Outlook
We cannot find anyone in Democratic ranks who honestly feels there is any chance that Sen. Hillary Clinton will become Sen. Barack Obamas running mate. There are Democrats who feel for that reason that it would be a good idea if Obama makes a choice for Vice President as quickly as possible to get the unhappy reaction from Clintons female voters over as quickly as possible.
The eight-point bump in the polls for Obama after clinching the nomination is just about what would be expected and is unlikely to be permanent. A much more serious problem for McCain is the extraordinary lack of enthusiasm for him in Republican ranks even though he is the partys best bet in a down year for the GOP. It is clear now that, during the four months since McCain clinched the Republican nomination, he has failed to consolidate his base.
The response from McCain insiders is that the campaign depicting Obama as a leftist, in his past and now, will bring around the Republican troops. That may well solidify conservative support for McCain, but a negative campaign by itself always has difficulty in building genuine enthusiasm.

Senate
Overview: This will be a bad year for Republicans in Senate races. Democrats are guaranteed significant gains, and the only question is how big. The best foreseeable outcome for the GOP is a loss of three seats. Democrats dreams of reaching a filibuster-proof 60 seats are probably unattainable.
The most striking feature of this years Senate contests: Republicans dont have a single good pick-up opportunity, which means our predicted gain of four seats for the Democrats is almost the baseline. Democratic gains of up to seven seats would not be surprising.

Something, finally, that really is George Bush’s fault.
You don't suppose this is true because he's on the wrong side of a number of issues that many GOP members believe strongly in, do you? It couldn't be because he's "leaned across the isle" with Teddy, Babs, and Nancy far too many times and got nothing in return, do you?
McCain needs to start supporting those values that the core of the GOP membership supports and, until that happens, he hasn't got a chance.
All right which of you FReepers are sitting on your butts and allowing Democrat Senators and Congressmen into the Houses of Congress?
I want name, rank and serial number... NOW!!!
This is’bullsh%t man. Texas can’t hold down the fort forever!
Congresman John Culberson (R-TX)
Senator John Cornyn (R-TX)
Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX)
McCain is doing nothing to help the situation when he keeps insisting on kissing the ring of La Raza and bowing to the altar of gorebal warming.
If he was smart, he could run against the "damnable do nothing congress" as Harry Truman did in 1948. As a sitting senator, he could even push legislation such as sensible energy exploration which could bring down gas prices, but he's more concerned with courting the enviro-nazi vote which is going to Obama anyway.
I'm beginning to think he really doesn't want to be president. He only wanted to make sure nobody to his right had a chance at getting elected.
Three cheers for Texas! As for my state ... um ... I'm trapped behind enemy lines.
-Camille Paglia
Which state?
Me too. The People's Republic of Illinois, to be exact.
Drill.....self-deport.......net gain.....
I’m trapped in Tennessee, with a communist (Cohen) in the House seat, a RINO up for reelection to the Senate that I dare not vote against, and a Republican presidential candidate that seems to have less support than Dole did in this state.
Well, she ain’t wrong.
I hope that every Freeper here will get out and vote for conservative state and local candidates, and will consider sending money to good candidates in other states.
It is clearly vital at the least to try to prevent the Democrats from getting large enough majorities so they can close off debate any time they feel like it.
Whether or not Freepers can, in good conscience, vote for McCain, they should at least give their money and their votes to the conservative cause. (And save enough money to put the next Freepathon over the top a little faster.)
BUT. The fact is that historically we know that the guy at the head of the ticket always influences the vote on the other lines. If he is popular, a lot of voters will turn out. If he is not, they won’t.
No need to urge conservative activists here in the forum to vote. We will. The problem is the tens of millions of ordinary people who will probably just stay home, because McCain is the lousiest, least inspiring candidate the Republicans have nominated in at least a hundred years.
Ten million extra voters turned out for the party in 2004. These sometime voters stayed home in 2006, and probably even more will stay home in 2008.
Sorry, it’s not our fault, it’s not the average Republican voter’s fault even, it’s the RNC’s fault, it’s the Republican leadership’s fault, it’s McCain’s fault.
As this article admits, HE IS AT BEST AN UNINSPIRING LOSER. (And at worst a crazy, left-wing, egotistical maniac.)
