Erickson beats Mannix in contest turned nasty (Oregon House Race)

Republican Kevin Mannix's last-minute attack on his 5th Congressional District primary opponent Mike Erickson failed to do the trick.

Erickson defeated Mannix in a race that ended with allegations of dishonesty and hypocrisy over Erickson's anti-abortion position that were disclosed just nine days before ballots were due.

"I'm glad we ran a positive campaign," Erickson said. "I think voters made a clear statement. They're tired of the politics of personal destruction."

Mannix should have resisted the urge to dirty this race up.

I don’t think Mannix was doing anything unfair. This (allegedly paying for an abortion in 2000) is a legitimate issue.

Now, Erickson says he didn’t do it, and I hope that’s true, because if not, this seat, which should have been Republican for many years, will stay Democrat.

Kurt Shrader, who won the Rat nomination for the 5th district, will undoubtily use this free gift from Mannix to attack Erickson... Shrader has until Nov. to lay the groundwork and better organize the attack.
One of Kurt Shrader’s biggest promises is to “Bring our troops home from Iraq with honor and redirect that money into education, health care, and our crumbling infrastructure”... Never heard that before.

Oh Bull Freaking Crap! Mannix was a dead duck from the start. He’s nothing more than a whiney, carpet bagging, two time, tax raising loser. If Erickson runs a smart campaign, he could pick up the seat.

I don’t know if the charges against Erikson are true or not. But Kevin Mannix’s campaign really went into overkill. And this could be the end of his career. If Mannix costs the GOP any chance of winning this race, he deserves to have his career end.

Mike Erikson is an energetic campaigner willing to self-finance, but the potential scandal might have left him too mud-spattered to win.
