Razor-Sharp Concertina Wire Installed at U.S.-Mexico Border
Los Angeles Times ^ | May 17, 2008 | Richard Marosi

Posted on 05/17/2008 5:41:05 AM PDT by kellynla

SAN DIEGO -- — The U.S. Border Patrol is installing razor-sharp concertina wire atop border fencing between San Diego and Tijuana, marking a major shift in approach along a frequently violent stretch of the frontier.

The triple-strand wire, meant to keep smugglers from attacking agents, will stretch five miles when completed this summer -- the longest expanse of this type of wire ever used on the Southwest border.

Federal authorities in the past have avoided using fortifications with such negative symbolism. Hundreds of miles of barriers going up in other areas have had to meet "aesthetically pleasing" federal design standards.

Critics say the new approach is inhumane and could leave illegal immigrants bloodied.

Border officials in San Diego say it was necessary and already is proving effective.

They say they opted to augment the existing fencing with razor wire amid escalating violence across from Colonia Libertad, one of Tijuana's most notorious smuggling enclaves.

The hilly area, roughly between the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry, is already one of the most heavily fortified along the Southwest border, with primary and secondary fences, stadium lighting and camera towers.

"But critics say it disregards immigrants' safety?"

The author is more concerned about the "safety" of illegals and those who would import illegal drugs into America than the security & "safety" of America & Americans...but of course...the article is from the Left Angeles Times!

And the geniuses at the Times wonder why their circulation & advertising revenue have been dropping off like the Titanic!

Unfortunately for us and for Mexico, the situation in that nation is going south rapidly. We need fortifications to stop Zetas from raiding our country. If Mexico can’t stop the Zetas, we must.

If this affects illegal immigration, well, sorry—could you go to the nearest U.S. consulate and apply legally? Oh, you can’t read or write in Spanish? Then why would you think you could prosper in the U.S. in the first place? We have enough people who won’t learn and are doomed to menial labor.

At least you can see razor wire before you hit it, unlike this setup that the Mexicans are using in a blatant attempt to decapitate Border Patrol agents.

I can't believe they are doing this. Concertina wire is fairly safe and injury from it is easily avoided. If you see concertina wire just assume you are trying to get into an area you are not wanted. Concertina wire is an inanimate object and will not attack you. If You stay away from the wire it is as safe as nerf material.

If it was up to me, there would be a double wall fence that stretches the entire length of the US/Mexico border. The area between the two fences, 50 t0 100 feet, would be filled with a mixture of barbed wire, razor ribbon and concertina wire.

OK. Fine. People just have to stop trying to enter the country illegally and they will be perfectly safe. Problem solved.

Now wait a minute...you’re not supposed to interject common sense into this discussion when it comes to the border and the “safety” and security of America and Americans...you’re only supposed to be concerned with the “safety” of criminals who would traffic illegal drugs and/or those who would be in this country illegally.

Why is this wire being installed at the U.S.- Mexican border?

Senator McCain stated in a speech just a few days ago that the border "was secure".

There seems to be a little disconnect here, NLOL.

What is really sad is that is what most of the border will look like after all the BS by Jorge and Jerkoff, they do not intend to build any fence. Period, other than show and tell. Jerkoff has already exempted over 430 miles of the 700 miles of fence, therefore he only plans on Halfa** building about 370 miles.

There was a good reason that Giuliani got rid of the window squeegees , and that communities cover up graffiti as soon as possible. If you allow minor crimes to stand, the bad guys push harder and harder until they get a response.

Our spineless, no-common-sense, get-myself-reelected "leaders" have allowed those harmless little illegals to have their way for decades, and if they can get away with that, why not push harder? It's only human nature.

Now things are getting violent. What a surprise.

In Tucson, the murder, property crime, drug traffic, and identity theft rates are accelerating fast, but local news and law enforcement don't dare tell us how much of it is due to illegals.

State and local law enforcement are beginning to respond. We aren't being told, but I'm betting the pols are getting an earful from a lot of enraged constituents. I know if someone steals my identity, and it takes me two miserable years to straighten it out, I'm going to be mighty pissed.

That is because for the most part, we are the only ones with walls.

Furthermore, when the Iron curtain/Berlin walls were up, they were universally criticized in the West.

Even China, Libya, Iraq, Syria, Albania, and Zimbabwe, do not have large scale functioning border walls. (The Great Wall, is more a tourist attraction than border wall).

“walls?”

We don’t have any walls on our American borders.

“Furthermore, when the Iron curtain/Berlin walls were up, they were universally criticized in the West?”

Excuse me, but the Berlin wall was constructed to keep people from leaving...HUGE difference!

Rush played a tape the other day where McCain stated clearly...."The borders are secure." I waited for Rush to pick up on that, but he didn't.

It could be the sentence was taken out of context, but Rush generally doesn't do that.

At any rate, "securing the borders" is typical soothing politicians' bilge. The construction of barriers of all types across the entire affected southern border are projected to take till 2013 to be complete.

I would have preferred to hear McLame say that the immediate remedy to illegal immigration is enforced sanctions against employers....and this would be not only be faster, but a heck of a lot cheaper also. The problem would clear up mighty quick. No borders are entirely secure, not in this country, at least.

But no one ever asks McCain this follow-up question and he never addresses it himself. Why not? Because few to no politicos dare go up against the national chambers of commerce in concert with those employing unpapered invaders, namely corporations, large companies and various medium and small businesses.

Damn, we are so doomed!

"Furthermore, when the Iron curtain/Berlin walls were up, they were universally criticized in the West."

Do you know the reason that the Berlin Wall was erected? Do you know why the Berlin Wall was destroyed?

"(The Great Wall, is more a tourist attraction than border wall)."

Do you know the reason that the Great Wall was constructed? I'm pretty sure that a bustling tourist industry wasn't even remotely considered at the time.

Goodness gracious. [[walks away shaking head]]

That sound bite was from McCain's speech which was a 'fast-forward' to what he hopes to be able to say in 2013. McCain also stated that the war in Iraq had been won and our soldiers were home.
