Money shocker! Hillary Clinton's campaign debt soars to $31 million
Los Angeles Times ^ | May 21, 2008 | Mark McKinnon

Posted on 05/21/2008 3:17:48 AM PDT by Zakeet

No wonder Sen. Hillary Clinton was so late filing her required campaign financial reports Tuesday night. Her political team didn't want the shocking news in it to overshadow her lopsided thumping of Sen. Barack Obama in Kentucky.

Now comes the morning after, pay-up time. Clinton's campaign debt has now soared to nearly $31 million, according to numbers crunched early this morning by The Times' campaign finance guru, Dan Morain.

She added another $9.5 million in unpaid bills to venders this past month alone, pushing her total debt to venders and herself to the new astronomical figure, about a 50% debt increase in one month.

According to a campaign release put out Tuesday evening as election returns revealed her big win in Kentucky and loss in Oregon, Clinton raised "approximately $22 million" from other people in April. The release also touted that $10 million had poured in within 48 hours of another lopsided Clinton victory over Obama, that one in Pennsylvania, and said it was the second best fundraising month of her entire campaign.

But the number collected is actually closer to $21 million and the release also neglected to mention that she spent $28.9 million, nearly $8 million more than she took in. She used personal loans to make up part of the difference. She also delayed payments to consultants. Including the $9.5 million in unpaid bills from April, she owes consultants and other venders $19.5 million.

Not to mention the total $11.4 million she has loaned herself.

I wonder how many will be STIFFED for the unpaid bills?

How stupid do you have to be to loan money to a Clintoon? Oh wait... I am talking DEMOCRAPS here...

unpaid bills are probably a good way to get around campaign finance laws too

Everyone knows the Clintons don’t pay off monetary debts. The little people should just be honored to have done work for them. Thats enough.

I can't imagine being in $31 million debt. Then again, I'm glad I'm not Hillary Clinton.

A campaign that is in debt 31 million dollars and she wants to run a country?

In all likelyhood, there is something illegal about what Hillary is trying to pull.

If she really owes $31 mill, then she’s not going to be much of a force in 2012, either. She’ll never be able to pay that off, and if she doesn’t, then there will be a lot of folks reminding her of it every day of the campaign.

Clinton is a Democrat ... if her debts are to be paid, it will be done by the taxpayers.

Given the Clinton's predilections for stiffing people, I expect Hillary, when she loses the nomination, will just walk away.

Why is Clinton soldiering on? Why is she going to take this fight to the convention, at such expense to her?

Simple. Clinton has some great dirt on Obama. It will be released a week or so before the convention. It will cause such a stir that enough of the superdelegates will switch their votes to Clinton.

Talk is pretty rampant that she’ll hang that debt around the neck of Obama. He could wipe it out in a month at his current rate of fund raising. Meanwhile she is eating his guts out and making ready for 2012 when she can take on McCain or some other poor sap.

No one ever “loan” money to political campaigns It is surely illegal.

SHE even owes herself over $10,000 on this debt report. Interest on the $11,400,000that she “loaned” her campaign?

A campaign that is in debt 31 million dollars and she wants to run a country?

Well, as she observed during one of the debates when asked whether her lack of business experience was a problem: "The government isn't a profit making enterprise." (Rough paraphrase). So I guess her experience in running up debt is actually a plus.

BTW, for the record, can we STOP saying that the President's job is to "run the country"? I hear that all the time, and it really bugs me.

Dictators run countries. Presidents run one third of the US government. BIG difference.

Prior to FDR, I doubt any American would have put "President" and "run the country" in the same sentence. IMHO, the fact that this phrase rolls off so many tongues so easily is symptomatic of the fundamental disconnect between the traditional American concept of liberty and self-government and the current depressing state of public awareness.

Sounds to me like the reason her political operatives are starting to turn away from her in droves is because they’re starting to see that they aren’t going to get paid. And money was the only reason they were working for her.

Dictators run countries.

And if she was to get elected, there would be no difference.

Every time I hear her shrill voice tell us what a great job she will do to turn around the USA economy, I think about how much money she is in debt in less than 2 years!!!

Must be a totally new record for that amount of debt in a short time.

The one that jumped out at me:

MSHC Partners, Inc. 956,408.53

That's almost a cool one million she owes to this direct mail marketing company run by a bunch of Dems.

Or a future job in the West Wing, perhaps?!

Interesting.... they would not be allowed by current campaign finance laws to ‘donate’ a million bucks, but it looks like they have anyway

How do you order over $10,000 of pizzas without paying for them? Let me call up Domino’s and order a $15.00 pizza and ask them to wait for their money and see how far that gets me. They’d laugh in my face while they were bringing the pizza back to Domino’s.

“She’ll never be able to pay that off, and if she doesn’t, then there will be a lot of folks reminding her of it every day of the campaign”

Might be the last straw for Bill when she tries to get him to help her out by going on a blitz of speaking engagements.

I would think his speaking fees will shrink when she loses.

The upcoming divorce will be more entertaining than the OJ and Micheal Jackson trails put together.

In regards to this one:

Ryan, Phillips, Utrecht & MacKinnon 84,737.04

They're a legal firm specializing in election law. Maybe she has them on retainer .... just in case Hillary! chooses to fight it out regarding hanging chads in FLA like Gore did .... or with her own political party over seating the MI and FL delegates, perhaps?!

She owes REALLY big bucks to Mark Penn's company.

Penn, Schoen & Berland Assoc. LLC 4,825,911.61

What we do

With our more than three decades of political research and consulting experience, Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates is often regarded as the premiere global political polling and strategy firm. At last count, we have worked on nearly 200 political campaigns, including more than 45 overseas (mostly national elections) and federal, state, and local elections across the U.S. And we have been personal political and strategic advisors to more than 30 heads of state (President or Prime Minister).

The reasons for our success are not complicated, but also not easily duplicated. The depth of political consulting strategy perspective we bring with our nearly 200 consultants and professionals, led by Mark Penn, unquestionably one of the top political minds in the world. The strength of our in-house field operations, which allow us to turn around political polls in unmatched time. Our quality data and statistical precision, which ensure that our numbers are dead on. Our cutting-edge war gaming methodologies for determining not just the current state of things, but how we can move forward in the face of competitors’ challenges. The breadth of our integrated services, which include political polling, consulting, field operations, advertising creative development, and media placement.

And the unmatched insight Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates has gained from our corporate work, where different approaches, often backed by large resource commitments, give us a broader set of ideas to draw on than probably any other political research firm. It’s this hybrid background that has given Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates its special place in the world of political research and consulting.

Extending credit to any politician is risky business. Extending credit to a Democrat is beyond risky. Extending credit to a Clinton is like flushing money down the toilet.

"Clinton has some great dirt on Obama. It will be released a week or so before the convention. It will cause such a stir that enough of the superdelegates will switch their votes to Clinton."

Yep! And they are working on the very last detail as to how to make it look like a Republican released the dirt. Once that is in place... Look out Obama!
