CHICAGO (CBS) ― More students are speaking out against gun violence in their neighborhoods.
They met Sunday to show Illinois lawmakers and the governor that they want tougher gun laws.
CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports that the high school students have collected more than 1,000 petition signatures.
Each stood with their own story of gun violence.
"It hurts me to see the youth, because I have a friend who died, Blair Holt, from gun violence,' said Christine Goggins, a student from the Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy.
"Before I was born, 18 years ago, a 16-year-old New Trier student shot and killed my aunt, uncle and their unborn baby. I never got to meet them," said Liz Jenkins, a New Trier High School student.
They're high school students who have been collecting more than 1,000 signatures from people who want stricter gun laws in Illinois.
"I really just want to see guns off the street, period," said Eddie Bland, a student at Al Raby High School.
The Illinois Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence says it wants the state to ban assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines weapons like those reportedly used in the Virginia Tech shootings.
The group also wants required background checks for all gun buyers no matter where they purchase guns.
"We know from ATF where illegal guns are coming from; many of them are coming from private sellers -- others are coming from gun dealers," said Nina Vinik of the Legal Community Against Violence.
Right now, Illinois requires gun owners to have a valid firearm owners identification card which includes a background check. But sometimes people who shouldn't qualify slip through, like the suspect in the NIU shooting.
He'd received mental health treatment, but passed a background check and purchased his guns legally.
Supporters at today's press conference say the idea is to close loopholes that allow guns to get into the hands of criminals. But lawmakers say passing that kind of legislation is a difficult task.
"It's difficult because we have a regional issue. Legislators in downstate Illinois feel like we're impeding on their right to own handguns -- we're trying to remove guns from responsible gun owners and that's completely not the case," said Rep. Deborah Graham (D-78th).
The Illinois Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence formed last year to promote gun policy reform.
It is the culture, specifically the lack of intact nuclear families, not the guns.
This is what happens when you don’t teach “the children” about the meaning of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights and explain to them that hundreds of thousands of Americans died protecting those documents.
Well, off to the gun store tomorrow. I wish these little bastards would make their way down to the central part of the state.
Okay, that came out wrong. What I meant is I am going to have to make a purchase before more gun laws come in to place here in Illinois. As for the useful idiots I would like to give them an education on individual rights.
Poor, ignorant fools. They do not realize that the people they are taking guns away from are law-abiding citizens. Their actions make it tougher for regular citizens to acquire the means by which to protect themselves, their families, and neighborhoods. Meanwhile, criminals, who are not bound by the limits of the law, will continue to amass firearms and lay havock to innocent citizens.

They are the product of the DELIBERATE suppression of the teaching of TRUE American history. Brainwashed and indoctrinated, not taught. This is what you get — good little Marxists who have no idea what the Constitution and its Bill of Rights are about. It is the agenda of the left.
Christine Goggins should go down to Comiskey Park but go to the other side of the Dan Ryan.
After she gets raped, she may be shot by someone with an illegal gun.
Maybe then, she will have more appreciation for allowing law abiding people to have legal gun ownership, that is, if she is still alive.
Short visit to the wrong side of the “tracks,” valuable education.
From what I understand, the politicians in your state can't even get the dead deer off the street.

As for this ridiculous statement...The gun dealers are not the ones selling firearms to criminals, at least not intentionally. The background checks are mandatory (at least they are in my NJ). The illegal guns are not coming from gun dealers or private sellers...they come from the black market, which is totally different from a private seller. Any gun owner can decide to privately sell their firearm. Not illegal. Their terminology in this article is dangerous, as it paints gun owners desiring to sell their firearms--without using a middle-man/gun-dealer--as criminals and accessories to illegal firearm trafficing.

Great because you did it!

This is the state where you need a special card just to LOOK at a gun.
Asshats.
Wasnt there a city, county in Georgia that tried to make it mandatory for all its citizens to carry. I believe that the law was suppressed, however to this day, gun crime is non-existent there, just by the threat that all members of that community might be armed?
If somebody somewhere had that magical wand they could wave that would rid the world of guns, it wouldn’t take a week before criminals were making guns in their home work shops. They might not look as nice as the guns we have now—but they could shoot and be deadly.
Stricter than what? They’re just one of two red states (see map on post showing states with gun laws) that have draconian gun laws that defy the Constitution’s 2nd. Amendment ...
The teachers probably put the kids up to this as part of their extreme left wing indoctrination.

The most disconcerting aspect of this story is that these poor benighted children have gotten the notion that social problems are solved by governments and more laws; self-reliance has been totally programmed out of them.

Maybe Armalite should relocate to a more "hospitable" state? The reason I bought this particular EBR is because the Illinois State Police have been buying this EXACT model for several years now and it gets rave reviews by them for being very good a popping bad guys.We also know where the criminals are coming from, they're being created by the thousands every year in big cities like Chicago and New York.
Only partially tongue in cheek:
How long will we allow these big cities to create thousands of criminals every year with impunity?
We must get the lawsuits going to force these cities to stop the creation of criminals, if they won't do so, the courts must step in and take over the day to day running of these cities.
Here, let me say it again........... Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.
PLEASE don’t tell me what that rifle is doing on your lap!
Idiots such as these are responsible for more deaths than all wars combined since recorded history began.
Individually they may not harm a fles, but they make it possible for evil individuals to do so.
It's a rifle. It kills. Duh. :)
Individuals such as this never “get it”.
They live their entire lives stupid and when they die they are still stupid.
Most of us learn as we live. These types never do. They are born stupid, they live stupid and they will die stupid.
Graybeard, with these individuals the answer would be “c”.
Tragically, however, they do vote.
It didn’t come out ‘’wrong’’ at all. You’ve just been (mildly, I hope) somewhat infected with PC.
I know, right, Goebbels would be proud.
Went to a gunshow today. For the first time I can ever recall, the ATF had a table. At a gun show.
Needless to say it wasn’t well-attended. The ATF table. The show was packed.
I almost walked up and told them they should be selling those ATF tshirts that say ATF should be a convenience store. But I figured they had heard it already :)
Gun Control IS important. Every law abiding citizen should know how to control their gun. Like any right, it comes with responsibilities. More people die from cigarettes, car accidents and the like. How many lives have been saved when a law abiding citizen was able to defend themselves from certain death.
They don’t teach that in schools
“Each stood with their own story of gun violence.”
If you know very many people who have been shot, you need to get a new circle of friends and, more importantly, move.
The media is defining gun culture to an outrageous point.
In the comedy “My Mom’s New Boyfriend”, the agent makes a big deal to get his gun and deal with a love-sick, kind-looking Italian chef midnight serenading and wailing his love for the Mom.
He needs a gun for that!
All over the media it’s pointing guns at everyone and everything.
I guess you won’t have to worry about her too much!
Would that be the same ATF who's field agent shot himself with the loaded Glock in a classroom full of highschool kids? I know you all have seen that.DEA, not ATF: Lee Paige, patron saint of The Only Ones*
have you guys been gettin local ads for 'mayors against the gun show lOOphole' ??? Been seeing it for a week or so here...
Agreed!
Nope......such an ad here is political sucide. Gun Show this weekend.

These kids are stupid. I could shoot down any argument they have.
