Bay to Breakers porta-party very, very wet
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | May 21, 2008 | Phillip Matier, Andrew Ross

It's often called the world's longest party, but this year's Bay to Breakers race through San Francisco was anything but fun for the residents, cops and public workers who bore the brunt of the drunken young "runners" who staggered around Golden Gate Park and the city's west side, relieving themselves wherever it proved convenient.

"We tried to get out in front of the problem, but this year some of these kids were just beyond gone," said city Recreation and Park Department spokeswoman Rose Dennis.

"The media covers this as some kind of wonderful party, but at the end, there is a lot of crap and people urinating," Dennis said.

“In the Panhandle, there were only about 10 portable toilets set up for the 60,000 race participants. Desperate people, women as well as men, “were going anywhere and everywhere,” Cunnane said.”

I dunno, sounds like this could have been predicted...

That said, where can I get an “Average Joe’s Gym” uniform? I rather liked that movie.

We tried to get out in front of the problem

Probably not the best place to be.

Sounds like behind it would’ve been worse, though.

Heh, that could also be the Democrat Party he’s talking about.

"They were stumbling around, hammered," Dennis said. "Peeing. Women with their boobs hanging out.

Women. Hanging boobs. I can see why San Francisco would have a problem with that.

I’ve been a drunk and I’ve been a runner. But the thought of getting drunk and going for a run has never crossed my mind.

I ran it in 1982. That cured me of running for fun!

I ran in that race last year. It was fun. I am a semi-serious runner.

I remember there were people eating on the outside patio at Flippers cafe along the race route, while--separted by only a hedge--dozens of people were urinating just feet away from the folks enjoying breakfast.

What’s the problem? I mean, people have been peeing on SF for years.

The mob did one thing: they tied up traffic. I entered the city from the East Bay on Sunday morning. Rather than a pleasant drive of 10-15 minutes on Van Ness and Davisadero, I had to detour for about an hour through Haight, etc, then north on Park Presidio, then east on California to reach church.

“Art Mann Presents” covered this for HDNet a couple of years ago.

Art commented that even he was overwhelmed with the amount of ‘man-ass’.

My only run the BtoB was in 1981. I remember at the top of the Hayes Street hill there is a park on the right and there was a big inflated Millet Lite beer can. But, I never saw anyone drinking until the music kicked up at the park.

In those days the scavengers used to hang out in the morning around DeLancy waiting for the race to start so they could grab up all the sweat suits and back packs that runners thought would be safe until they returned. I got good advice from a friend and we bought giant old suits at Good Will for a buck or two and after we warmed up we changed in his van and wore the 'Zoot Suits' to the start line. When the serious runners went off we had plenty of time to strip because we walked in a slow moving crowd for about six blocks before we took our first jogging step.
