BOLINGBROOK, Illinois (AP) -- Months after naming a former suburban Illinois police sergeant as a suspect in his wife's disappearance, authorities issued a warrant Wednesday for his arrest on an unrelated weapons charge, officials said.
Drew Peterson turned himself in shortly after the warrant was issued.
The gun was one of 11 seized during a search of Peterson's home after Stacy Peterson disappeared in October, said his attorney, Joel Brodsky. He said police claim the rifle barrel was too short under Illinois law.

".. (7) Sells, manufactures, purchases, possesses or carries:
(ii) any rifle having one or more barrels less than 16 inches in length or a shotgun having one or more barrels less than 18 inches in length or any weapon made from a rifle or shotgun, whether by alteration, modification, or otherwise, if such a weapon as modified has an overall length of less than 26 inches; or"
This looks like the Federal length law.
A sawed off rifle? That just seems silly.................
Why does the State care how long a rifle barrel happens to be?
They are claiming the law doesn’t apply because it was a police weapon and he was a police officer when the weapons were seized.
It's actually a federal law regulating short barrelled rifles.
Pretty much any rifle can have a supershort barrel. Ever see those really short AR pistols? Put a stock on one and it becomes a short barrelled rifle subject to ATF tax.
Idk. looked like an AR shorty (I got a glimpse of a snapshot on fox, don’t know if it was the rifle in question)
Should have turned it in when no longer police officer.
IIRC, the bottom limit for (rifle) barrel length under federal law is 16". From the article it sounds like Illinois has an even stricter limit of 18".
Well there’s your motive, Stacy made fun of his sawed off gun.
How short was is barrel? 1/32”?
oops post #9 was meant for you.
Only saw a blurb on fox for a second..looked like one of the CAR-15 family. idk
A sawed off rifle? That just seems silly.................
Say what?
Thanks!
...knowingly possessed a rifle, namely a Colt model Sporter Lightweight, 223 Remington rifle, Serial #SL025365 with attached EOTech electronic sight, with a barrel less than 16 inches in length in violation of state law, according to a release from the Will County State’s Attorney’s office...
I believe his weapons were first taken by police after wife #? (3 or 4) vanished. Only recently were they returned to him by court order...along with autos, computers, etc.
You can have a snub nosed revolver but a rifle barrel greater than 16”. That’s about the dumbest law since fornication.
They were taken after #4 disappeared.
Illinois allows its police, but not citizens to own prohibited guns.
They is a hearing before judge tomorrow on whether they will be released to his son, Oak Brook cop IIRC, or not.
What’s too short under IL law? 21 inches?
It does sound silly. Especially when you consider that you can get a pistol like the Thompson Contender chambered in rifle rounds or a 45 revolver that shoots 410 shotgun shells.
Ruby Ridge rules in effect?
There’s plenty you can hide in your pants these days considering the type of trousers (baggy and down at the crotch) kids are wearing. Maybe higher velocity rifles are more of a worry than pistols to the geniuses in the state bureaucracy although judging by crime stats, it’s the other way around.
“This is my rifle, this is my gun...”
Give me a girl/just like the girl/that married dear old Drew
I have lots of Contender and Encore barrels, pistol stocks and rifle stocks. As the owner of those items, I'm responsible for only assembling them in configurations legal under federal law. If the pistol stock is installed on the frame, the only barrels I can use are the 10", 12", 14" and 15" pistol length barrels. If the rifle stock is installed, the barrel choices are 20", 24", 26" and 28". It's really not that hard to do it right. If you really wanted to intentionally build an SBR configuration, you would have to do the paperwork and get the T/C frame custom engraved per federal spec for use as an SBR. I had considered that for the 15" 460 S&W Encore barrel. In the end, I purchased the 20" Katahdin 460 S&W barrel. It was cheaper and didn't require any special paperwork or engraving.
Another important consideration with the T/C Encore or Contender...always purchase the pistol configuration. The serial number is registered with ATF as rifle or pistol at the time of manufacture. If you buy one registered as a rifle at the factory, you have to do the paperwork to get it registered as a pistol before you can assemble it with pistol stocks and barrels. Failure to do so places you in violation of federal law.
The State Police have confiscated it and it is STILL in their possesion!!!! So some genius decides that since Petersen is no longer a police officer and it is his property after all, lets just CHARGE HIM CRIMINALLY for the hell of it!!!
