I freed millions from barbarism, says President with no regrets

The real 'options on the table' that should worry Europe and the world lay elsewhere - in the likelihood of moves by Iran's Arab neighbours to develop nuclear weapons of their own. He said the 'time is now' for the outside world to put in place 'diplomacy with consequences' to bring Iran's uranium-enrichment activities to an end, not least because he believed that a new group of European leaders had 'gone beyond the Iraq period' and were engaged with the US in multilateral efforts on a range of other issues.

In London, however, Iraq inevitably will be back on the agenda. Today will begin for the President and the First Lady, Laura Bush, when they meet the Queen and Prince Philip at Windsor Castle, and will end with dinner with the Browns. But tomorrow - after breakfast with an international Middle East envoy named Tony Blair - he will have formal Downing Street talks with the Prime Minister and discuss the delicate issue of a 'timetable' for British troop withdrawals from Iraq.

Asked in the Rome interview about popular opposition in Britain to the war and his presidency, he replied: 'Do I care? Only to the extent that it affects people's view of the citizens I represent. Do I care about my personal standing? Not really.'

He remained, he said, convinced that Iraq, and the world, was a better place without Saddam Hussein. And he said that while 'Presidents don't get to do re-dos' on issues such as Saddam's lack of weapons of mass destruction, there was one lesson from the run-up to the Iraq war that he felt was hugely relevant to the standoff in Iran.

The SOB was running people though industrial shredders feet first - he needed to be stopped and GWB stopped him. We may have socked the Tar Baby, but it's a Tar Baby that would have socked us at its leisure regardless of what we did.

Context alert.

That notwithstanding, this man is one of the towering mortals of the 21st century.

People with any sense will be both humbled and honored to be an American by this son of America.

I thank and appreciate President Bush.

Me too. Especially when I contemplate the truly awful alternatives, (Gore & Kerry)

I may disagree with a few of the things he has tried or tried to do, but I do love this president

I love the man.

Do I have some criticisms? You bet. The border, too much spending, etc.

But, as for the war on terror, I have zero complaints. None. He was the right man for the time.

He didn’t meely mouth and throw diplomatic words of protest at the terrorists. He handed them their heads on a platter. The rest of the world took notice. Although the press will never admit it, I’ll bet he is almost considered a god in the Middle East.

He took over Afghanistan (remember how that was supposed to be impossible? The media relentlessly lectured us how in all the centuries since Alexander no one had been able to conquer Afghanistan bla bla bla) in a few weeks and practically exterminated the terrorists who had held that nation hostage for two decades.

Then Iraq. Saddam’s Iraq was by far the most powerful nation in the area. When he rattled his saber, all the other nations trembled. When Bush made noise about taking out Saddam, few in the Middle East thought it possible. Saddam was too powerful, they said.

How long did it take to take Baghdad? The rest of the Middle East nations couldn’t believe their eyes. Iraq was not only taken, but both of Saddam’s evil spawn, who seemed so strong and authoritative a month before, were dead. And Saddam himself was in a cage. You cannot imagine what that did to the Arab psyche. They are surely thinking “Gee whiz, is there anything this bada$$ CAN’T do?”

Oh, and NO, ZERO, NADA terrorist attacks on American shores since 9/11/01. When all the Muslim terrorist cells on the planet would have given everything they had just to kill more Americans in the U.S., Bush and co. kept us safe. That is huge.

Plus, he gave us two superb Supreme Court justices and much needed tax relief.

That doesn’t offset the border problem (which MUST be tackled by the next president before it is too late) or the ridiculous increase in federal spending. But, with Bush I can find much more positive than negative.

I have no doubt—NONE—that Bush will be remembered as a good, maybe even great, president. Might take 30+ years, but I am sure of it.
