Pelosi: House Overwhelmingly Votes to Take Action Against Oil Price Fixing

Press Releases Contact: Brendan Daly/Nadeam Elshami 202-226-7616 For Immediate Release 05/20/2008 Pelosi: House Overwhelmingly Votes to Take Action Against Oil Price Fixing

Washington, D.C.- Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on H.R. 6074, the Gas Price Relief for Consumers Act, which passed the House by a vote of 324 to 84, despite a veto threat:

“The House today with a strong bipartisan and veto-proof margin voted to hold foreign oil cartels and Big Oil accountable.

“The legislation provides the Justice Department with a critical tool to pursue antitrust actions against OPEC-controlled entities for fixing prices and creates a new Justice Department Petroleum Industry Antitrust Task Force to examine anticompetitive market practices in the oil industry. It also requires that the mergers of Big Oil companies in recent years be examined for anticompetitive effects.

“Instead of using a veto threat to shield cartels and Big Oil companies from accountability, the Bush Administration should work with the Congress to protect American consumers.”

Just what are they going to do.

Actually I think OPEC is a classic example of a monopoly but since they are composed of separate nations I don't see how we can do anything about it.

promise me this, you promise me that
You promise me anything under the sun
Then you give me a kiss,
And your grabbing your hat
And your off to the races again
When I think of the time gone by

Adelaide, Adelaide!

And I think of the way I tried!

Adelaide!

I could honestly die.

Call a lawyer and sue me,
Sue me
What can you do me,
I love you.
Give a holler and hate me
Hate me
Go ahead, hate me!
I LOVE YOU

The best years of my life, I was a fool to give you you

Alright, already, I’m just a no-goodnick!
Alright, already, it’s true.
So new.
So sue me, sue me
What can you do me?
I love you

You gamble it here,
You gamble it there
You gamble on everything, all except me
And I’m sick of you keeping me up in the air
Till your back in the money again
When I think of the time gone by

Adelaide, Adelaide!

And I think of the way I tried!

Adelaide!

I could honestly die.

Serve a paper and sue me, sue me
What can you do me,
I love you.
Give a holler and hate me,
Hate me,
Go ahead, hate me!

When you wind up in jail
Don’t come to me to bail you out!

Alright, already, so call a policeman!
Alright, already, it’s true
So new
So sue me, sue me
What can you do me
I love you!

You’re at it again,
You’re running the game
I’m not gonna play second fiddle to that.
And I’m telling you now that we’re through!
When I think of the time gone by

Adelaide, Adelaide!

And I think of the way I tried!

Adelaide!

I could honestly die.

Sue me, sue me
Shoot bullets through me
I love you!!

This ninnyhammered twit doesn't understand how the price of a barrel of oil is set. U. S. producers have nothing to do with this.

If oil is selling for $130 (equivalent) on the open world market, American producers should lower their price to $50?

Halleluiah!
The Democratic Congress solved the oil crisis!

By developing new sources of petroleum?— No
By drilling in ANWR?— No
By drilling off the coast of Florida?— No
By drilling off of the east coast?— No
By drilling off of the west coast?— No
By drilling off the Alaskan coast?— No
By building oil refineries?— No
By developing shale oil deposits?— No
By adding nuclear energy production?— No
By adding clean coal production?— No

By suing OPEC?—Yes

Morons. Let's see, tax oil companies more so the end up drilling less and charging more. Go after OPEC so they now have no reason to increase production. Not allow drilling in various places in the USA. Limit nukes, clean coal, and other alternative energies. ....

No, actually, they aren't morons. THEY ARE TRAITORS.

“Actually I think OPEC is a classic example of a monopoly”

A monopoly only consists of one firm (along with a few other factors). OPEC is a classic collusive oligopoly (which effectively has the same effect as a monopoly. A cartel is illegal in the U.S. but not internationally. Maybe Nancy can get the U.N. and international courts to help out. Or maybe she can start by pushing domestic options.

Good point. I don’t like high gas prices either, but sometimes I wonder if these Dems. understand economics or how world oil markets work.

Hillary said she will work with OPEC and through the WTO to bring down oil prices if she’s elected. But is that realistic? Does Hillary understand how oil markets function? Does she realize her green energy programs won’t make a big dent in our need for oil?

hey Big Guy ....

I was in Mexico yesterday. Gas is $3 a gallon, 20 miles south of San Diego, in Tijuana. Almost $4 in San Diego.

Reason? No gas taxes.

