WASHINGTON - President Bush said Tuesday he was disappointed in "flawed intelligence" before the Iraq war and was concerned that if a Democrat wins the presidency in November and withdrew troops prematurely it could "eventually lead to another attack on the United States.
In an interview with Politico magazine and Yahoo News, Bush also said he gave up golf in 2003 out of respect for U.S. soldiers killed in the war, which has now lasted more than five years.
"I didn't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf," he said. "I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."

If Obama becomes president, let’s hope he gives up bowling.
Comes off poorly to me. What a guy. He gave up golf? Really donned the old hairshirt. How does he handle it without golf? Did he give up sport fishing? It’s just dumb, and anyway a president deserves to do what it takes to make him perform at his best. Dumb. Par for the course, really.
He ain't perfect but he takes the gig seriously.
Unlike his narcissist predecessor.
Daily Show and Colbert would have field day with the GOLF comment.
Spot on!
Yeah Bush is all worried about another attack on the US.
I guess that’s why his administration is DOING NOTHING about sealing off the porous southern border.
And giving the Afghanistan War a low priority. Anybody remember Afghanistan? Y’know, the ROOT CAUSE of 9-11? Because apparently Bush can only remember every Sept. 11th, when he trots out the “we’re gonna get ‘em” speech once again.
Blah, blah, blah.
We are all big boys, and know the rules of the game before we sign up.
The fact that our CIC doesn't feel comfortable playing golf while our guys are teeing it up in the streets of Iraq, tells you a lot about him as man. I know that it may seem like a stupid gesture, but I appreciate it, and I appreciate the fact that he is thinking about the families of these guys.
I think it is safe to say that we all have our issues with this president, but I am proud to say that he was my boss.
JMHO...
Semper Fi,
NYleatherneck
Its nice to know that Our canuck friends dont think Our President hasn’t protected us from Terror attacks and mocks him about worrying about future attacks. Look at all of the attacks under Clintoon and taunts from OBL to Clintoon . GOD BLESS Our Great President George W. Bush! British Columbia is a Utopian Dreamland and very Beautiful,
All I want is one simple question answered:
if national security is all-important, why does Bush do nothing about the open southern border? Does he think terrorists are too stupid, or too naive, or too polite to cross into the US that way?
Do you?
Why the constant disconnect between words and deeds??
Hard to tell which disappointed him more - the crummy intel or giving up golf.
“Bush also said he gave up golf in 2003 out of respect for U.S. soldiers killed in the war...”
Okay. That’s it. I give up. I hate to do it, but I agree with the disgusting RATS.
Bush IS an idiot.
FYI: Mike Allen asked President Bush why he had stopped golfing; President Bush’s comment was a direct response to this question.
[If you weren’t BDS sufferers, you would have investigated the genesis of the comment yourselves!]
Do some research; your ignorance in showing! [Some of us here at FR still understand the difference between empty (albeit incendiary) rhetoric and empirical evidence . . . grow up!]
No way!
Refer to my comment at #14. [BTW: Only an “idiot” would make an assessment like yours without reviewing the FACTS (and in this case, the video)!]
I’m not a BDS sufferer. And just because someone asks a question doesn’t make a dumb answer less dumb.
Did you actually take the time to watch the videoclip — I didn’t think so.
this thread is exactly why so many people have left this site....hope you all are really happy when obama as president just says there are no borders, then you’ll be happy won’t ya? mccain isn’t good enough, bush isn’t good enough...just who do you want? a dictator?
Poor guy had to give up golf, awww. Does he have a flat-caddie to keep him company?
Thank you for your stated simple question. I worry much more about Our Northern border with Our Utopian Neighbors who let anyone into their country from anywhere. I will not go thru the litany of the numerous acts of Terror perperated on our Nation umder the Clintoon’s 8 years and the taunts by OBL to Clintoon as to what he had to do to convince the Toon that they were at WAR! At any rate, You should praise GOD for Our President who does a great job of protecting You Canucks as well!! Cherrio..
Come on down to the southern border and I will get you a gun and you can go looking for terrorists... but if I was one of them and I thought there was half a chance that you might shoot me or the border patrol might stop me I would get a boat and head into the US the easy way (there is enough coastline to allow me to pick any number of places to come in)
Ok, so we can all forget about the southern border then - Bush’s magic Anti-Terrorist rays simply will stop any threats before they can get across.
Whew, that’s a relief, knowing nothing needs to be done about it - because that’s about the sum total of what IS happening down there.
