Rice blesses Hezbollah power-sharing government
Washington Times ^ | June 16, 2008 | ANNE GEARAN

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Monday she welcomes a new power-sharing arrangement in Lebanon even though it increased the power of Hezbollah militants at the expense of U.S.-backed moderates.

"Obviously in any compromise there are compromises," Rice said during a surprise visit to meet Lebanon's new consensus choice for president. The election of former Army chief Michel Suleiman last month is the clearest sign that Lebanon stepped back from the brink and that the deal with Iranian-backed Hezbollah is taking hold.

Hezbollah's ascendancy is a bitter pill for the U.S., which is worried that Iran's influence is spreading in the Middle East and had spent millions backing the Lebanese government for three years.

Rice's blessing is a sign that the Bush administration has accepted that Western-backed democratic leaders who helped Lebanon throw off three decades of Syrian domination could not govern the country alone. Lebanese politics operate on ambiguity and consensus, and in this case that meant giving veto power to Hezbollah, a militia and political force that the United States lists as a terrorist group.

"This was an agreement that I think served the interests of the Lebanese people," Rice said. "And since it served the interests of the Lebanese people, it served the interests of the United States. We support the democratically elected government of Lebanon."

apparently in condi's world one country's terrorists are another country's legitimate government. rice continues to romanticize the 'poor palestinians' and liken them to blacks struggling for civil rights in the 1960s. pure nonsense.

I thought he always seemed like a sniping time-server. (Not in his Ranger days, presumably.) Being a pro-abort is a bad sign in a man whose profession is to defend the innocent.

What I know is that Miss Rice should definitely go back to the piano.

The permanent staff at State have perfected waterboarding and implement it on all incoming Secretaries, to conform to their will.

I just re-checked Powell's bio, and I have to say you're right. He served in combat in Vietnam with distinction. In the Reagan administration, he helped take down the Marxists in Grenada. He held the line on homosexuals in the military against the Clintonistas. I'd forgotten a lot of that, and underestimated his appalling transition.

After he quit the Army, Powell did sound like a RINO when he registered Republican to go for civilian political office. But he turned into an absolute sissy-snake once he got to State. He seemed to make it his job to get in the way of killing terrorists. The more oblivion envelops this man, the better.

Not only is she a mess, she’s abetting the making of an even bigger mess in the Middle East. Why do we have to give aid and comfort to Hizbollah elements anywhere? Aren’t they a terrorist organization and our enemy?
