50 Cent's mansion goes up in smoke

A "suspicious" fire has burned down a multimillion-dollar home owned by rapper 50 Cent. Arson squad investigators were on the scene of the blaze which injured six people.
A lawyer for the Grammy-nominated rapper's former girlfriend, Shaniqua Tompkins, said the woman lived in the Long Island house with two of her children.
A fire service spokesman said all six people were taken to hospital where they are in a stable condition after suffering smoke inhalation.
Earlier this year, Tompkins filed a lawsuit against 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, claiming he had promised her the £1.2 million house more than a decade ago.

I remember first hearing the name on SNL’s Weekend Update with Kevin Nealon, back in the early 1990’s. Ellen Cleghorne was Queen Shaniqua. It was funny, but I thought the name was made up myself.

If the accusations are true, then 50 is quite stupid. Besides the money from his rap career, he made around $400 million when Glacéau was bought by Coca-Cola (he was the celebrity spokesperson when Glacéau was a brand new company and took a huge chunk of stock in lieu of cash as payment). To risk a serious arson charge for any reason is stupid enough, but even more so if amounts to what is peanuts (to someone very rich) out of spite. Of course, no one was ever made the argument that 50 was ever a particularly bright man in the first place...

He was a criminal first. His fame came not because of his music, but the fact he was shot 9 times (all at once, not 9 separate instances). The fact he was decent by rap standards and tied to Eminem just guaranteed success.
He built a thug image unlike anyone since Tupac (who actually was a pretty decent poet and actor, despite releasing mostly BS thug songs).

I have a job in staffing, so I get exposed to a LOT of odd names. Shaniqua is normal anymore. Even “normal” names have to have stupid spellings.
