Pelosi: President Should Push OPEC for Increased Production, Abandon His ‘Drill and Veto’ Policies

Press Releases Contact: Brendan Daly/Nadeam Elshami 202-226-7616 For Immediate Release 05/13/2008 Pelosi: President Should Push OPEC for Increased Production, Abandon His ‘Drill and Veto’ Policies

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement prior to President Bush departing today on a five-day trip to the Middle East, including a stop in Saudi Arabia on Friday:

"The White House has indicated that President Bush will push Saudi officials for OPEC to increase production in an effort to bring down prices for American consumers. As the largest oil producer and exporter, Saudi Arabia is uniquely positioned to influence the price at the pump and the President must use his close ties to help consumers who are in desperate need of relief.

“While I hope the President will return with concrete assurances that OPEC will take swift action to bring down prices, in the past the Administration's calls have been ineffective, making it all the more necessary for Congress to step in to help American consumers.

“Today, the House and Senate will take action to temporarily suspend filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, directing the Administration to take action that the President has refused to do. By Memorial Day, the House will act on a new bill that will crack down on possible price fixing by OPEC-controlled entities.

"Two years ago, the President declared in his State of the Union that the United States was 'addicted to oil.' In his seven years in office, the President's energy policies have left us more dependent on foreign sources of oil, and, as costs skyrocket, the President continues to call for increased domestic drilling while threatening to veto any legislation that would provide relief to consumers.

"The President and Congressional Republicans have spent the last seven years doling out billions of dollars in subsidies to the Big Oil companies, instead of working toward energy independence. As gas prices have hit new records all spring, the President has repeatedly rejected Democratic proposals to invest in renewable energy sources, hold OPEC accountable for its cartel-pricing activities, investigate and punish price gougers, temporarily halt filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and repeal the unnecessary subsidies to Big Oil in a time of record profits.

“The President should reverse his ‘drill and veto’ policies and return from his Middle East trip with firm guarantees from OPEC for increased production levels that will decrease the price at the pump for American consumers."

This is so moronic. What you want him to do Nancy? Invade Saudi Arabia? Cause the ONLY way you can force OPEC to do anything is via Military intervention.

How about Nancy you Democrats drop you “Bitch but Do Nothing” strategy you have pushed since the 1970s on Energy and meet the President half way?

Why is it Democrats are so willing to surrender all around the world but then turn around and demand everyone surrender to their wacko extremist dogmas on domestic issues?

Tell you want Nancy, drop your opposition to domestic drilling and we will join in your efforts to “pressure OPEC” into increasing production.

Cause the dirty little secret is IF we massively increase our own domestic Oil production that WILL be effective in pressuring OPEC to produce more to under cut the cost of our production by making Oil cheaper

Yeah, like he’s supposed to get OPEC to do for us what the Demagogues and RINOs won’t let us do for ourselves!! Oh, sure, the OPEC countries always have our best interests at heart, and if we just say pretty please they will crank up the production. What a bad joke you are, Nancy Pelosi.

What I would like to know is how much additional production we might have in North America, RIGHT NOW, if we had made a serious push 10-12 years ago to produce from ANWR and also from offshore sites, etc. Do we even have a real handle on how much oil we are leaving in the ground in order to send more billions overseas to OPEC?

I see the figure of 1 million BPD tossed around for potential ANWR production, but I’ll bet the total from all potential sites (ANWR plus continental shelf, etc.) is probably a lot more (I don’t claim to know). I’m sure we can’t make up all of the huge gap between domestic production and consumption, but could we add more than 1 million BPD?

Have we even seriously explored everything in our own backyard in the past 10-20 years, when producers know they cannot be allowed to drill in so many areas?

So let me get this straight, Madame Speaker....we should go over, lube up and bend over for the sheiks instead of drilling domestically.

All the while, the Dems cry and moan about lowering our dependence on foreign oil.

It would be funny it weren’t so tragic.

