George Takei is going ring shopping.
The Star Trek helmsman and his partner of 21 years, Brad Altman, are engaged to be married.
"This is something we've been passionately committed to, so, no, there's no cold feet," Takei told E! News today.
...Altman proposed last Thursday, shortly after the California Supreme Court struck down a state law banning same-sex unions.
Takei, who publicly came out in a magazine interview in 2005, announced his plans in a blog post Friday, the same day Ellen DeGeneres took to her talk show to announce her engagement to actress Portia de Rossi.
Takei, 71, said he and Altman, his business manager, would have taken the plunge years agoif they'd been legally allowed to do so.
He said they resisted the urge to go to San Francisco, when that California city began marrying gay couples in 2004, because they wanted to be certain of their union's legality. (Ultimately, the San Francisco marriages were voided by court order.) And he said they resisted the urge to marry elsewhere, such as Massachusetts, because they wanted to marry in California, where Takei is a second-generation native son.
Right now, the couple has a date range, but not yet a datesometime after mid-June, when same-sex marriages will become lawful in California, and sometime before November, when a measure seeking to ban such unions could be on the ballot.
If the antigay-marriage initiative does wind up on the California ballot, Takei promised to campaign against it "vigorously."

I was trying to think of something clever to say, but the only thing I can think of is: “God this disgusting crap just makes me want to puke”.
ditto.....
I guess he aint flying Sulu anymore.
James Doohan (Scotty) was gay also ... must be the acting profession that attracts them ,, kinda like playing softball is for lesbians..
With the stroke of a pen four idiot judges repeal and trash 5000+ years of Biblical tradition and Judeo-Christian heritage. Muslims can smell the rot, they love weak self centered (It’s all about me!) idiots like this
An imprint went wrong there. Very wrong.

...or are you just glad to see me?"
And BTW, I would have been fine NOT knowing that Doohan was gay too. Just damn...
How did you hear about it?
He doesn't act gay.
according to wikipedia, James Doohan was married three times and sired four children.
and Ahhnold will most likely give the man-bride away!

repeating my comment from the original Sulu marries thread, George Takei is 70 now. I’d cut him some slack. This isn’t so much a marriage as it is estate planning.

Oh, that emoticon is TOO funny!!
Accurately put
Worm hole?
Doohan was NOT gay..IMO.
Hats off to Takei for being with the same partner for 21yrs.
That’s pretty good, homo or hetero.
I'm sure they've been taking the plunge regularly! BARF!
Damn, now I’ve gotta burn my Startrek tapes.
WHAT? First I've heard that one - and Scotty was a D-Day vet too.
We have "Last Wills" for that sort of thing.
One more yawn from the peanut gallery on the slouching stroll to Gomorreh...
Doohan was not gay...period!
Mr. Sulu...engage...warp factor...off the charts...
4 men in woman’s robes tear up 5,000 yrs + of Western culture..is anyone surprised?
Idioms that don't belong ping.
There’s nothing more pathetic in this world than an old fag.
LOL - Possible new tagline.

why keep being married to WOMEN.
from one to another.
Scotty was a MAN.
71 year old “bride”
Now, THAT is illogical.
I'd agree with you on that.
I may disagree with the law, but Takei has not been an "in your face" type and only "came out" a couple of years ago. He certainly doesn't seem to be flaunting the law, but has taken a measured, considered approach, following the changes in statute. He's been much more discreet about his sexuality in public than many skanky heteros and for that he has my respect.
I saw a recent clip of a roast of Shanter that was really raw, but that is the nature of those events. Personally, I'm not that interested in who or with what gender anyone in Hollywood is fooling around with. Just not my business, doesn't affect me or mine.
Captain Nim is a naughty naughty man.
James Doohan was also wounded on D-Day. I got his autograph and noticed a finger missing. Found out later that he lost it on D-Day, which was his first combat assignment.
...or “Midway”.... err, well, he’s gotta be in there somewhere...
Yep. My brother, bless him, was gay, and he was an actor for forty years. A great guy — but insecure (had a terrible inferiority complex) and I believe could only prove his worth to himself and others by being on stage. He was more comfortable being what he was not than what he really was.
OK, someone correct me if I’m wrong,
but previous to this ruling, there was a legal designation for gay couples - “domestic partnerships” with all the same legal recognition (inheritance, hospital visitation, etc) as actual marriage.
The ruling was that the word “marriage” could no longer hold its special and time transcendant definition of “one man, one woman”, thus diluting the word and the institution (which was the whole intent, all along).
Jaques:So it is, so it is. And in most of those ages there is a duty to pair off, mate, propagate, raise and educate the bairns that become the future. May all the beloved brothers, nieces, sons and daughters, uncles, and even dads and moms who fall ignorant of that duty, remember it!
All the world's a stage, Shakespeare, As You Like It Act 2, scene 7
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages.
Even if they have to act ... for without the future lies an emptied stage.
More on Jimmy Doohan:
At the outbreak of the Second World War, Doohan, aged 19, joined the Royal Canadian Artillery, and was eventually commissioned as a lieutenant in the 13th Field Regiment, part of the divisional artillery of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. Doohan went to the United Kingdom in 1940 for what became years of training. His first combat assignment was the invasion of Normandy at Juno Beach on D-Day. Shooting two snipers along the way, Doohan led his unit to higher ground through a field of anti-tank mines and took defensive positions for the night. Crossing between command posts at 11:30 that night, Doohan took six rounds from a Bren gun fired by a nervous sentry:[3] four in his leg, one in the chest, and one through his right middle finger. The bullet to his chest was halted by the silver cigarette case he carried, and his wounded right middle finger was amputated, which he would conceal during his career as an actor. However the missing finger can be seen in the episode Trouble with Tribbles.
Despite his injuries, Doohan remained in the military, trained as a pilot and flew an artillery observation plane. He flew Taylorcraft Auster Mark V aircraft for 666 (AOP) Squadron, RCAF, as a Royal Canadian Artillery officer in a flying role in support of #1 Canadian AGRA (Army Groups Royal Artillery). All three Canadian (AOP) RCAF Squadrons were manned by Artillery Officer-pilots and ‘aircrewed’ by Artillery personnel serving as observers.[4][5]
Though he was never actually a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, he was once labelled the “craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Forces.” One of the many legendary stories of his flying years tells of Doohan slaloming a plane variously cited as a Hurricane or a jet trainer between mountainside telegraph poles to prove it could be done, which earned him a serious reprimand.[6]
OK..I’ll be the one to say it....
“Mr Sulu..Set course for Uranus”
Doohan was thrice married, the last time to his third wife Wende for 31 years. He was the father of seven children.
The odds are that he isn't in a monogamous relationship. Few male homosexual relationships are monogamous, even the few that last a significant length of time.
And, few things more rare, other than perhaps multimillion dollar lottery winners.
The wedding video will air in syndication for decades.