Enjoy your simple questions! you are most probably alone with them. Good night and enjoy the frozen tundra up there.
By the way, have you seen any camels and their jockeys up there recently who may have slipped thru Our southerm borders and continued thru Our well protected Northern Borders?
Eisenhower never gave up golf. He wasn’t given to trite symbolism.
They probably want a President who will honor his oath of office by enforcing our laws. Including protecting the border and deporting illegals already here.
Too bad we don’t have one who takes his oath seriously.
I encourage you to try them again, Mr. President. Their new quad core processors are pretty peppy.
As more time passes with Bush, he becomes a bigger disappointment and sounds more and more like tiny tommie daschle.
“Does he think terrorists are too stupid, or too naive, or too polite to cross into the US that way?”
Why would a Canadian care about our southern boarder? Why haven’t we had a terrorist attack since 9/11? Have we intercepted any middle-eastern terrorists attempting to use Mexico to enter the U.S.? What provisions has the Mexican government taken (both overt and covert) to prevent this? Do any of your posts not relate to hijacking threads using the immigration issue in an effort to bash Bush?
“deporting illegals already here.”
Well then, going onto the internet and hurling childish personal attacks against our CiC in a time of war is certainly the best strategy I can think of./s
Gosh, what pleasure I am enjoing by simply choosing not to break your loosing streak! Gosh, that is so Fantastic!
If facts upset you that much you better stick to your world of fantasy.
“Why would a Canadian care about our southern boarder?”
Evidently he us more concerned about American security and its “boarders” than some of the koolaid drinkers who live here.
I’ll toast a Moosehead to you, c_c.
He got results too.
Ike sure did. He had backbone, something sadly lacking in this current crop of GOP leaders. I doubt that a single one of them would even say the name of Eisenhower’s program for removing illegals - Operation Wetback. If Bush or McCain ever mentioned it it would be to apologize and grovel for 10 minutes over the Insensitivity of President Eisenhower.
I went and read the full article; it’s a checklist summation of items clipped from what had to be a full interview. The “golf” comment was the smallest among the importance of comments; but of course, it had to just be brought up IMMEDIATELY after the lede.
Yes, the press would have turned a physical activity, golf, into a bash-Bush fashion plate.
I'm very fond of our President. Daily, I keep he and family in my prayers. I'm grateful for what he has done and what he has been to my country.
He's tootin' right about intel being so flawed, pre-911.
No matter what comes November, his record as a President who did his job well, stands.
Take it to an immigration thread.
Isn’t that the same guy who opposed the war in Iraq? How do you equate this to caring about American security? How many times have we been hit since 9-11?
Please elaborate. What do you mean when you say ‘my world of fantasy’? Have I said something incorrect, and if so, what?
How wonderful! Did he give up desert, too? How about whoopee with the wifey? Why give up some good things, but not others? What's the point? Live your damn life, and win the damn war.
Not fair, but funny.
And you sound like Carter. Bush is a complete and utter failure because...borders. Southern Border.
What was that you said?
They probably want a President who will honor his oath of office by enforcing our laws. Including protecting the border and deporting illegals already here.
Too bad we dont have one who takes his oath seriously.
“Please elaborate. What do you mean when you say my world of fantasy? Have I said something incorrect, and if so, what?”
I was commenting on this post of yours which appears to be a sign of outrage at having discovered criticism “in a time of war” no less:
“Well then, going onto the internet and hurling childish personal attacks against our CiC in a time of war is certainly the best strategy I can think of./s”
which I assume is motivated by your fealty to your “CiC”. Evidently you think that bringing up Bush’s indifference, if not outright refusal, to enforce immigration law is somehow a ‘childish personal attack’. More likely you simply hero-worship Bush and don’t want to see any criticism of his behavior, factual or not.
‘Incorrect’ wasn’t the issue, fantasy is, though your statement does have error - “our CiC”. Presidents are the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, not of the American citizenry. The US isn’t an armed camp like Sparta. I’m not in the military, I have no commander, whether chief or inferior. And unless you’re in the service Bush isn’t your CiC either, no matter how much you might idolize the man.
And you sound like you’re drunk or else too stupid to read with comprehension. Have another one for the road, dimwit.
“Isnt that the same guy who opposed the war in Iraq?”
Who do you mean by “that”? Pronouns function better with nouns as references.
Obviously, it works so well for Michael Moore, you figure it must work swell for you too.
I guess thats why his administration is DOING NOTHING about sealing off the porous southern border.Nothing? Really? And how many attacks have we had since 911? Nothing? Are you really that out of touch?
