Made in China...wine that may soon rival the best of Bordeaux

BORDEAUX, Burgundy… Xinjiang. The world's wine map may have to be significantly re-drawn with figures showing more than a glass is being raised to China. Such is the pace of wine consumption in China that last year the country produced more than 700 million bottles with new statistics showing that production will outstrip Australia's by 2009.

Supermarket chain Morrisons has already added two wines ADVERTISEMENT from the north-west of China to its portfolio, while London fine wine merchants Berry Brothers & Rudd (BBR) has predicted that, by 2058, China will have all the essential ingredients to make fine wine to rival the best of Bordeaux. Jasper Morris, senior buyer for BBR, says he expects China's current 400 wineries to grow by more than tenfold with up to a quarter producing fine quality wine.

"I absolutely think China will be a fine wine player rivalling the best wines from France. It is entirely conceivable that, in such a vast country, there will be pockets of land with a terroir and micro-climate well suited to the production of top quality wines."

Wine consumption is rocketing in China. More than a 100 wineries have opened since 1996, swelling the number of vineyards to more than 500.

But won’t the Chinese wine contain lead?

If my nose and tase buds cannot tell the difference, I’ve been throwing away a lot of money when I could have been drinking cat piss and formaldehyde a lot cheaper.

Six months ago I didn't have a problem buying Chinese made products. But with all the news lately about tainted products & food, I wouldn't even buy a toaster oven made in China (fortunately, there are many good used appliances in thrift stores that were made in America!). I recently noticed that my favorite "Filletes de Salmon" from Walmart are a Chinese product, so I won't be buying those anymore, either. :-(

I think the Chinese economy is going to take a big hit after the Olympics are over. More & more people are going to refuse to buy anything made in China, if for no other reason than the safety of their own health

Unless “someone” runs all other wineries out of business, I don’t foresee China wine going anywhere but down the tubes.

You would have to be nuts or suicidal to buy anything from China anyway.

The Chicoms could argue that their wine is pure and what you're experiencing is that true Chicom flavor...sort of like durian, which I actually like, or baloot, which I haven't had a chance to try.

Well, sure, and probably a little dog.

Will they poison us with their additives.

I will never buy a wine 'made in China' no matter how good tasting it is supposed to be or how much cheaper.

My coworkers husband did an ad for Great Wall, the #1 wine in China. When I asked him what he thought of it, he said “swill”.

cannot understand, if your coworkers husband dislikes Great Wall wine so much, then why did he do ad for the wine in the first place?

he didn’t feel guilty for doing ad for a product he dislikes? or he really needs the money to earn a living?

Lead is only one of many “heavy metals” one would expect in Chinese wine.

i was wondering if wine from France, California... contains lead too
i just cannot believe in any labels of wines which are all suspicious to me

It seems the best solution is to make wine by ourselves for safety reason, just like baking cakes by ourselfs. those cakes sold in market contain too much sugar and preservatives

Just a follow up fyi, I own a retail store. In the summer we carry a wider selection of children’s items and toys. This year about half of the items we wanted to order online and in catalogs were not available because they were all recalled. Take one guess why. Yep, Made in China with LEAD BASED PAINT!

Thank you, Ban. And may I do a little more work this evening.

(BTW, have you tried Rosenblum Vinyards' zinfandel reserve???)
