It was back to 'business as usual' for the Chinese government on Saturday when it condemned Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown and members of the British Parliament for meeting with the Dalai Lama. A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry in Beijing was quoted as saying that the meeting in Britain "interferes in China's internal affairs and hurts the Chinese people's feelings as well." Britain is just one country in a list of countries that China has criticized for meeting with the Dalai Lama.

It's a shame that Beijing thinks they can dicate with whom foreign leaders can and cannot meet.

"...interferes in China's internal affairs and hurts the Chinese people's feelings as well."

Feelings? Are people allowed to have feelings in China? It almost sounds spiritual. Can't have that...they might start an organization.

It was interesting I watched most of yesterday afternoon BBC News station on cable (basically because they were covering he decommissioning of a RAF base and the New York crane disaster). One of the articles was interviewing Chinese people who had survived the earthquake and now had fled to higher ground to get away from the flood water. Many were saying things like one has to have faith and it is in God's hands and also you could see the deep caring for each other and their own family members. It was a stark contrast with the Chinese of a few years ago - things are definitely on the move in that country proving that capitalism which many are benefiting from it also producing a change of attitude. I think it may well have to do with more and more Chinese are now travelling for pleasure and getting a passport is no longer as difficult as it used to be.
