POLICE and teachers who told a group of high school students that two dozen of their classmates had been killed in road smashes had to admit it was just a hoax when the teenagers became hysterical with grief.
The fake announcement was part of a road safety campaign meant to scare the students off drink-driving.

Here’s a great lesson for America’s youth- it’s OK to lie to get the response you want.
I have to admit, this story really surprised me. And I had thought that public education no longer had the capacity to do that.
The government schools have really done it this time.
Does the story omit the who, where and when in its presentation of the “facts?” If so, why?
I may be a minority on this one...
That was an unorthodox way of sending the message of ‘dont drink, dont drive”. Brilliant actually.
Didn’t Homer Simpson do this to Ned Flanders? When schools look to The Simpsons for ideas, we are in a world of hurt.
What a dirty trick!
Well, maybe it’s also OK for students to lie to the teachers and police. For example, tell them a school shooting has killed some teachers, then say, “JUST MAKING IT UP!!!!”
I wonder how many of those holding the signs will be partying hard this weekend, forgetting the very lesson they wrote on those signs.
What a bunch of cruel pricks. Seems like a lot of so called educators today are the dregs of civilization. They do this, not because it is effective in stopping DUI’s (there is no evidence of that) but simply for their own sadistic joy at witnessing the pain of others. Exuse me while I vomit.
News from an alternate universe:
“A regional convention of the National Education Association erupted in pandemonium Saturday when police and administrators told the assembled educators that 40 of their colleagues had been killed when a falling meteorite struck their shuttle bus during a group shopping trip that morning.
Teachers wept, screamed, and demanded action from Washington for half an hour before a smirking administrator took the podium to announce that the report was a hoax. According to the administrator, the missing educators were simply hung over after a night on the town.
“Let this be a lesson to you. Your time is yours, but be ready for vital union business by the next day, or else!”
You’re right!
Lying to elicit an obvious emotional response. With all the genuine tragedy going on - they resort to this LOW TACTIC.
Child abuse and professional malpractice. Fire the lot of them.
Where did this happen?

****
The teachers lied because obviously these kids are idiots, wont listen to their teachers and had to try a different approach to send the message.
Stange, but neither what you posted, nor the source story at the link, tell us where this occurred.
Is it Australia?
Absolutely crazy!
It wasn’t a dirty trick. We have a program in the high schools here called “Every 15 Minutes.”
Our son was taken overnight (we knew in advance) and we were “told” he was killed in a DUI accident. Although we knew it was role playing, it was very disturbing. It made it seem very real because he wasn’t home that night. I’ll never forget the impact of hearing that my son had been “killed.”
This is a disgusting thing to do, regardless of the intent. Ideally some of the people responsible for this should be let go.
These officers and school officials are sick.

