Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr is expected to announce that he's running for president as a Libertarian.
His candidacy would be a wild card in the White House race that many believe would hurt Republican Sen. John McCain.
Barr had scheduled a news conference Monday. He first must win the Libertarian nomination at the party's national convention that begins May 22. Party officials consider him a front-runner

I wonder if his nomination quest in the LP will go better than Alan Keyes’ in the CP?
I am so frustrated with McCain that I am giving serious consideration to voting for Barr (assuming he is nominated.)
Barr’s always given me the creeps. There’s something about that mustache. He looks like he should play Barty Crouch in a Harry Potter movie.
They should run together for the Green Party nomination.
Any dilution of the republican vote means a victory to the Rats... Remember Ross Perot????
I’m know McCain fan but I’ll hold my nose and pull the lever
If Barr gets the nomination there will be one conservative in the race.
Im know no McCain fan but Ill hold my nose and pull the lever
Election ‘08 is going to be a freakin circus and we’ll get to vote for which clown we want to represent us.
O, joy.
He’s got my vote... Unfortunately, the liberal McCain running on the republican ticket will steal the election from him. McCain should drop out for the good of the conservative movement...
I will vote third party only if my state race is close.
But right now, I don’t see a third party candidate that I’d want to vote for. McCain is the only one who will not surrender Iraq. Even the CP intends to surrender a war that we’re clearly winning.
What is Barr’s position on Iraq?

Bob Barr, though he is a libertarian, reminds me of one of the characters who were members of the Illinois Nazi Party from The Blues Brothers.
Wise people will stay as far away from Bob Barr as possible.
Be Seeing You,
Chris
Hmmm. I like the Libertarian party for almost everything and especially government finance and personal freedom, but the loosey-goosey attitude on National Defense may be a dealbreaker for me. For example — Ron Paul may be right about it being a mistake to go into Iraq in the first place, but now that we’re there we need to make sure the job is finished, and here’s where the Libertarian party wants to cut losses and bail.
That said, a protest vote against Juan McCain is sooooo tempting. He so obviously hates core conservatives, and if he’s tweaking us now with kissy face on La Raza and global warming (when he wants as many votes as possible), what’s he gonna do when he’s in power? Man, I hate this election year.
This is all pretty funny but repubs have made their own bed. Many people who consider themselves libertarians have been voting for pubbies largely because of the two groups philosophy of fiscal restraint and the reality that the Libertarian Presidential candidates don’t stand a chance. I know that there are a lot of freepers who think libertarians are all evil yada yada yada... but when you consider that the 2000 election was won by a few hundred votes that policy of demonizing libertarians doesn’t seem very smart. McCain is probably going to lose a lot of those thousands of votes. For that matter he’s going to lose a lot of republican votes too since he’s basically a liberal and from what I can see the sort of people he would nominate to the USSC are not acceptable. If the pubbie pres won’t nominate conservative judges and considering their spending track record and the recent ascendancy of the country clubbers in the party there’s little reason to prefer McCain over the others. A lot of conservatives are going to stay home. Libertarians won’t cross over. The Republican Party has only itself to blame.
> I remember when the GOP picked McCain, the Libertarian party sent the GOP a funeral wreath. How fitting.....
I love it! Do you have a pointer to the story? I so want this to be true.
Barr is such a stupid prick. Carrying water for the Bolsheviks in the ACLU. I despise him.
I think I’ll take the morning off to start practicing saying the words, “President Obama.”
“Hes got my vote...”
And Obama’s got the White House

Here it is. Says a McCain nomination shows the death of small government policies in the RNC.
The Libertarian Party has been the death of many a Republican candidate, and the lifesaver of many an ultra-left wing RAT. If not for the LP candidate in Florida 2000, there would never have even been a recount.
I have a real problem with a party that opposes a candidate with whom they agree 80-90% to elect a candidate with whom they disagree 80-90%. A shameful legacy.
You're wasting your time. Stupid is as stupid does. Obama and his vile wife will destroy this nation. But morons like Barr and the "purists" who support him are blind to political realities.
“And Obamas got the White House”
If you think the liberal McCain can beat the liberal Obama your delusional...
Oh well. Better stock up on ammunition then. McCain is going to need those liberal votes he’s been pandering for, because he sure isn’t getting mine.
“If you think the liberal McCain can beat the liberal Obama your delusional...”
If Barr drains erstwhile McCain votes, Obama wins, duh.
This makes it harder for me to vote for McCain, or contribute in any way (funds, hours). Barr has his good points, many of them, while McCain has many lousy points.
I’m glad it’s early. I’ll see what the VP pick comes down to, both for McCain and for Barr. My joke on the matter: Bob Barr and Sam Nunn, the Barr/Nunn ticket!
“The Republican Party has only itself to blame.”
You refer to the party as if it has nothing to do with conservatives. This is our bed and yes, we only have ourselves to blame.
I've had it with liberal republicans.
My reality comment: Anyone hired by the ACLU is not a conservative and probably not much of an American.
Speaking of reality not chemically induced pipe dreams:

So am I, I think it’s a good idea to look into what he has to say.
Under no circumstances can I support McCain or Hillary. I supported Fred Thompson.
***I am so frustrated with McCain that I am giving serious consideration to voting for Barr (assuming he is nominated.)***
The further to the left McCain moves the harder it will be for any conservative to vote for him.
At this point I will vote for whoever is a conservative.
And in spite of the anti-Romians here Huck is no friend of Conservatism so as a pick for the VP spot he doesn’t work.
Oh fvck!
Just what we need: another Ross Perot-type spoiler who’ll divert enough votes to give the Dimocrat the election!
Is Obama financing this bid?
Glad I officially have someone I can vote for. Go Bob!
Both the Libertarian and the CP’s are out to lunch when it comes to war, international relations, and foreign policy.
They are isolationists living in the 1700’s.
I see the possibility of the total November 4 conservative votes being split among McCain, Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party, and Bob Barr of the Libertarian Party (should Barr win the LP Presidential nomination). This doesn’t even include all of the write-ins for POTUS and all of the conservatives who truly decide to stay home on November 4 (I truly hope that not too many conservatives decide just to stay home on November 4!).
If every Libertarian vote cast in 2000 had been cast for the GOP instead, George Bush would still have lost the popular vote by 160,000 votes.
I don't recall any major player in the GOP demonizing Libertarians in 2000 or any other election.
That "stupid prick's" speech at the March For Justice helped establish FR as the premier political site on the web. It's perfectly valid to have issues with him, but freepers should show him at least a modicum of respect.
Who’s the conservative?
Barr is a member of the ACLU and has strongly denounced the Patriot Act.
He may have once been a conservative, but not longer.
He’s the Republican version of Joseph Lieberman...ready to sell his party out over a single issue.
OUTSTANDING!...Great job! made ME laugh on this tired Monday morning.....Please keep posting this all the way to the election!
Hussein Obama”Hama may be the most dangerous man in America.
If we allow him to be elected, we will deserve whatever fate he will bring.
The election of the Clintoons is still costing this country and yet the walk of waters types are still proud of helping the Clintoons to get elected.
You are sure right about that. He sure isn't a conservative!.
No reason other than I like the sound of "Barr-Nunn '08"
Oh, here we go with the dramatics.
Barr whitewashing of the ACLU is akin to Charles Lindbergh's whitewashing of the Nazis. They are an enemy agent, bent on the destruction of America from within, as were the Nazis from without. I will offer unto Barr the respect he deserves--none.
my understanding is that this is one of the issues that he has flip flopped on and is now against the WOD.
Barr works with the ACLU to protect our 4th Amendment freedoms and reverse the abuses of the grossly misnamed Patriot Act.
Mr. Barr was not just siding with the ACLU in this effort fight this assault on our liberty. He was also siding with groups like the American Conservative Union, Americans for Tax Reform, the Free Congress Foundation, the Second Amendment Foundation, and other solidly conservative groups. Nor do they mention that bedrock conservative groups like the Christian Coalition, the National Rifle Association, Gun Owners of America, the National Association of Manufacturers, the Family Research Council, the Southeastern Legal Foundation, the Business-Industry Political Action Committee, the National Right to Life Committee, to name just a few, have also worked with the ACLU to protect a Constitutional right.
I suppose you don’t think those groups are conservative either.
I guess you support the McCain/Finegold assault on the First Amendment because the ACLU fought it.
The ACLU is that much worse than freaking La Raza?
Mr. ACLU running as a libertarian. Hmmm, seems Bob Barr is the Libertarian’s John McCain.
