University of Toledo official fired over column

The University of Toledo confirmed yesterday that an administrator who wrote a column critical of gay rights for a local publication has been fired.

Crystal Dixon, associate vice president for human resources, was terminated on Thursday following about a week on paid administrative leave and a predisciplinary meeting May 5.

Ms. Dixon wrote a guest column last month for the Toledo Free Press titled "Gay rights and wrongs: another perspective," expressing her opinion that being gay is a choice that has consequences, according to her religious beliefs.

Ms. Dixon is apparently considering a lawsuit against the university relating to her termination. Certainly, Ms. Dixon is entitled to her opinion, however misinformed it may be. But it would seem that the university, which is a public institution, is equally entitled to have individuals in its personnel department who will uphold its nondiscrimination policies and not publicly undermine its ability to recruit employees—both gay and straight.

There is no more insular and unforgiving place than the University and College system in our country. Conservatives need not apply. Yeah, I suspect she isn’t conservative anyway but she’s being treated like one.

Excuse me, she has not discriminated against anyone. She has stated her opinion. There is NO evidence of discrimination. Being black, she should understand discrimination. The university should be a place for the free exchange of ideas and opinions and no one should be afraid to offer their opinions. Gays certainly offer their’s, so why shouldn’t those of different views have the same privilege. I say she should sue the university. This kind of gestapo tactics flies in the face of individual freedoms to express yourself and your views without fear of retribution.
