Some people think that the reason the public misunderstands so many issues is that these issues are too "complex" for most voters. But is that really so?
With all the commotion in the media and in politics about the high price of gasoline, is there really some terribly complex explanation?
Is there anything complex about the fact that with two countries-- India and China-- having rapid economic growth, and with combined populations 8 times that of the United States, they are creating an increased demand for the world's oil supply?
The problem is not that supply and demand is such a complex explanation. The problem is that supply and demand is not an emotionally satisfying explanation. For that, you need melodrama, heroes and villains.

The only way to realisticlly reduce gas prices is to reduce consumption.

I’ll let “thackney” respond...that is more of his expertise than mine.
I almost always agree with Sowell, but on this score I tend to think he’s making the same mistake that many journalists have made. Oil production and demand certainly account for a great deal of the increased price of oil, but the biggest culprit right now is the collapse of the dollar. Oil is typically purchased on a futures market; for about a year now everyone has been buying up oil futures as a hedge against the dollar’s precipitous decline. It’s “black gold” in more than a purely descriptive sense—it’s acting like gold (as are other commodities) and has shot up in value as the dollar has fallen. The increase in oil futures has not been terrifically worse than the increase in many other commodities.
An increase in supply would be a hedge against potential oil shortages as China and India increase demand, but as long as there is rampant speculation in oil and the dollar keeps falling, increased production will not lead to lower prices long term. The only correction that could be made on the supply-demand side of the equation is an economic downturn in India or China. Their demand easily outstrips whatever nominal increase in production US drilling could gain. I personally don’t see the long-term value in potentially destroying national treasures like ANWR just to cut $.20 per gallon (at best) off the price of gas for a couple years.

Do you have any idea what the Coastal Plain of ANWR (the only place discussed for exploration) even looks like? It is so barren that tours North of the Brooks range sometime give warning that over a week no wildlife might be seen.

Pictures like this are of ANWR, but the are NOT the coastal plain. ANILCA clearly designates this a permanent wilderness.
The Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) , finalized in December of 1980, designated the 1.5 million acre Coastal Plain within ANWR a study area, to be evaluated for its oil and gas development potential. The resource evaluation, conducted by the Department of Interior, was released in 1987 and recommended that Congress open the Coastal Plain for oil and gas exploration and development.
If this will not be done, then the rest of the ANILCA should also be recinded removing the nearly 80 million acres set aside.
Don’t disagree in principle, but increased US production would have a nominal impact on pricing and would actually be a disincentive for OPEC to increase production, nullifying any potential benefit to consumers. It is also very unlikely for US production to have any impact at all for several years since they cannot simply turn on a switch and start production. My feeling is that OPEC is deliberately keeping production down because they know that their main reserves in Saudi Arabia may have as little as a 40 years lifespan left and they’re trying to stretch that out.
Not true. Oil is not 10 times what it cost in 1999. I don’t recall spending $.40 for a gallon of gas then and I don’t believe sweet crude cost $12 per barrel. The rate of inflation has been far greater than 28%; the dollar has fallen nearly 5% v. commodities each month for the past 9 months.

I don’t have time to do your research for you.
It’s untouched, barren aspect is precisely why the coastal plain should be conserved as a national treasure. The fact that wildlife is not immediately visible is irrelevant (and misleading). This is one of the last places on earth that has been left undisturbed. It would be a great tragedy for the US to start drilling when the benefit would be so minor. If we were in a true crisis, then I could see some extremely limited exploration; but this is not a great crisis by any means.
B.S. There is over 100 million acres set aside in Alaska alone.
We are in a crude oil price bubble driven by speculation. Forecasting the market is a fool’s game, so I won’t try to do so,but the bubble will burst.

Why should a barren stretch of land be considered a "treasure?"
But the increase in OPEC Production is the fear that high oil prices would lead to a worldwide recession, killing the goose.
This is a demand driven price increase. India and China are still growing, the rest of Asia is still growing, adding cheaper fuel will only make them use more.

