit private businesses.
You give that a try and let us know how it works out. Compete in a free market and see just how fast private enterprise kicks your lazy bureaucratic asses. Stupid twit.
Also, if your “business” fails, we reserve the right to exile you and anyone involved to whatever socialist nirvana (cuba, n korea, venezuela) will take you.
Is that Woody Allen?
Little secret for you, the Mob in New York is so tough USPS is the express service of necessity there.
Department of Justice controls that situation. Wonder what they get out of it.
Fortunately, they could get help from the efficiency experts in the Post Office.
