MARGARETVILLE _ Seven second-graders at Margaretville Central School were arrested last week for allegedly plotting an attack on one of their classmates.

The boys aged 7 to 9 were charged by state police as juveniles with fifth-degree conspiracy, a misdemeanor.

A parent of the student allegedly targeted by the children learned about the plot Wednesday and informed school officials Thursday that the child felt threatened, Margaretville Superintendent John Riedl said Monday.

State police in Margaretville were contacted at about 1 p.m. and seven arrests were made by 1:30 p.m., according to troopers.

In a letter sent home to parents the day of the alleged incident, Riedl said the school had become “aware of a situation which involved second graders planning to hurt one of their classmates.”

“Because of the seriousness of this incident, and to protect the privacy of all of our children, we cannot release any details, but we want you to be aware that something has occurred,” Riedl wrote.

The gender of the classmate allegedly targeted by the boys was not identified.

There were two 7-year-olds, four 8-year-olds and one 9-year-old charged in this case.

A State University College at Oneonta professor who specializes in developmental psychology said Monday children that age often do not consider the consequences of their actions.

“A lot of 8-year-olds are thinking fairly primitively,” Cynthia Miller said.

These are the children who will be the adults who one day run this Nation and decide who pulls the plug on my ventilator? When they grow up they'll probably be Democrats and at least one of them will run for Senator of NY.

The situation is not funny at all.

Maybe they suspected he had their lost shaker of salt.

Seriously, this may be way overblown.

I remember one time my fourth grade classmates and I were mad at this kid Tony. We drew up a plan where this one girl Sharon would walk with him and act friendly while we closed in from three different directions and trapped him then kicked his ass. We had maps and diagrams and teams all set up.

BTW, he slipped through some unseen flaw in our plan and was able to run home without getting clobbered.

Maybe we hated him because of his speed. I don't really remember.

Phew, that’s a pretty long stretch of the imagination there.

“Kids are redeemable, especially at the age of 8,” Miller said.

LETS JUST ARREST EVERYBODY....GOOD GRIEF....

call the parents into the school with the child one at a time and inform the parents of the situation...then mom and dad when you get your child home give him the spanking of his life (which he has probably never had before) he will have to eat dinner standing for a week...my guess is he will not be involved in something like this again....

but alas in todays society lets arrest them...take them to court...put them on probation yada yada...slap thier wrists...and hope all will be well....

too funny....long gone are those days....remember when 1 kid would say he was going to beat up another...so the one that was going to be beat up would get his friends and thother kid would find out so he would get his friends...then they all ran into each other and all the friends would form a circle and the 2 would be in the middle to work it out for themselves...kids will be kids....