And the left-wing press hasn’t even gotten started on their campaign of destroying him. If they could kill Dan Quayle, who was both handsome and appealing, for carelessly misspelling potatoe, just think what they can do to McCain.
“The most striking feature of this years Senate contests: Republicans dont have a single good pick-up opportunity”
Wrong. Louisiana.
“Three cheers for Texas! As for my state ... um ... I’m trapped behind enemy lines. “
Great, you can engage the enemy at close range!!
Keep fighting!
“At this point I’d accept a 5 seat loss in the senate. just keep 40 plus republicans, enough to filibuster the marxist agenda of Obama.”
No need to accept it yet, we need to get these good conservatives elected! Pearce, Sununu, Shaffer, Gilmore, etc.
We need to win in Minn., SD, and LA as well.
McCain got a plurality of the GOP voters who turned out in the primaries.
How would we feel if Fred Thompson was the one who got the plurality and all the McCain supporters were saying they would stay home because Fred was too conservative?
we NEED to save this seat:
Virginia-11: Fairfax Co. Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerry Connolly (D) thrashed former Rep. Leslie Byrne (D) by 25 points to earn the Democratic nomination in the Northern Virginia district of retiring Rep. Tom Davis (R). Connolly faces conservative businessman Keith Fimian (R) in the fall. Leaning Democratic Takeover.
If Stevens is the nominee it looks like he's really vulnerable then Begich won't have to worry about money. The national party will sink every dollar they can into helping him.
Polls here suggest former Rep. Jim Slattery (D) could give Sen. Pat Roberts (R) a run for his money. If Roberts runs a smart race, hell win, but a misstep of "macaca" proportions could put this one in play.
Slattery is a local joke. I cannot forsee any way that the Democrats can pick this up, absent Roberts holding up a liquor store or something. Even then it'd be close.
Another recruitment failure looks likely to give Sen. Mary Landrieu (D) a third term.
This is a disappointment. Best chance the GOP has to pick up a seat and they blow it.
Sen. Tim Johnson (D) looks likely to continue on as the most unlikely senator.
Second best chance to pick up a seat. GOP blew this one, too.
I am trapped in my left coast state... I have DiFi and Barbie, I have voted for neither I must say.. and Barbie is up for election next election cycle, perhaps she will get the boot.. but lots of loonies in the San Fran Bay area..
That's a procedural tactic that I have absolutely no doubt the Democrats will change the moment the GOP tries it. All it'll take to change it is a simple majority.
Be an optimist; I am. At best, and with a lot of work, McCain could be an uninspiring winner.
If the DEMOCRAT Senators REFUSE to DRILL and REFINE, WHY WOULD PEOPLE VOTE FOR THEM????? I thought people voted with their POCKETBOOKS!! The DEMOCRATS are STEALING OUR MONEY by not letting us DRILL OUR OWN DAMN OIL!
KS has had an official Democrat senator since the mid-1930s, I believe, but tens of thousands are hoping Oprah’s Obama can change that. KS is full of moderates, many of whom are really strong liberals looking for a secular “messiah” like Obama.
I think Ted Stevens will lose, as AK people are not quite as tolerant of senatorial foolishness are those in WV and so many other states.
People in SD won’t vote out a “sick person”. The late Karl Mundt stayed in office ill for a time, but he didn’t run for reelection while so seriously ill.
Whoever it is, it won't be Roberts that they take the seat from. However, when Brownback steps down in 2010 then I can see them make a run at his seat with either Sebelius or Moore.
I honestly believe they could have taken him on based on record alone and not even touched the health issue. But we'll never know now.
Does this count losing lil mary’s seat or ash hole franken beating Coleman? If not, it means nothing!
They also have a shot at New Jersey.
I meant to say KS has NOT had an official Democrat senator since the mid-1930s. I didn’t know Brownback is bailing out in 2010.
He term limited himself, and I've seen nothing that makes me believe he'll change his mind. In fact I expect he'll try for Kansas governor in 2010. He really wants to be president and since his try from the Senate tanked I think he's expecting that a term or two as governor might improve his chances.
I've been saying for months that every Republican running for the Senate or the House this year, whether as an incumbent or a challenger, needs to run against the "do nothing, good for nothing" Democrat led Congress.
In the two years since the Democrats took over Congress they have accomplished nothing. Even the Democrat base is pissed off. All the Democrats have to show for 2 years of control is that gasoline prices have doubled.
