Chelsea Clinton Leaves Puerto Rico Without Making Statements to the Local Press
El Vocero de Puerto Rico (Spanish-language article) ^ | May 16, 2008 | Maricarmen Rivera Sánchez

(English-language translation)

Chelsea Clinton ended her second visit to Puerto Rico yesterday without answering a single question from the Puerto Rican press that followed her to several activities for two days, including a brief visit to Casa Cuna Center in San Juan.

Bill and Hillary Clinton's only child started her day yesterday at Sor Isolina Ferré Center in Ponce. She then visited La Fondita de Jesús [soup kitchen], where, accompanied by the press, she arrived during lunchtime when homeless frequent the place to get lunch. She served food while being photographed.

Chelsea's last stop was Casa Cuna, a shelter run by the Municipality [of San Juan] which takes care of eight minors who were removed from their homes due to abuse.

The visit was carefully coreographed by [Chelsea's] escorts. An unidentified woman told the press in English where to stand so as not to get in the young woman's way. At times, when photographers and reporters did not follow her instructions, she would whistle in order to get their attention.

Chelsea made a brief tour of the facility accompanied by Enid Galván, Director of Women's Integral Development at the Municipality of San Juan. After a wait lasting several seconds, Chelsea appeared in the play area with a baby in her arms and sat down to play with two other girls who were coloring on a table.

She later posed for photographs with the employees before leaving, once more without speaking to the island's press.

This is Chelsea's second visit to the island as part of her mother's primary campaign. Clinton and Barack Obama are engaged in an intense primary for the Democratic presidential nomination. The local primary is scheduled for June 1.

Both campaigns have centered this week on the island, including Obama's wife Michelle who was here and who met yesterday with Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá.

Just as during her previous visit, Chelsea was closely followed by [Puerto Rico] Democratic Party Chairman Roberto Prats; Senate President Kenneth McClintock; and superdelegate and Director of the Capitol's Office of Legislative Services Francisco Doménech.

Prats defended Clinton for not answering questions from the press and said that she has spoken to people she has visited.

"I believe the contrasts with Obama's campaign are quite marked. What Chelsea has asked for is direct contact with the people. I know Michelle has granted interviews, but Hillary has also granted interviews on television and will make statements when she comes; she will address the press," Pratts said. "I don't think Michelle has said anything other than what already has been said."

For his part, McClintock said Clinton wanted to see "the real Puerto Rico", for which places such as Vieques, universities, and shelters were included in her schedule.

"Chelsea asked to see the real Puerto Rico. She wanted to see how we handle social problems," McClintock indicated. "This was in order to be in touch with Puerto Rico's social problems."

I suspect the reason we don’t hear much from Chelsea is that she’s dumber than a sack of hammers.

She doesn’t have to answer any questions - she’s royalty - she’s a Clinton - she’s entitled - she’s above all that.

Puerto Rico was much better off when we had a base there. And it was Clinton who pushed the envelope...So now it’s USA tax dollars....with no return. Time to disavow Puerto Rico.

Hey, if she doesn’t want to talk to the press she doesn’t HAVE to talk to the press.

Hey what else is she gonna do. She should not be expected to actually “work” forever for what her mother terms the evil wall stret barons. and apparenly she does not want to the Monica options such as the U.N. or Revlon. Time to kick back with a life on the public dole like her parents. Congress is a good holding ground. Low expectations.

Smarter than Michelle Obama, apparently. At least Chelsea had the brains not to get photographed next to the indicted-for-corruption governor of P.R.
