New London (WTNH) _ It may sound a little hard to believe, but the nation's foreclosure crisis is even affecting pets. More and more owners have no choice but to give away their animals.
It's not every day an animal shelter gets 44 finches and parakeets. But in these tight times, Ledyard Animal Control has seen a lot more than the usual dogs and cats come in. Animals have been given up by owners evicted from their apartment.
"They will give up food for themselves, they'll give up electricity for themselves, they'll do anything for their animals to be safe and they get here and it's a last resort," Kamlyn Marshall, Ledyard Animal Control Officer, said.
It's not only food feeding the financial hardship. One animal's owners turned to the Connecticut Humane Society when they discovered a tumor on their pet's leg.
"Unfortunately the owners could not afford to care for her with the surgery," Alicia Wright, of Connecticut Humane Society, said. "They had her for her entire life."
Toby the pig came into the Waterford Shelter because his owner was facing foreclosure.
Even though Toby weighs 300 pounds, he is not a farm animal; he is a house pet. He's house broken and loves pretzels. It's just another longtime pet, now in need of a new home.
"Previously the people would have no difficulty but because of everything tightening, very, very good pet owners are having to make the sad decisions," Wright noted.
Financial hardships and heart break. "To watch the children come in. They're losing their best friend," Marshall said.
The Connecticut Humane Society estimates five percent of animals brought in over the past few months have been because of financial hardship. Those at the Ledyard Animal Shelter say for them it's even higher.
Ah, yes.....the children.

I will adopt Toby, but first I need to call the meat locker about processing.
LOL..dude!
Jeez, just when I thoght foreclosure sob stories had hit rock bottom, along comes this gem.
5 percent? Wow, a national crisis! Stop the presses, we have a huge story!
While I was dropping my two hounds off for grooming yesterday morning at the vet, I watched as a family came in with their obviously very old and ill dog. The 10-ish little girl had a blanket wrapped around her and had obviously been up crying all night. I knew why they were there, and I felt their pain.
Saw that here recently. The sorry SOBs brought the dog to the park tied him the fence and left. Of course, no one noticed until all the games were over and here was this poor animal. My friend took him home and found a home for him. He was well cared for, just abandoned though.
Man, how can you not? We're going through that now with an old cat that sat by my wifes side through 2 bouts of cancer. He knew, and he absolutely never left her side.
I am not looking forward to that sad day that's, unfortunately, not to far off.
Women, minorities, and farm animals hardest hit!
I will adopt Toby, but first I need to call the meat locker about processing.
That's what I like to read, somebody that leaves no doubt that he is a complete a$$hole.
If God hadn’t meant for man to eat animals, He wouldn’t have made them out of meat.
I am not looking forward to that sad day that's, unfortunately, not to far off.
Been through it a few times, unfortunately, you never really get over it.
Typical comeback line. Hope your colonoscopy goes well.
It was clean as a whistle! Thanks for asking!
If you can barely afford to pay for your house, shouldn’t you get rid of your pet? I have people who work for me who want to borrow money to buy pet food. If you have to borrow money to buy pet food, get rid of the pet.

Showed up on our property two weekends ago and we haven't been able to find any owner and we are still looking for someone to adopt him. But I have a hunch that we may have just evened out our dog to cat ratio to an even three of each.
And what did the doctor say about your being overweight?
It’s interesting you say that about your cat.
I had a cat once, a foster cat that got left at my house and the owners never came back to get her.
I was in a bad accident and when I came home from the hospital she completely uncharacteristically jumped up next to be in the bed and stayed there. She had never done that before. When she thought I had fallen asleep she got up and sniffed the entire length of my leg which was in an ‘open’ cast. Then she settled down on the other side of me. She stayed there for weeks, getting up only to eat and use the litter box.
Remember the story about the cat in the nursing home who would jump in bed with patients who were going to die?
I certainly do. There's so much we don't know about animals. It's really amazing.
He didn’t say anything. I’m 5’9” and 179lbs with 14% body fat.
What a beautiful dog — you are so lucky — and so is Potato!
“And what did the doctor say about your being overweight?”
Dude. You should try being half as nice to people as you are to pigs. Now get over your bad self.
Dude, the difference between animals and humans is that humans always bite the hand that feeds them. This is not about the way I treat humans it is about the way humans treat animals, dude. Please go back to where you came from.
And Potato quickly made friends with our other dogs, including Rocky:
That is always so heartbreaking to see. We had to have our 13 1/2 year old mixed terrier put down last June. She had kidney failure (we think bad canned dog food) and she was in pain. My husband and I were going to take her...but our middle son (a big strapping 18 year old) said he would in go in my place w/his dad (I couldn’t do it—I still miss her). My son had to wear his sunglasses for the next day or so...told his friends it was from ‘allergies.’
What a beautiful picture...Potato is so lucky to have found you!!!
Dude, I don’t want to go back to where I came from. I’d need to get a Visa and all, and like the country doesn’t even exist anymore.
But, it is about how you treat other humans. You are plainly rude, and your Momma should have taught you better. And, unless you are a tofu-burping, naked PETAsswipe, you are also a hypocrite.
I understand the bonds with a pet, but I also hunt and use animal byproducts. Such is the dichotomy of life.
Mmmmm(enjoying a ham sandwich).
Being that you decided to stick your 1/2” in, I stand by my guns, consider using animals for food murder, do not stand by PETA (go ahead and give us the stupid ass acronym) and have a number of great recipes for Tofu. I treat humans by how I’ve been treated by them and do not care who I offend just as you (hopefully are chocking on your ham sandwich) do not care who you offend in your obvious, hypocritical ignorance.
1/2” is all you’re worth. At least now it’s clear why you went whacko on a guy who just made a joke. You could have just told him you don’t believe animals should be used that way. Instead, you made baseless insults to someone you don’t know. Internet insults are worth the price you pay for them.
As far as that sandwich “chocking” me, I...umm..hrrrck..ACCCK!!
Just kidding. It was nummy.
Don’t you mean YUMMY?
“Nummy” is a childhood variant of “yummy”.
Sounds like a breakthrough. That’s the most civil you’ve been toward me.
I’m sensing someone needs a big hug and a protein smoothie. C’mere, you big lug, you!
Ps. On further rereading, that wasn’t meant to sound as lascivious as it comes across.
