Democrats Fear the Liberal Curse
timesonline.co.uk ^ | June 8, 2008 | Sarah Baxter

Is Barack Obama the next George McGovern? The question has been posed apprehensively by Democrats and gleefully by Republicans. McGovern, the antiVietnam war candidate, ran for president against Richard Nixon in 1972 and lost 49 states out of 50, a landslide defeat that still haunts his party.

“Obama is the fullest flowering of liberal orthodoxy since George McGovern,” conservative columnist Rich Lowry wrote last week. Harold Ickes, a Hillary Clinton adviser, dropped thinly veiled comparisons between Obama and McGovern while trying to keep his candidate’s campaign alive.

So is it true? The former candidate, 85, can speak for himself. It is no insult to be described as a “George McGovern liberal”, he said. “They’re the best kind.”

But he added: “I don’t think Obama is all that radical. I find him a pretty moderate liberal. From the very beginning, he’s been going after Republican and independent voters and that’s what we need to do.”

McGovern, a decorated second world war pilot, was defined by opponents as the candidate of “amnesty, abortion and acid”. Republicans are looking for a similarly pithy formula to define Obama as an antipatriotic appeaser. The controversy over Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s former pastor, was heaven-sent in that regard.

McGovern compares Obama to Abraham Lincoln, the president who abolished slavery. “But Lincoln seldom went to church even though he was always quoting the Almighty. Perhaps he didn’t want to be blamed for the words of his pastor,” McGovern noted wryly.

He’s the Manchurian marxist candidate. How long can he keep up the empty suit platitudes before people start asking questions.

We know the media won’t.

Is Barack Obama the next George McGovern?”

Obama is far more liberal than McGovern ever was.
There has never been a presidential candidate who was anywhere near as hard line left wing as Obama is.
The guy is just plain scary.
Of course McGovern will do lie through his teeth and deny it in at attempt to fool the public and get Obama elected. But facts are facts.

I know the polls show a tight race now. But I have a feeling that Obama can only go downhill as the general election campaign gets going. It may not be a McGovern style landslide, but McCain has a chance for a solid victory.

McGovern compares Obama favorably with Lincoln. No, not George Lincoln Rockwell, the American Nazi, or Lincoln Hayes, the character played by Clarence Williams on the old Mod Squad series. ABRAHAM Lincoln, generally regarded as one of the greatest U.S. presidents in history.

Which just shows what a complete nutcake McGovern is.

You can't compare Obama to McGovern. McGovern had only the college kids and old communists in his corner. Obama has those, plus the media, academia, Hollywood, Baby Boomers, and of course 95% of all black voters. Blacks constitute 12% of the population, and you can bet that 75% of eligible black voters will actually go and vote.

Then there's the fact that most conservatives despise McCain. And then there's Bob Barr...

The scenario is nothing like 1972.

“Blacks constitute 12% of the population, and you can bet that 75% of eligible black voters will actually go and vote.”

And in places like, Chicago, New Orleans, Detroit, etc, that 75% will equate to 110% of the vote!

Everything democrats say is a lie. Everything democrats do is fraud. I said that.

IMHO, it's about time that Americans stopped calling everyone to the left of centre “liberal”. It isn't even necessary to call them Marxists, or Communist (although many are) — socialist will do for most people on the far left of the political spectrum in north America.

BTW, time was that “liberals” stood for free markets and individual liberties.

Perhaps Barry will lose 56 out of the 57 states that he campaigned in. Perhaps up is down and down is side-ways. Under the right circumstances you may even be able to smell colors. It must be nice being a liberal democrat; all things are possible.

During McGovern’s time, this country was vastly different. The school system produced much more Conservative values among the young people, which today and the last 25 years is a polar opposite. There were also at least 75% of the country that were Social Conservatives even though they voted Democrat.

The Demographics today are incomparable. These gas and food prices today have left people with the idea that only a Democrat can stop it. Sadly incorrect, but the media has them convinced. Republicans are nuclear waste. Deadly to the environment, the economy and little children. (The war in Iraq)

McAmnesty (Cap and No-Trade and raise your gas taxes $.50) is DOA in November. The media will see to that.

Liberalism is not a curse, it is an ideology. It happens to have a minority of the US population supporting it. Liberals fail to get elected, not because they are cursed, they fail to get elected because few people support them.

How could he recover after Obama and his Democrat Senate and House pass the new Fairness doctrine that once again will make talk radio illegal. Just as it was from 1943 until 1988. Except this time they are going to make internetsites like FR illegal.

You might send JiimRob a card while he is in prison... But how would you know he was in prison.. the MSM would never tell you. He could hope to get the cell right next to Rush.

Fools on the right are like fools on the Left. The left voted for Nader in 2,000 because they couldn't see any difference between (Earth in the balance) Gore and George Bush. They went for Nader instead. If one in 6 Nader voters in Florida had voted for Gore he would have been president.

You are the same as the Naderites. You can't see any difference between Obama and McCain.

When the Obama justice department charges you with hate posting, take your lawyer's advice ... plead guilty and beg for mercy. You won't get it but your lawyer will enjoy watching you beg.

Oh something can be done about it ... unfortunately it would require a GREAT deal of sacrifice courage and determination. I don't believe that the populous as it presently is has the anywhere near what it would take to set things right. ... IMO we need to reset and start over ... However, it may yet be forced on those who wish to remain free.

IMO the future for our republic is bleak