I expect both deep resentment and awareness will come from this. Anguish aside, the students are now better prepared for college.
Sheesh.
As far as I’m concerned this is child abuse.
The NEA crowd has lost whatever small bits of minds they had left.
OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- School officials in Oceanside, Calif., are defending a scared-straight exercise that sent some El Camino High School students into hysterics.
One Monday last month, California Highway Patrol officers went to 20 classrooms and delivered the grim news that several students had been killed in drunken driving car crashes over the weekend.
The news devastated Michelle de Gracia, who says she was nauseated and too stunned to cry. Others in her physics class were so upset that the teacher had to tell them it was all staged. Then they became angry. De Gracia said, "They got the shock they wanted."
A 15-year-old student said that while she feels "betrayed" by her teachers and school administrators, she also feels that "if it saves one life, it's worth it." Others disagree. During assemblies after the hoax, some students held up posters reading, "Death is real. Don't play with our emotions."
Camino High guidance counselor Lori Tauber said, "We wanted them to be traumatized."
Well, Lori, your husband was just killed in a terrorist attack on a Los Angeles house of ill repute. The video is really graphic and it's all over the media.
During every school year some students die in auto wrecks; this happens even more during graduatioin and the days preceding graduation. i.e. Someone gets a new car and picks up friends to try it out-this happened here a few years ago--a great kid who just went for a ride in a friend's new car was killed--no drinking involved, just bad road and speed. It devastated his parents and grandparents.
Personally, I think an assembly with a list and pictures of those killed in say the last five years would have been very effective, along with some student comments.
This sounds like a very bad H'wood idea--ghoulish and immature.
vaudine
The publik skewlz and Barney Fife. A helluva combination.
The school superintendant and participating teachers in this idiotic hoax need to come up missing for real.
I believe if I was one of the students this would turn me to drink.
If by “brilliant” you mean, blatant emotional abuse bordering on cruelty, ya...it was “brilliant”.
Agreed.
But I still think some of those that were upset about being duped are out drinking and driving this weekend.
After a friend of mine got thrown out of a 3rd story window for a drug deal gone bad, I remember getting plastered after the funeral, toasting him with Tanqueray and Sprite, then driving to a midnight showing of the "Black and Blue" movie.
As much as "Death Is Real" I felt at the funeral, it was quickly replaced by the "Real Teenage Feeling Of Invincibility".
Tell it to the jury.
Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress
*The wrongdoers conduct must be intentional or reckless
*The conduct must be outrageous and intolerable
*There must be a connection between the wrongdoer's conduct and the emotional distress
*The emotional distress must be severe
*To be successful in a lawsuit, the distress must be very extreme or outrageous
Why are they idiots for not listening to liars?
But it was still brilliant, though.

Just suck it up. Welcome to life kiddies.
Suspend them all 1 week no pay. Cops and faculty.
Back in high school in science class we were doing blood preasure, and taking our pulses while resting, walking in place and jogging in place. The teacher had me join him in an extra “experiment”. I pretended to think it was stupid and just sat at my desk with a “I’m too cool for school” attitude. After about the 4th time of him getting on my case he had me step out in the hall.
We started arguing, slamming the lockers like he was pushing me, then he came back in the room and grabbed a pistol out of his closet and stormed out of the room yelling at me in the hall and shot. (A blank obviously).
Then we both walked into the room with smiles on our faces and he asked everyone to check their pulse. (Stress test I guess!?)
Anyway - I’m not sure how he got away with that, but it was many years ago. Not exactly sure how I would feel about one of my kids’ teachers pulling the same stunt today. Would probably have me pretty upset given the times we live in.
Needless to say though he was one of everyone’s favorite teachers, as he was always up to something creative like that.
Haha! Exactly!!
Because, as everyone knows, there's absolutely no link between emotional stress and alcohol.
Is it me, or has everyone in this country gone completely insane.
i thought it was Australia from the source... is it really in the United States? twice i read “drink-driver.” i’ve never heard it called that here... must be foreign...
You've got one thing right, your son was taken...
No this is "unorthodox" and "Brilliant "
"Stan, I'm your future self. I spent a lot of my teenage years on a slow downward spiral experimenting with drugs and alcohol."
Sorry that you never got any love as a child.
They caused them pain.
It is child abuse.
They perpetrators need to be fired and prosecuted.
Got that right!!
As someone who lost 7 High School friends in one accident in 1960 in Vermont (from a small school with only 200 total enrollment) and remembers the traumatic affect it had on all, this is more than cruel and all involved should be fired.
Can't believe how many morons went along with this.
I think the gravity of drinking and driving can be taught without this kind of emotional manipulation.
“We wanted them to be traumatized.”
Fine. You “educators” need a stack of notices on CDC letterhead that your spouses are HIV-positive and you have to come in for testing. Attached, the questionnaire that tries to sort out whether your spouse got it from a hooker or a needle, and how many people you may be infecting with your behavior.
“We wanted them to be traumatized.”
Part Two: The IRS sends you a letter saying you fouled up your return so bad, they really can’t believe it wasn’t deliberate. Enclosed, a little video showing what they are going to do about it. Be very afraid.
LOL! Life imitates Southpark!
and they don't show Blood on the Highway anymore becasuse???