In CA, taxes account for almost $1.25 per gallon. The oil companies make approx 20c a gallon.

The government is making out like a bandit and blaming "big oil". It's a Big Scam!

Yep, the Democrat solution to everything... Send in the trial lawyers! The only thing this would accomplish is another plunge in the value of the dollar as the Arab world pulls all of their investment dollars out of America and sends them to China.

That being said, I hope the age of oil ends in my life time and I have the pleasure of watching the Arab world degenerate back into the same standard of living and global irrelevance as sub-saharan Africa....

There comes a time when no one listens anymore. The Democrats have reduced Congress to a continuous partisan circus designed to get them elected.

I can just imagine what Congress will do about the Mideast, Russian, Venezuelan, Brazilian, Chinese and other oil moguls—nothing because there is nothing we can do.

Someone needs to start campaigning against the RAT Congress—no oil shale, no Anwar, no off shore, no nuclear power, no clean coal and so forth. Take the battle to them and tell the people the truth—all those actions by the RATS have caused the problem we are now in.

In the meantime, I note that the alleged Republican Congressional losses are all to those espousing pro-life, pro-gun and anti gay marriage. The RATS have discovered to win a few “litmus test conservatives” all it takes is to either run a RAT as a conservative or convince the electorate the Pubbie is racist—a Maccacca user—or something close to this.

“Instead of using a veto threat to shield cartels and Big Oil companies from accountability, the Bush Administration should work with the Congress to protect American consumers.”

This is Pelosi's big idea? I don't get it... how is bargaining from a weak position going to help solve our energy crisis?

Wouldn't it be much better to open up oil drilling in United States, allow more gasoline refineries and reduce the tax on gasoline a much better one?

Maybe I'm being a little too logical here...

Liberal DemoRAT Energy Plan:

1. You can’t drill for oil anywhere.
2. You can’t build a refinery anywhere.
3. You can’t build a nuclear power plant anywhere.
4. You can’t burn coal for electricity.
5. You can’t allow the oil companies to reinvest their profits into exploration.
6. But you can drive up the price of food by subsidizing an ethanol industry that takes land out of food production while using more energy than it creates.
7.You must continue to tax every gallon of gas that we put in our tanks.
8.You must threaten all energy users with additional ‘carbon taxes’.
9. And just in case some entrepreneur out there somewhere may have an idea for an alternative energy concept that just might work, you must raise the capital gains tax so that investors have less capital and less incentive to invest in his/her project. count your blessings.

With the coming change in administration and Liberals in Congress, it| will be guaranteed that the price of gasoline hits $10 per gallon as our economy dumps. All this and more thanks to anti-American, anti-military Liberal DemoRATS whose platform is “enjoy living in America the new third-world toilet” where Liberal Big Brothers are in power.

“The House today with a strong bipartisan and veto-proof margin voted to hold foreign oil cartels and Big Oil accountable." --Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the HoR
Yes, and the Democrats also bluffed a "new direction" for Iraq in the '06 elections.

Regardless that Congress has had since the 1973 oil embargo to address oil independence and oil pricing, history is repeating itself. So I'm keeping an eye on energy options.

Although I don't use this product, since people are starting to use bicycles more, people might be interested in this autoshifting bicycle.

Autoshifting bicycle
Also, I'm keeping an eye on developments in bio-fuel production.

First, the bad news about ethanol. Ethanol fires are evidently harder to control than gasoline fires.

Ethanol fires hard to control 1
Ethanol fires hard to control 2
Hopefully, ways will be developed to make controlling ethanol fires easier.

On the brighter side concerning ethanol, there's now evidence that people might get as much, or more, bang per buck for their gas dollars with gas / ethanol mixtures.

Gas-competitive gas / ethanol mixtures
Also, I was surprised by the introduction of a machine (popularly known as a still) for making home-made ethanol.
EFuel100
In stark contrast to the 1700 gallons of water required to make one gallon of corn-based ethanol as indicated by the OP, the EFuel100 uses only 170 gallons of water to produce 35 gallons of ethanol In other words, the EFuel100 uses less than 1% (about 0.2%) as much water as corn ethanol, under five gallons, to produce one gallon of ethanol.

But also note that the water used in the EFuel100 process does not take into account the water needed to grow the sugar that is used for this process.

And watch out for fines for violating biofuel regulations.

Fines for violating biofuel regulations
Also, progress is being made in the development of other non-corn ethanol production technologies as well.
Non-corn ethanol
Finally, I've also been hearing good things about biodiesel production but need to find some links.
