It probably would have been better to use the phrase as a parenthetical modifier after “Byrd.”
To: Salena Zito
Irrelevant except for the fact that Byrd wants his obituary to read “the last 30 years of Robert Byrd’s life were dedicated to racial harmony, as an example he endorsed Barrack Obama as President.”
Byrd is a turd.

Nice dangling modifier in the headline.Yeah. It leaves the door open to speculation, doesn't it. Of course, the MSM is unqualified to use logic in assessing their writing.

Gee, and here I always thought Byrd was the one with KKK membership on his resume.

In the 2004 election, their headline would have been “John McCain supports John Kerry, wounded Viet Nam war hero”

The Audacity of Giving Away the Store?
The Audacity of Selling Out?
The Audacity of Abject Surrender?
The Audacity of Folding our Tents?
hey, this is fun, I’m just getting started...!

The original headline was a little different. “Byrd endorses a shining young statesmen”. Nope, no bias there.

StatesMEN? Is obama more than one person? You have to wonder about the quality of a paper that can’t keep track of singular and plural words in a headline.

Byrd endorses a shining young statesmen [Byrd endorses Obama, Byrd former KKK] Of course if a Republican called Obama a "shining young statesman" there would immediately be cries of racism since we all know it was code alluding to "shoe shining."

Be careful when using the “S” word in a headline. Even “Statesman” is questionable when referring to Obama!

Honestly, how does one go from being a KKK member to supporting a guy that believes that Jesus is black, and God's purpose is to destroy the white race?!?

So much for “The Will of the People” in West Virginia.

Obviously, with their endorsements of Obama, neither of the two Senators from W.V. have much respect for the views of their Constituents.

I don’t think that you read the article. If you had, you would realize that Salena was quoting Byrd by stating the “shining young statesmen” part. It’s a common practice among reporters to put parts of quotes in headlines. About the only criticism I can see in the title is that shining young statesmen should have been put in quotes.
