Scandal-plagued Ohio attorney general resigns (another Democrat)

Ohio's attorney general resigned Wednesday under threat of impeachment because of a sexual harassment investigation in his office and his extramarital affair. Attorney General Marc Dann, a Democrat elected in 2006 on an anti-corruption platform, said at a news conference that he had to resign to preserve the ability of the office to carry out the priorities he established.

"It is now clear to me that the only way to protect these priorities for the office of attorney general and for the people of Ohio is to remove myself from the situation," said Dann, 46, in Gov. Ted Strickland's ceremonial Statehouse room.

He admitted May 2 to an extramarital affair with an employee that he said contributed to an atmosphere leading to sexual harassment claims against a top aide.

Some reaction Wednesday to Democrat Marc Dann’s resignation as Ohio attorney general:

“The only thing Marc Dann did right as attorney general is resign.”
-Bob Bennett, chairman, Ohio Republican Party.

“He did the right thing for him and his family by stepping down. I believe he is taking accountability for his conduct.”
-Democratic House Minority Leader Joyce Beatty.

“Marc Dann did the right thing.”
-Republican Senate President Bill Harris.

“It is appropriate for us all to acknowledge the personal pain and anguish that these events have caused the Attorney General, his family members, his staff and others.”
-Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat.

“He is left standing alone and that’s all a matter of his judgment in waiting so long. He didn’t gain anything by waiting this long and he lost - it looks almost like - everything.”
-Former Attorney General Betty Montgomery, a Republican.

“His resignation is long overdue.”
-Republican House Speaker Jon Husted.

“It’s been a challenging week, but we can overcome this.”
-Chris Redfern, chairman, Ohio Democratic Party.

“We are glad Marc Dann did the right thing today and removed himself from office. He saw that Democrats in the Ohio House were serious about our promise to pursue an impeachment process to remove him if he remained.”
-House Democratic Reps. Dan Dodd, Jennifer Garrison and Mark Okey, appointed by House Democratic leaders to draft articles of impeachment against Dann.

“He had absolutely no credibility in his position. At least now, he can move forward with his life.”
-Rex Elliott, the attorney who represented two 26-year-old junior staffers whose sexual harassment complaints against a Dann aide launched events leading to the resignation.

“While I believe that Attorney General Dann made a wise decision, it is disappointing that the problems revealed in his office in the past few weeks have overshadowed the work Marc did in consumer protection, environmental protection and other areas of the law.”
-Democratic Senate Minority Leader Ray Miller.

Hmm, I have a tiny amount of respect. Normally Democrats hang onto office for dear life claiming to be gay-Americans or some shite like that. Not this time.

Ohio House Democrats today filed articles of impeachment against Attorney General Marc Dann accusing him of misconduct and malfeasance in office. ‘‘We have identified a pattern of misconduct that we believe rises to the level of impeachable offenses,’’ Democratic state Reps. Dan Dodd of Hebron, Jennifer Garrison of Marietta and Mark Okey of Carrollton said in a joint statement.
The nine charges against Dann based on sworn deposition testimony from the Attorney General’s internal investigation (Espy Report) and other statements. The articles include:

— Malfeasance and improper exercise of authority: Obstructed the investigation into allegations of sexual harassment within his office;

— Malfeasance: Willfully and intentionally issued misleading statements under oath;

— Nonfeasance and Gross Neglect of Duty: Neglected to perform the official duties of his office and, by his own admission, was not competent or qualified to execute the duties of the office of Attorney General;

— Nonfeasance and Neglect: Failed to exercise due care in the administration of the office because he knew or should have known his personal conduct contributed to and allowed the creation of a hostile work environment;

— Nonfeasance and Neglect: Failed to exercise due care to ensure the safety and security of state property;

— Nonfeasance and Neglect: Failed to investigate and prohibit improper use of state property;

— Nonfeasance and Neglect: Knew or should have known of the misuse of state property for personal business;

— Gross Neglect of Duty: Committed acts of gross neglect of duty by undermining the integrity of his office; bringing disrepute upon the office; betraying the public trust as Ohio’s chief law enforcement officer; undermining the effectiveness and efficiency of the office;

— Gross Immorality: Committed acts of gross immorality and knew or should have known that his personal conduct undermined the effectiveness and efficiency of the office.

The three representatives who drafted the articles said, ‘‘We promised the people of Ohio to end a culture of corruption that existed in the past, and we are fulfilling that promise by cleaning our own house when events and circumstances warrant.’’

The Dems filed the impeachment papers for one reason, to save their own jobs. It had nothing to do with ethics, malfeasance, misfeasance or anything else.

Just having flash backs to the Bill Clinton-Monica Scandal and the great defense of Bill Clinton by Democrats...

While the media likes to try and make it sound like it's all about them having affairs, Spitzer had to resign because he was laundering money.

Dann is being investigated by the FBI for telling members of the gambling industry he would go easier on them if they helped him getting elected. Most of his other crimes involved covering up for his cronies and generally acting like he and his cronies were above the law.

The affairs are merely one symptom of their moral bankruptcy.

However, since many of the Republicans who had been in office before this batch of Dems were not much better, I think we've got a ways to go in Ohio before we make a serious dent in the corrupt, elitist politicians in Ohio politics.

It is really hard to find good people to run for Office, it is hard to sacrifice good people to the swine that live in the political system.

When you do get good people, such as Ken Blackwell, they get attacked and smeared. They get little to know support from their own party, and in Blackwells case, MoveOn.org spent millions of dollars attacking him for daring to uphold our election laws in the 2004 election.
