In a move certain to generate both controversy and publicity, a new and used car dealer in Butler, Missouri is offering his customers a choice between two sales incentives with their vehicle purchase: $250 in gasoline or a free semi-automatic handgun.
"We got high gas prices, theft, carjackings, innocent people getting hurt," Walter Moore, from Max Motors, told KMBC-TV. It seems the resourceful dealer is offering car buyers a solution for it all -- and the gun is proving to be the popular choice with 80 percent of his customers choosing the firearm over free fuel. As expected, not everyone is happy. Considering most of his customers already own guns, Moore doesn't understand why people's feathers are getting all ruffled. Customers who choose the semi-auto pistol over the gas are handed a certificate that must be redeemed, after the requisite forms and background check are complete, at a local gun shop. This, of course, keeps the local police much happier.
Tough.
Kudos to Max Motoros, for sticking a finger in the eye of bed-wetting gun-grabbers.
Duh, of course you take the gun. You can get all the gas you want with that.
I suppose with a gun you can get all the gas you want...
Can you trade up to a bigger caliber?
:)
bump to read tomorrow.
Thanks for posting....
"An armed society is a polite society."
Gas is gone in no time, but a gun is your friend for life.
And for getting himself a ton of free publicity.
Merchants nationwide should follow his lead.
Seems like there was a Savings and Loan Company or Bank that offered a new Browning shotgun for a CD some years ago...
Bigger caliber, yeah! Who is the FReeper whose tagline used to read, "Bigger holes are (almost) always better"?
As expected, not everyone is happy.
Can;t please everyone. ;)
Gas is always down at the gas station. A gun is a gift that keeps on giving.
Of course you should take the gun.
There was a bank where I used to live that gave away nice rifles with new accounts. I thought it was a good idea.
Who needs a second toaster?
Hmmm. I wonder if he could vary the type of gun for the vehicle, as a fun gimmick. The salesmen could even throw in a free pitch for a model and make that “goes” with a particular vehicle design.
“Of course you can get any gun you like, but for a performance car like this one, the Glock 23 has the stylish efficiency to complement your driving experience.”
I remember that. They didn't exactly "give" them away, though - you had to keep a certain sum of money on deposit there for something like ten years - and you got the rifle in lieu of interest on the deposit. Nowadays, I'd call it a good financial move. Never really cared for the highly-polished Weatherby bolt-actions that they offered, though.
I thought it was a great idea and still do. I don't recall the rifle brand, but remember thinking it was quite the deal at the time.
I haven't seen it, but my understanding is that there is a scene in Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine that features a segment on a bank having a gun promotion. I'm not sure what his point is (haven't seen it, no plans to see it).
In doing a quick search, Reason doesn't seem to see any point in it, either: http://www.reason.com/news/show/32347.html