Do you know where they would be drilling? It’s a barren sheet of ice. I doubt there are very few of us who even know anyone who has been there our would want to go see this national treasure.

Because of the increased drilling and investments in expansion already happening, the US is already predicted to slightly grow in production rates.

It's a barren, frigid wasteland and there are resources there we need. The physical footprint of the development would be miniscule.

Your rational is to keep all the pretty silver coins while the kids starve. It’s ridiculous.
And you may not be in crisis mode, because your priorites are so messed but I am. Food prices are going through the roof, gas is unbelievalbe and you want to keep some wilderness.

Also, a refinery will take up no more than 2000 acres out of the 19 million acre refuge. That's minuscule. Democrats have been against drilling in ANWR since before it became a national refuge. It's the only reason it is a national refuge.
Just part of the Democrat's long term strategy to drive up the price of oil and create animosity towards oil companies, capitalists and Republicans.
And it works.

But that would mean either increasing taxes or decreasing spending - And both of those options the GOP will never consider.
Roads and airstrips will be made of ice.
Neither of those options would have any effect on the dollar.
Raising interest rates might.
Returning to the gold standard definitely would.
Forcing Iran to rescind their decision to refuse dollars for their oil would quickly put an end to the lack of demand for dollars.

Whether or not a wasteland like the desired area of ANWR can be called a "national treasure," I'll leave to other FReepers to debate. But remember two things:
(1) The oil industry has advanced a lot since the last domestic well was sunk. The oil companies use directional drilling, greatly reducing the footprint (pardon the pun) of the equipment needed to bring oil to the surface. Today's oil tech is much less intrusive than that of a couple decades past.
(2) The so-called destruction of ANWR involves just over THREE SQUARE MILES. That's it. Take a look at this:
The decline in the dollar didn’t happen because of Iran, it happened because the Bush Administration and their rubber stamp congress were fiscally irresponsible. They flooded the market with US Dollars turning their value worthless.
The run up of inflation for consumer goods is the “Bush Tax.”
Adding production from ANWAR and the offshore continental shelf could add 1 to 2 million barrels per day to world production, or 1.2% to 2.4%. This would have a significant effect on oil prices probably dropping them to as low as $60 to $70 per barrel. Oil prices were between $10 and $20 per barrel for 20 years when capacity exceeded demand by only 4% to 5%. Oil prices escalate rapidly whenever demand starts to get around 98% of capacity and above due to the unstable foreign sources of supply and the relative inelasticity of demand. Adding U.S. sources of supply would also add high paying jobs to the U.S. instead of overseas, reduce our trade deficit, and likely strengthen the dollar (though foreign curriencies are more buffeted by interest rate differentials and inflation concerns than most other factors).
OPEC will have a very hard time reducing supply as all of them except for Saudi Arabia need the cash currently. The Saudis will not likely want to cut production either as that will disrupt their refineries and chemical plants.
One other thing people tend to forget is that a significant protion of your natural gas is from oil fields as it is dissolved in the oil and many times is found as a gas cap on top of the field. Natural gas is not only needed for enery but is the basis for most of our fertilizer.
Having worked at Prudhoe Bay I can tell you this, oil production has had minimal effect on the area. One is that the footprint is so small as you have isolated well pads connected by a small road with pipes taking production to a processing center. No one goes outside unless they absolutely have to since the weather is so miserably cold (even in August you might get some weather that aproaches 60 degrees but you can also get blowing snow). The land is tundra and all looks the same (flat and boggy). Depending upon the time of year you get animals migating through there with no problems since they know the natives will rarely hunt them these days. If you ask me I believe a solar plant in the Arizona desert has a much worse impact on the environment than ANWAR will as solar plants drastically alter the surface area habitat.
As far as offshore production, drilling ships don’t look much different than other ships, and most of your production will be from subsea wellheads so you won’t even likely need any unsightly platforms.Most people won’t even know there is oil and gas prodution going on unless they’re told.
It's possible. But Iran's actions have killed demand for the dollar, couple that with your 'oversupply' and you've got a dollar crash.
