The headline for the poll may as well have read Vote Yes to Save PBS, but the editors at Parade magazine didnt go quite that far.
A poll on Parades Web site posted on May 4 ask respondents how Congress should vote on supporting PBS with $400 million in funding, or as they put it whether to continue supporting Big Bird or give him the ax. And on top of that, NPR affiliates have joined in a campaign to skew the polls results.
In the next few months, Congress will decide whether to continue supporting Big Bird or give him the ax. Public broadcasting gets around $400 million annually from the U.S. government, which covers about 15% of local station budgets. (Most shows are funded primarily by producers, viewer donations, private foundations and corporations.) Now the Bush Administration has proposed cutting funding by half, Lyric Wallwork Winik and Mark Naymik wrote for Parade on May 4.

Thanks a lot. I really like subsidizing the Jim Lehrer Newshour.
Newshour has it's own sponsors. The federal subsidy instead pays for the excessive executive salaries at the various stations, and guarantees the generous retirement and benefits packages for the rest of the employees.
The Profile on GHWB is a pretty good watch as well.
PBS...The time for its demise is long overdue.
I thought the liberals were all set against ‘corporations’.
The ‘Corporation for Public Broadcasting’ is one of those corporation that doesn’t meet ‘free enterprise’ standards since it’s federally subsidized.
How is it the government’s job to subsidize anything but national defense? And with public monies no less!
David Crockett would be appalled.
Ruefully
There is absolutely no need for public funding.
Why don’t they get a kickback from the CTW advertisement known as Seasame Street?
The Republicans couldn’t/wouldn’t cut PBS when they controlled all the levers of power, now they control only the White House. It’s silly to think that they will do anything but “compromise” to a large increase for PBS.
I can hear the cries now as in the past if the R’s don’t give the D’s the entire amount they want.
“The Republicans ‘cut’ the budget!!”
A decrease in the increase is not a CUT!
These PBS people are all hucksters...I won’t give
them a dime until they get rid of their left wing
nutcase...u-all know who I mean...another thing,
they have a fundraiser every month it seems...I
asked for an Annual Report once to see their income
and expenses..they ignored the requestr...if we all
called in when they have the phones going..ask them
for a copy of the Report....LOL....JK
Chop! Chop! Chop!
I say cut the budget entirely. If nobody else will do those sort of shows there’s a reason.
It’s bad enough we are subjected/inundated/immersed in Socialist/Leftist crap on Network Television should we hit the ‘ON’ button of the remote, but why should we support hard core Leftism on PBS with our tax dollars.
The lies never end on PBS. They spend more time trying to milk donations with programming only seen at the time they are lying to us about what they will show us for our dollars in donations.
A couple of the primarily PBS programs are now being shown on Network Television, and can understand why as they are actually interesting.
Actually (disclaimer here) I don’t watch television, my wife does while I’m glued to this computer screen. Unfortunately she talks about what I don’t watch.
Over the last four years....off most local stations in America....they’ve cut opera, jazz, and classical off the public radio stations...going more to a news format. Everyone I know of...has commented on this. On a typical weekend...if you get six hours of opera, jazz or classic music...you are lucky. I see no reason to fund a news network...when I have two or three already at my disposal. I’d rather see PBS broken up into fifty entities....given to each state to hand out to one state college...and just let them contribute a piece to the pie.
I'd rather the government just quit funding them. The government shouldn't dole out the stations to state entities such as state colleges. They should simply get out of the entertainment and news business.
The Feds pass out money. People lobby to get it. Nothing new there.
This is one waste of our tax money that should be put on the ballot so WE can eliminate the “Public Liberal Network”
