The United States is pressing for an Israeli withdrawal from a disputed Golan Heights area located on the border with Lebanon, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told the Arabic language daily Al-Hayyat on Sunday.

According to the report, Rice told Lebanese leaders during her unexpected visit to Beirut that the U.S. would bolster its efforts in the coming weeks toward pushing Israel to pull out from the Shaba Farms.

Israel to US...not only no, but HELL NO!

How absolutely assinine to tell our allies to pull back from high, defensible ground, and ceed that to an aggressor nation.

I hope Israel firmly rejects this foolish notion.

Israel isn't in danger. It's simply going to have to expend more Jewish blood.

I'll be curious as to what he Israeli's are going to get in return.....not much except a verbal promise I suspect.

That's not the only thing in return... Lebanon could provide, in french of course, rien. They could also provide some Nichts. Even a touch of niente. Oh, and lets not forget some μηδέν and τίποτα.

Which if broken, once again, will go unnoticed and unmentioned by those who will demand more of the same nonsense a year, two, or three, from now.

Who the good guys and bad guys are in this game is pretty easy to understand. Israel will honor it's deal, but the rockets will fly anyway. Israel will honor it's deal, and the bus bombs will continue. Israel will bend and bend, but those who are blind as to what the ultimate goals of Iran's Islamic Revolution, Hezbollah, Hamas, etc are., simply WANT to be ignorant out of convenience.

If I were Israeli, I would DREAD the idea of Obama. That will have serious repercussions as to what we'd be willing to do to help Israel; may it be aid, defense sales, intel cooperation, political backing on the international stage.............. I suspect that if Obama were to make it, you can literally write us off as an asset. We'll be useless, as are many our allies today and post 911 for us. I would take serious the threat of an Obama winning in Nov., for it would make many like Iran see an opportunity to make their dream come true.

Well, if Israel wants to give back the Golan, or only Sheeba Farms, that's fine, it's their decision.

But a couple weeks ago the US was sending signals that we were unhappy that Israel was negotiating with Syria. Now we're happy?

Dysfunctional diplomacy at it's best. And yes, administrations change in just over a half year, but till then someone needs to be able to focus on the tasks at hand. And inconsistancy doesn't help. It's no wonder no one in the region seems to care about our opinion.

Ever since Olmert ran for office he has said he thought peace could only happen if the Palestinians had their own country. And he has also for a long time been ready to make concessions. Not that I agree with that, but I think it is unfair to blame this on Condi like she just thought of this on her own. Seems to me she is working with, and in the same direction as Olmert is.

The following is from an article from July 2007:

*******

Olmert said Israel was ready to withdraw from the Golan. “Certainly we will also have to make concessions,” he said at a collective farm in northern Israel.

But Assad’s demand for a guarantee to remove Jewish settlers and troops from the entire territory before talks resumed “creates conditions that set an impossible threshhold for the start of negotiations,” Olmert said.

Israeli leaders have agreed in the past to withdraw from the Golan in exchange for a peace treaty with Syria. But the last negotiations between the sides broke down in 2000 over a dispute about the terms of such an Israeli pullout.

With respect to my earlier post - it seems that while giving up the Golan Heights needs to be part of the deal - when does Israel do it? Not all at once, or allowing an armed agressor to have it.

“I’ll let the girl go if you lower your weapons.”

“No, we’ll lower our weapons after you let go of the girl”.

The Israelis would be fools to give up the Golan Heights and its position of strength and defense, for a worthless scrap of paper from a nation that has been nothing but hell bent to destroy them for decades.

That would be another "Peace in our time" moment. The last one did not work out real well at all.

Israel should tell Amalekstinian Secretary Rice that Israel will give up the Golan when the US returns Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California to Mexico (which may not be too far off unofficially, given the abysmal performance of the Administration and Congress on securing our borders and ignoring the illegal alien invasion).
