Media lies about Obama Rally
Several | 5/18 | Wil H

Posted on 05/18/2008 11:34:36 PM PDT by Wil H

Multiple sources in the Media report that between 60,000 and 75,000 attended the Obama rally in Portland, Oregon on Sunday.

A simple check of Google Earth, using the "ruler" tool shows that the area of Waterfront Park used for the rally is approximately 172,000 square feet.

An person, standing upright, occupies an area of about 4 square feet, so even allowing for no gaps in the crowd , with everyone jammed in shoulder to shoulder, you can't get more than 43,000 people into the area.

Clearly, there was space left around the dias, and there was space for people to get in and out of the area.

Ther is NO WAY there was 60,000 people there.

It’s Portland. John Kerry packed them in last election at the same venue. I would not be surprised at all at the 60,000 number. It’s downtown and it was a beautiful day. Lots of people live there.

Interesting. I just heard a clip of Obama on the radio claiming 80,000!

This is my reply from another thread with pics. (I didn't format)

Gotta be angle of the shot, cropping ....... something looks odd. Waterfront Park is not as wide and expansive as the shot looks. You SHOULD see either trees or the Willamette River somewhere. I will say there are a lot of Obamarama signs around town, but you have to understand that these socialist idiots voluntarily voted a county income tax in. Also the only American buried in the Kremlin Wall came from here.

I saw those also, and was mocking the Reuters and AP propaganda machine that is clearly pulling for Obama.

Anyone got the lastest Obama rally photos ready to post with this article?

Per the Obama campaign, 75,000 people (60,000 in the gates and 15,000 outside of them)

The 60k was confirmed by the local FD as inside. Now the headlines are listing 80k - listing the above formula for totals, but add that, "dozens of boaters could be seen floating in the river."

What are you talking about? Get a clue first. The space that was left around the dias area is not because people just wanted to stay away from Obama, but because, the can’t guarantee security with that many people in the park. That’s the only reason there is “space” around the dias area.

I’m in Portland. One factor might be that we usually don’t matter to the nomination process so this year is a rarity. I didn’t think this area would hold as many people as it looks like are there.

I saw a comment on the Washington Post site about this event and a person described gong to this event and I think it was a she and she said she voted for Bush twice and is now going to vote for Obama because he was so “inspiring”.

Sigh....Hitler was inspiring also....

Pix of Obama rally and other events in Tom McCall Park for comparison in this thread: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2017910/posts The picture AP is promoting is not photoshopped, just expertly cropped to make it seem like there are people surrounding Obama 'as far as the eye can see' Clearly this is not the case.

Note the bleachers set up for the photo line. The net effect is the only shot photographers have is the candidate and ‘multitudes’ of people in the background.

The folks managing his campaign are no dummies. There are pictures of other appearances where the pictures that get promoted are not necessarily reflective of reality. There is one in a gymnasium that has been posted elsewhere that really drives this home.

Hate to break it to you, but if each person represented a circle with a 60” (5 feet around) circumference, then they would occupy a mere 2 square feet of space, HALF of your 4 square feet/person.

Using that, you could squeeze two skinny Vegan Hippies into your 4 square feet “shoulder to shoulder”. That would DOUBLE your 43,000 figure, or give 86,000; patently unreasonable.

60,000, a mere 1.4 times your max of 43,000, is therefore not unreasonable, all else being considered truthful.

OTOH, methinks the buggers lied anyway.

Are you sure about that? 2003 Portland Blues Festival. Same place. http://home.comcast.net/~edmoblues/main.html MSM would love to have everyone believe that Obama is breaking attendance records wherever he goes, blah blah blah. He had a good crowd (thanks to a free warm up concert and who knows what other perks) but one doubts he strode across the Willamette to deliver his message.

Simple. There was a free concert before Obama spoke with a local popular band called the "Decemberists". Here is a little about them from Wikipedia:

The Decemberists are a rock band from Portland, Oregon, fronted by singer/songwriter Colin Meloy. Their debut EP, 5 Songs, was self-released in 2001. Their fourth full-length album, The Crane Wife, was released on 3 October 2006 by Capitol Records, and is the band's first appearance on a major label. Named both in reference to the Russian Decembrist Revolt (which may explain its use of the National Anthem of the Soviet Union as an introduction at many concerts) and to the atmosphere associated with the month of December,[2] the band's songs range from upbeat pop to instrumentally lush ballads, ...

Now do you see how it all fits? A Socialist/Marxist candidate being introduced by a band that starts off with the Soviet National Anthem!!

It was a fabulous day here - I thought about going down there to see what the commotion was about but then thought better of it. I didn’t need to hear that I am the one I’m waiting for then get stuck waiting on a whole bunch of other people to move so I could get home.

People buy into the charisma - that got Bill Clinton to the Oval Office. Pitiful.

The Russian Decembrists were not Marxists, they were monarchists in 1825 who were loyal to Tsar Nicholas I’s elder brother.

I think the Soviet Union’s anthem was ‘The Internationale,’ the anthem of the international socialist movement.

When you click on the Wikipedia link, you get the Soviet National anthem. Yeah, I know, Wikipedia’s often wrong. Either way, ‘The Internationale,’ or the Soviet National anthem, if it can be verified they played it, it will make a great anti-Obama propaganda piece.
