DES MOINES, Iowa - Barack Obama shied away from triumphantly proclaiming total victory over Hillary Rodham Clinton last night, but he certainly annihilated the central reason she gives for staying in the race.
The Clinton team claims that Sen. Obama is nothing more than a black candidate with a sidecar of liberal academics.
This is why, the Clintons argue, white Democrats in working-class and rural states simply can't pull the lever for this black guy with a foreign-sounding name.
And, the Clinton's implied reasoning goes, since she appeals so much to these racist white Democrats that are the "backbone" of the party, she would make a much better nominee against Republican Sen. John McCain.
So what about the claim that because of opposition from working-class white Democrats, Obama can't win in November?
It is hard to imagine that the hostility of these white voters would be quite so stark had Sen. Clinton not spent the past four months campaigning on precisely this schism.

No mention of all the primaries in which Hillary’s claim has proved correct.
let’s have an Iowa do-over, this time with the voters knowledge of ayers, wright, not covering his heart, flag pin, muslim background (regardless what he calls himself now) etc..etc..
betcha he doesn’t do as well..
Of course Iowa voted BW. Before Wright.
Sorry. A state that repeatedly elects Tom Harkin and Chuck Grassley to the U.S. Senate is NOT a reliable bellwether for how ordinary, bitter, religion-clinging, gun-loving, hard-working whites will vote.
We know a little more about Barry now. He’s had a chance to tell us what his plans are. Things have changed since Iowa.
Barry will probably have trouble in Iowa in the election.
A. The election was before anyone knew Obama
B. Iowa is the most ridiculous state to vote first
Oregon is the only state Obama has won with a wide margin since Hillary's surrogates planted those stories in the MSM.
I thought Hussein put his flag pin on upside down.
I’m sick of all this white/black crap. I’ll vote for a person with absolutely no interest in any white/black/man/woman crap. Enough! We are going to be called racist if Obama loses, and sexist is Clinton loses.
I’m fed up with it! I would have voted for Alan Keyes in a heartbeat.
IMO it’s a mistake to assume that the IA caucus results are representative of how white voters feel about Bambi. The IA caucuses are public; everyone in the room knows how you vote. People have been known to behave differently in the privacy of a voting booth vs. when their vote is known to others. The Bradley effect is a good example of this.
Hold a primary in Iowa and see if Obama wins. I agree.
There, fixed it
you gave him the wrong flag..you need to photoshop the flag with 57 states..
20,000 votes in Iowa. Barack CAN get SOME whites to vote for him, especially the really liberal ones. He’s got the anti-war, radical vote, and the liberal white guilt vote.
His problem is with the working class middle-american democrat white vote. He does well where they aren’t a big factor, like Oregon, and where the Dems use a caucus, since they can overcome the opposition with the more-involved and often under-employed liberal whites.
I hope the party leaders buy Charles Hurt’s screed so Charles Hurt can learn the truth come Nov.
Iowa was a caucus state, not a primary state. Hillary’s supporters were less able to take the time than the collection of students and other academics who make up Obama’s base.
And, as I recall, was at a time when the consensus that Hillary! could not win the general. Voters flocked to the alternative, an unvetted B-HO.
Iowa and New Hampshire and Michigan and Floriduh also show that Democrats will back McCain. < /sarcasm >
(Big Ag isn't just ADM, VeraSun and ConAgra. There are "family farms" which are the American equivalent of an East Prussian fiefdom.)
Expecting common sense from the 'rats in this dump is as delusional as expecting effort from a 'pub.
Mr. niteowl77
Um....an enemy-sounding name. A John Hitler Smith wouldn't have done so well against Eisenhower in 1952, either. ;)
Sing it, Bro!
In my 40 years of voting, spread over three states, I have voted for white, black, Asian, and Hispanic candidates of both genders.
Never voted for a Native American that I can remember, but don't ever remember having one on any of my ballots, either.
I'll hold my nose, and vote for McCain, but not because we are both angry old white men, with skin cancer scars!
He probably does, but in the privacy of the Obama mansion. Something tells me Michelle wouldn't beef about it.
Like everything else, that was not - repeat, not - B. Hussein's fault. Those darn staffers feeding him bogus info. . . .
Actually, the Republican candidate against Herseth in SD in 2006 was Native American.
Iowa was a caucus. At night in mid-January in Iowa. It doesn’t prove much except about the politically obsessed who participate. Obama has completely overperformed in caucus states, and underperfomed in primaries.
Right, I forgot about the timing.
Thanks
Did you guys hear RUSH LIMBAUGH today. He was really propping up HILLARY. Rush was telling a caller that if youve acquired a lot of common sense in your life and youre certainly smart and that is precisely the vote that Mrs. Clinton gets and owns and there are a lot of people like that.
Sounds to me like RUSH might have some fond feelings for the Hildabeast. Im starting to think that Rush dreams of life with the Hildabeast. After the election, Hillary dumps Bill and goes with Rush.
Thats right, you heard it here first. Im the first to see it developing and I am taking credit for when it happens.
This is the future of America, not a soap opera.
E-mail your opinion to Oprah.
Im fed up with it! I would have voted for Alan Keyes in a heartbeat.
How do I get set up for Alan Keyes pings?
