(Louisiana House) Committee delays proposed tax break (Jindal stabs taxpayers in back - again)
Times Picayune ^ | May 12, 2008 | Jan Moller

Posted on 05/12/2008 8:58:42 AM PDT by abb

A House committee postponed action Monday on a 10-year phaseout of the state income tax.

The House Ways and Means Committee had been scheduled to vote on Senate Bill 87, which would eliminate the state income tax by 2017 at an eventual cost to the treasury of about $4 billion a year. But some legislators want to bring the bill by Sen. D.L. "Buddy" Shaw, R-Shreveport, back to its original posture when it would have rolled back the 2002 "Stelly Plan" tax increases.

"There is no rush necessarily to have this bill heard today," Rep. Hunter Greene, R-Baton Rouge, the committee's chairman, said. He added that discussions are under way on "what we can and cannot do" given the state's fiscal constraints.

The move came a day after members of another House committee approved $120 million in cuts to Gov. Bobby Jindal's budget and shifted millions of dollars to pet projects in their districts. But the state has nearly $1 billion in potential surpluses that could be used to defray the cost of a tax cut without chopping the operating budget.

Why not. Because the LEGISLATURE decides to take some or other action proves zip about whether Jindal is or is not "conservative". Which Democrat would you prefer to see replace him???

He is nowhere near conservative. He talks it, but doesn’t do it. Unlike Charlie Brown, I don’t have to kick at the football to know a setup when I see it.

The governor in Louisiana, no matter who it is, hand picks the committee chairmen and knows everything that happens there. I’ve lived in Louisiana all my 58 years and I know how it works.

Jindal is trying to kill this tax cut.

It is disappointing that so many FReepers are too dumb to figure this out.

Bobby Jindal is not a conservative.

I did not know that Bobby Jindal was the House Ways And Means Committee Of Louisiana.

This is because I was apparently laboring under two misconceptions:

(1) I thought that Jindal was elected Governor. I did not know that he had been elected House Ways And Means Committee.

(2) I thought that the Louisiana House Ways And Means Committee consisted of 19 people and that Democrats outnumbered Republicans on that committee and that Bobby Jindal was on that Committee.

In sum: I did not know that the Committee was just one person named Bobby Jindal.

Interesting comment to an article that has only passing relation to Bobby Jindal, mostly by mention of cuts to his budget, and legislators doing what Jindal has warned he'd veto - that of fundng pet projects.

So...is there any reason for the random declaration?

Bobby Jindal is not a conservative.

Yes, he is, but he's also a pragmatist, and is probably looking at what Louisiana needs after having been under corrupt Democrat governors for many years. Some of those needs might require state expenditures, but I believe he'll make the smart decisions.

Bobby Jindal hand picked the chair of this committee.

There are 53 Democrats and 49 Republicans in the Louisiana House.

Jindal is lucky, given that there are two independents on the Ways and Means Committee, that he was able to get even a compromise GOP candidate in there.

You are not going to be able to push a pure conservative agenda through a House where your party is the minority party.

Saying Jindal is not a conservative comes off as what it is: idiosyncratic personal animus, not analysis.

This is not a random declaration. I have been following this issue from the start. Jindal has tried on several occasions to torpedo this tax cut bill.

The state is awash in money due to the high price of oil and they’re staying up nights in Baton Rouge figuring out ways to spend the money.

I know what I’m talking about here. I know and live Louisiana politics.

I agree. I becomes tiresome to continually see a Rep kicked around because he MAY have a slightly different view on this or that belief. In Jindel case I have not read the entire story but if this is the work of the Congress then the criticism is really indicative of the ignorance of many here. They should know that in matters of law, and fiscal matters the Gov, like the President cannot on his own spend 1 penny. BTW, I would argue that Hitler was anything but a Conservative. It was his regime that put the masses to work in the factories and put the kids into Nazi Camps for indoctrination.

Bobby Jindal is a Mike Foster Demo..er, I mean Republican. For those outside of Louisiana politics, he’s a RINO. He will NOT repeal the Stelly Plan which socks most hard working Louisiana citizens to the tune of $600 to over $1,000 per year. That’s STATE taxes, not Federal taxes.

Which Democrat would I have preferred over Jindal? None. I held my nose when I voted for Jindal but I knew what we were getting.

What he has been doing - if you had been paying attention you would know this - is spending our tax money like a drunken sailor. Every deadhead state employee has gotten a pay raise in the four months since he's been in office. They are seriously debating a legislative pay raise. State government is awash in money. The budget has doubled over the past five years.

They are fighting this tax cut and Jindal is leading the fight.

Bobby Jindal...will NOT repeal the Stelly Plan...

The article talks of a bill that was originally drafted to repeal the Stelly Plan and then expanded to eliminate the entire State income tax, and efforts by some Republicans to reel back that expansion and redirect the bill to repealing only the Stelly Plan increases. Even if Bobby is behind this effort to limit the bill to repealing the Stelly Plan (which the article does not say, but which FReeper abb claims is so) how do you get from that to saying that Bobby Jindal won't repeal Stelly? I'm just not seeing that anywhere!

SB 87 adjusts the tax brackets in the state income tax to where it was before the Stelly Plan was enacted. On the senate floor the bill was amended to repeal the state income tax altogether over 10 years. This amendment was designed to cloud the issue and it has done so.

The clown that introduced the amendment hadn’t even proposed his own bill to repeal the tax this year. The tactic was designed to poison the original bill.

Jindal’s floor leaders were all over the senate floor when this happened as was his chief legislative liaison. I watched it happen live on streaming TV.

You can believe me or not.

Jindal is no conservative.

The original SB 87 is a tax cut of $300 million. And Jindal fought this bill. He still is.

He said during the campaign he was for tax cuts but has so far done nothing to introduce any such thing.

Meanwhile, money floods into Baton Rouge by the barrel.

Thanks for the info. It is difficult to glean the true motives of people based on reports from the dying socialist “mainstream” newsrooms. If Jindal is truly trying to stop or reduce tax cuts because he thinks the money is better off in the hands of government than working taxpayers, then sure - - he’s a worthless p.o.s. and a scumbag.

But if his problem is with other aspects of the bill (pork, for example), then he better get his p.r. machine in motion and let people know exactly what’s going on.
