Malignant Gliomas Affect About 10,000 Americans Annually
Washington Post ^ | Tuesday, May 20, 2008 | Rob Stein

About 10,000 Americans are diagnosed each year with malignant gliomas, the kind of tumor that Sen. Edward Kennedy is fighting, according to the National Cancer Institute. Only about half are alive a year after being diagnosed, and only about 25 percent survive two years, said Robert Laureno, chief of neurology at the Washington Hospital Center. "In general, it's a very grim kind of prognosis," he said.

The left parietal lobe, where Kennedy's tumor is located, is responsible for a host of crucial bodily functions, including the ability to speak and understand language, as well as sensation and movement on the right side of the body.

"You may leave the person unable to speak or understand anything," Laureno said. "That would tremendously lessen the quality of life."

Patients receive radiation and chemotherapy to control the tumor's growth. That usually consists of seven weeks of targeted radiation treatment combined with a drug called Temodar to sensitize the tumor to radiation, followed by five days of the drug every month for as long as the treatments appear to be working.

"The lucky patients continue for two years if it's working," Taylor said. "If you relapse within months, the enthusiasm to do more is obviously less."

I never had the number before, I have known of this type of tumor - it can’t be operated on with much success. I hope the Senator will meet with his priest soon.

Truly sad, I’ll be praying for him. I hated his politics and many things he did, but, I don’t hate the man. God be with you Ted Kennedy.

Some neurosurgeons are speculating it is stage 3 or 4 because the tumor is large and was responsible for seizures, not difficulty naming objects or comprehension which are the usual symptoms for stage 1 or 2.

Now theologically, Ted is a Catholic but pro-abortion and of course that Mary Jo thing he did.

So, what can Ted expect if life expectancy is months to 3 years?
Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” This verse exactly mirrors John 3:16! Eternal life is contrasted to death—to perishing! The wages of sin is death, not eternal torture in hell.
Psalm 146:3-4: “Put not your trust…in the son of man…His breath goes forth, he returns to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.”
Ezekiel 18:4, 20 : “The soul that sins, it shall die”

If he hasn’t already done this, he needs to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. That will be the only thing that will save him.

I don’t know who I’m more angry at, the few inhumane jerks who make innapropriate comments, or the moderaters who have been shutting down replies to all the threads about this. I wanted to say my piece about Teddy’s cancer. First off I disagree with virtually everything Ted Kennedy stands for. I believe he has been responsable for tremendous damage to our country. That said, I regret what has happened to him and wish the best to him and his family. I hope for his sake that he has minimal pain during his remaining time on earth.

If I was the Senator I would quit my job immediately and spend what time I had left with my family and doing things I love.

I prefer the pulled comment tact, rather than a pulled thread. Many prayers offered up and well wishes to his family that were heartfelt. Let the pulled threads bear evidence that this is a site of good taste and posers of (mostly) exemplary character.

Blessings to him and his family in their trials dealing with this devastating prognosis. May God shepherd and guide them and give them strength.

Probably each of us has lost a loved one to cancer. This family will experience anguish over the coming months. I pray not only for a humane treatment cycle, but those nearest and dearest may be unsettled from their foolish this-life-only worldview and flee to the only Source of true comfort when we face our common end - to which all the power and money in the world has no response. I truly fear for this man's soul.

"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment" (Hebrews 9:27);

"Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:" (Proverbs 24:17).

I agree pull the abuse button on the abusive comments but let the rest of us post our concerns for the Kennedys whom many of us have political disagreements with as well and discuss the illness itself in general terms.

The illness itself is quite horrid. Brain tumors are fairly infrequent, as the brain is a non-replicating organ kept safer than most by the blood brain barrier. But when Brain cancers do happen it is a hard thing to deal with, anywhere you cut cuts out part of you. It doesn’t look like Senator Kennedy will be among the living for long, it is a devastating prognosis.

I’ve lost a number of close friends to brain tumors. I wouldn’t wish this on any man. When you get right down to it, we are all brothers and sisters on this planet, and we are all loved by our Heavenly Father, regardless of our politics. I hope Senator Kennedy gets right with Him, devotes his remaining time to his family, and suffers little. Prayers going up for his wife and children.

Doesn’t matter what he did, as long as he has the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Romans 3:23 for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God. The only saving grace for any of us is Jesus.

I pinged a moderator to one of the more ignorant threads. There’s no explaining some peoples behavior...

Agreed, it is hard however to post a sincere comment of good wishes when a thread has been locked after only 10 to 25 replies. It is particularly irksome when there were only 1 to 2 inappropriate comments.

No kidding. If they protest at Ted's funeral. What will the drive by media who seems to cheer these clowns on do?

We do want to “keep it classy” and not be the equivalent of the sick haters at Daily Kos and such who showed such glee in the death of Charlton Heston.
