This message is for that oppressed, neglected, passed over, bitter, gun-toting group of people otherwise known as working-class white males: You really don't matter.
To all the hand-wringing over Sen. Barack Obama's alleged problem with winning over the votes of those white men, let's counter with some other facts.
Obama has a lot of company. John Kerry. Al Gore. Bill Clinton. Michael Dukakis. Walter Mondale. Jimmy Carter. Just to name the six most recent Democratic nominees who lost the white, working-class, male vote.
In a matchup with Sen. John McCain, Sen. Hillary Clinton does no better than Obama among these voters, even though her candidacy is now portrayed as the second coming of Norma Rae.
The non-partisan Pew Research Center's latest survey shows that Obama and Clinton both would get 45 percent of the overall white vote in a matchup against McCain. Obama's appeal to white-collar men compensates for his shortcomings among blue-collar men, loosely defined as voters with only a high school education.
George W. Bush won 58 percent of the votes of all whites in 2004 and he won 54 percent of the votes of all whites in 2000. Among white males, you have to go back to 1964 to find a Democrat who won a majority, and that was Lyndon Johnson. Bill Clinton came close, winning a plurality in his 1996 rout of Republican Bob Dole.
There are a number of theories on why working-class white males have so abandoned the party they had joined with such vigor during the New Deal. The cultural identity of the Democratic Party changed, with a focus on civil rights, gender equality and opposition to the Vietnam War. Other programs of the Great Society helped to build a sturdy allegiance among minorities, while at the same time engendering resentment among many...

Indeed! I'm seeing more and more of this discussion about the white, working-class, Christian male as some media pariah. It seems that this has been on the minds of the MSM for some time, but the thought, nay the exasperating glimmer of hope (/sarcasmOff) of an Obama presidency is bringing to the fore the possibility that, Hey... white men don't matter any more!
In many Caribbean nations and most parts of Africa, being black is a societal mark. The blacker you are, the less likely you are to ascend to any worthy post in society. Only the fairest skinned among the blacks make it in their society.
A young African man in one of my college English courses, bright as a whip, would constantly extoll the virtues of America and how wonderful it is to be here and to be educated. He was Nigerian and his skin was so black it looked blue (blue black, as he called it). He told me stories of how he was essentially made to transport heavy items in his village or otherwise be a mule. He wasn't considered important by anyone.
The point to my story here is that as we become more integrated as a society, and you only have to go to your local grocery to see more than a few handfuls of interracial couples, families and products of those unions to see it's happening, we are going to find the demonization of white people as more and more necessary to society at large. This will come about as a backlash response from the generations who don't want to be relegated to a racial caste system due to the fact that mommy (or daddy) decided to be multicultural in their mating decisions. They'll want this "equality" which they won't, in their minds, be able to achieve due to the fact that "whitey" is still out there "holding [them] down."
Make no mistake. White, Christian, working-class (and even white-collar) men are going to find it very difficult to live comfortably in this world in the next 50 years. I am a stalwart supporter of racial and gender transparency, but I don't think the militant race baiters and feminists see it quite the same way. They don't want to be equal, gentlemen... they want to be BETTER!

God forbid white people make it known they are proud of their race. That would be racist! No Miss White America pageant either. No White Entertainment Network. No Congressional White Caucus. No United Caucasian College Fund. No Nat’l Assoc for the Advancement of White People either.
Folks of acheivement don't need "racial pride" to validate their existence. This is why even when you look at white "ethnic pride" events, they are usually dominated by schlepp class whites, not the cream of the crop.
My daughter lives in Philadelphia and she said most people she talks to there will vote for Hussein Obama just because he’s black. She asks them about the issues and they are clueless.

The US is in an interesting position, as wealth shifts from the West to the East. The US will only benefit from this shift (provided we adopt a Realist foreign policy, instead of the "everyone must practice liberal democracy" BS pushed by everyone from Wilson to Bush II), although the cultural ramifications are yet to be determined.
The point is that the US is a fluid society that has adapted to social change very easily, especially compared to other developing/developed societies in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. People of intelligence will do fine in the emerging society. The folks who are going to fall behind are the less educated native born (especially in the rust belt/rural areas) and the descendants of the black and brown poor in the cities. Racial divisions, and the lack of organizational skills, however, will limit any "governing coalition" to form that could impose their will on the producers/creative/entrepreneurial elite. I think that the political elites will throw out crumbs as they always have (via government jobs) to handle this.
Which is why Obama would be nuts to put her on the ticket.
