Among mysteries: 'Life coach' got $4,500 in Paterson campaign cash (NY Governor)

As a state senator, Gov. Paterson spent $4,500 in campaign money on a woman who bills herself as a "life coach."

Sandra Tate, who calls herself a "life coach" and is sometimes known as "Reclaimurlife Diva," got the money in 2006. Paterson aides said she did campaign work; her Web site version is a little more vague.

Tate's site says she talks with people who are stressed and - for a fee - gets them to "find out what is holding you back."

She describes her sessions like this: "You will get cozy and comfortable, perhaps with a cup of coffee or tea. Then you will call the life coach. If the meeting is in person, well, then you can share your coffee or tea!"

The Tate expense was one of several whose purpose was difficult to discern.

For example:

- Paterson twice hired his then-girlfriend, Lila Kirton, who got more from the campaign than Paterson originally revealed. Records show Kirton had the power to write campaign checks.

- Three days before Christmas 2003, the Paterson campaign gave a woman named Evelyn McCall a $2,000 loan "to be repaid," records show. There is no indication the loan was repaid.

- Since the 1990s, Paterson has received a handful of illegal donations totaling about $3,000 from nonprofit groups, some of whom he gave taxpayer money.

“If the meeting is in person, well, then you can share your coffee or tea!”

“Coffee, tea, or me?”

Not a thing. Liz posts a lot of information about the goings on in NY politics. I find them interesting/disturbing being from Michigan. I don’t know whose politicians/criminals are worse.

Can you say government fraud? Patterson was clearly laundering and illegally converting tax dollars into the pockets of crooks posing as do-gooders.....he probably got a cut in kickbacks.

This scam is connected to a widening federal probe which orginated in NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn's office. Some $200 million (state lawmakers' earmarked special projects) was parked in her office and hidden. The monies were later given out to shady or non-existent projects that appeared to be kickbacks into the pockets of the lawmakers.

The city Department of Investigation has hauled off the records of 100 nonprofit agencies at the Department of Youth that were funded through City Council's discretionary grants, The Post has learned. Investigators have also collected the records of six council members who made some of the funding recommendations, according to one source. It's not clear if the legislators were targeted because they were mentioned in newspaper accounts that questioned certain disbursements or because of independent information developed by DOI. Both DOI and the youth agency declined comment. The source identified the council members as Maria Baez (D-Bronx), Larry Seabrook (D-Bronx), Erik Dilan (D-Brooklyn), Hiram Monserrate (D-Queens), Charles Barron (D-Brooklyn) and Al Vann (D-Brooklyn). All but Barron and Vann have been the subjects of stories that found connections between the nonprofits that received grants and the council member who made them.

BACKSTORIES--NY POST April 27, 2008

BACKSTORY

Gloria Jones-Grant says she helps theBay Eden Senior Center — but they never heard of her or the foundation that sought city cash....Jones-Grant controls three nonprofits amid a federal probe of City Council slush money claims she provides vital services for a senior center.....The problem is, the senior center says it has never had any contact with her. Jones-Grant, executive director of the New York Mercy Foundation (at a $71,000 salary), told The Post that NYC Councilman Larry Seabrook (D-Bronx) attempted to obtain $8,187 for her work at Bay Eden Senior Center.

Seabrook's involvement comes after news reports that the city has frozen nearly $1 million Seabrook sought for an obscure nonprofit conveniently located across the hall from his own office.

Jones-Grant insisted "We bring in professional doctors because we want to address health issues that affect African-Americans," said the self-described social worker. "I've never heard of them," said Judith Richburg, executive director of the Bay Eden Senior Center.

Councilman Seabrook also sought to channel $65,000 to the Civic Hall of Fame as a discretionary "member item" last year then amended the amount to $10,000 for unspecified youth services.

As mentioned above, the Patterson scam is connected to the widening federal probe of NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn's office. Some $200 million (state lawmakers' earmarked special projects) was parked in her office and hidden. The monies were later given out to shady or non-existent projects that appeared to be kickbacks into the pockets of the lawmakers.

Latino Councilman Erik Dilan (his father is state Senator Martin Malave-Dilan D-Brooklyn) allocated nearly $200,000 to the North Brooklyn Community Council, a nonprofit run by his wife, Jannitza Luna.

The largest allocation was nearly $600,000 to the Ridgewood-Bushwick Senior Citizens Council, a well-respected organization founded by powerhouse Brooklyn Assemblyman Vito Lopez, chairman of the Brooklyn Democratic Party. The member item was sponsored by "the Brooklyn delegation."

=========================================

NY POST April 27, 2008 -- A Bronx City Councilwoman earmarked thousands of taxpayer dollars for a tenants association in her former apartment building - an association residents say doesn't exist. Councilwoman Maria Baez, a Democrat representing the Fordham and Kingsbridge sections, allocated $7,500 of her Fiscal Year 2008 discretionary funds to the 2401 Davidson Avenue Tenants Association, a group supposedly located in the six-story building she called home until 2005.

The building is also the registered headquarters for her campaign committee, "Friends of Maria Baez," and home to her campaign treasurer, Nilda Velazquez, who lives in Baez's former apartment. But the building's superintendent and more than a dozen residents interviewed at the 60-unit building said there is no tenants association. "There's no association here," said Elias Guerra, the super. The regular postal carrier said she couldn't remember ever delivering a piece of mail to any tenants organization in the building.

Staffers at Baez's Bronx district office told a Post reporter, "You're not welcome here." Baez accused The Post of harassing her staff members, and said she only allowed constituent business to be conducted in her office. She declined to answer specific questions about the tenants group. "I will not allow anyone to assassinate my character as a Latina woman," she said. She added that the organizations she funds are "good organizations" that "provide important services for the community."