High on her Botox -- or its chronically cutting off the blood supply to her brain. But she's a Democrat, so what's new?

Like Rush is saying -- It's insane to beg the Saudis to increase production when we can't be bothered to do it over here in the US.

Can you imagine what these Arabs think of our intelligence. With our government just voting in the Senate to continue the prohibition on drilling for oil in the United States but at the same time demanding that the Arabs drill and produce more oil for our use. It is beyond belief that we have elected morons of this degree throughout our government.

And on top of that we have the so-called U. S. conservative party dominated by these same morons.

Yep the ONLY way to control Oil prices is to be a major producer of oil but not be part of OPEC. Remove us from the market by making us Energy Independent and OPEC suddenly got way more supply then demand and the price drops. They cannot drink it or eat it they got to sell it

If I were a Saudi, I'd ask Pelosi why the United States wants a policy of others depleting their reserves while Americans sit on theirs untapped.

I'd want to know what Americans plan to do for the Saudis once their reserves run out and America is now sitting on the world's main oil supply.

I'd want to know when the Americans plan to contribute to the global supply to meet global demand.

On another note, I remember back when President Clinton released oil from the strategic reserve in advance of the 2000 election to try to help Al Gore. I remember that much of that oil actually went overseas to be sold on the European heating oil market. If we do eventually open up ANWR for drilling, how do we know that that oil will actually go to domestic use and not be sold for higher profits to the Chinese and Indians?

And the really sick thing? EVEN if you do every single thing in the Democrat’s plan, the price of gas will go UP, not down.

"President Bush will push Saudi officials for OPEC to increase production in an effort to bring down prices for American consumers"

These people do not want to lower the prices of oil or increase production. They want to bleed our economy of its money. They know that they cannot win a war of force against us, so they resort to attacking our economy. It is our weakness.

The US has been been the military superpower of the world for the duration of its existence. Even in Vietnam, we were stronger and had the ability to win militarily. So what did the Vietnamese do? They fought us on two fronts: one in the jungle and the other (more tragically) in the hearts and minds of the folks back home.

OPEC is like Vietnamese of our era. They attack us on the one front that we cannot defend as readily.

Reform the stupid Fed EPA regulations that require North Shore oil to be sold overseas because of it's sulfurs content and you will not have to worry about it. This is a problem created, and maintained, because since the 1970s the US Govt has pushed this "Conservation not Consumption" dogma. Fix the regulatory system and the price of gas will come down.

Why such a simple argument can’t (or won’t) be made to the people about this is quite interesting.

If I were the Saudi government I’d be pretty upset that the U.S> was hoarding it’s oil while trying to get other countries to exhaust THEIR supplies.

You have to wonder how much OPEC money is being funneled to domestic PR firms and “Green” activists to keep us wholly depended on Imported Oil.

The Green Lobby groups are the most well funded, effective political influence buying, judicial warfare organization in existence in the EU and the USA. OPEC would be stupid not be be funding them behind the scenes thru third party cut outs. The are the Arabs best political allies.

Reform the stupid Fed EPA regulations that require North Shore oil to be sold overseas

It never was that way. When first built the pipeline oil could not be exported; that was part of the deal to get the pipeline approved through congress. The ban against exporting Alaskan North Slope was lifted in 1996 yet 100% of Alaskan North Slope oil is now kept in America. This has been the case for all but 4 years of the nearly 3 decades of Alaskan oil production. Between 1996-1999 5.5% of North Slope oil was exported to Asian countries. These exports were overwhelmingly supported by the US Congress and by the Clinton Administration to offset an oil glut in California at the time. In June 2000 Alaskan North Slope oil again ceased to be exported, and 100% of Alaskan North Slope production has stayed in America.

You can look at the export history from this area since the ban was lifted.

Exports, US West Coast including Alaska and Hawaii

Here you can see data from the California Energy Commission. They track the amount of oil brought into California from Alaska.

Here you can see from the Washington Government that 74% of the oil used in Washington State refineries comes from Alaska.
