LOS ANGELES It is a thought that sends shivers down the backs of Democrats, a name that brings to mind memories of an election lost that might have been won, against a war hero once referred to in headlines as a wimp who won not so much by his own strengths but because of the skill of his operatives in painting his lesser-known opponent as an out of touch liberal who refused to salute the flag or admit his mistakes, not to mention his supposedly unpatriotic wife.
Could Obama be another Dukakis?
It isnt just die-hard Clinton supporters who are pointing out the similarities. Even some Obama backers who believe that the nomination fight is over see the possible parallels, and are determined to avoid them, or at least try.
I was there. Mike Dukakis was (and is) a friend of mine. And so I can say that, while the danger is certainly worth recognizing, Barack Obama is no Mike Dukakis. Or at least he doesnt have to be.
There is no question that the Republicans will try to do to Obama what they did to Dukakis: paint him as a liberal, out of touch with the values of average (white) Americans, so far left that he has left America.

There is NO question that the RNC should do this... but, will they have the cajones to do so?
They don’t need cojones.
He IS a liberal.
He IS out of touch with middle-class and working class American values.
It is all on record, some of it on video. All we need to do is keep passing it on. He is what he is.
Estrich smells defeat. This is strategist flop sweat. And Susan KNOWS flop sweat.
“The ammunition is there: the most liberal voting record in the Senate, according to one publication, even if its a brief one; the refusal to wear the flag pin on the basis of a principle most people would have trouble recognizing...”
“...not to mention the 21st century version of Willie Horton, and sorry, but yes, I do mean Rev. Jeremiah Wright, whose rants are almost as scary to many people as Hortons escapades while on furlough.”
Well, Susan, if it looks like a duck, and walks like a duck...
Let me go on the record here and state that Obama will lose the general election in a near landslide.
Is that water heavy Sue?
From your keyboard to God’s ears.
Let me go on record here.... Obomba will not be the Dem. nominee.
LLS
She's right.
He's McGovern.
obama is way to the left of what dukakis was in ‘88.
Agreed. Too bad our side sucks at it.
I guess they don't want to give the appearance of being mean.
I don’t want to hijack this thread, but what makes you say that he won’t be the nominee?
...not to mention the 21st century version of Willie Horton, and sorry, but yes, I do mean Rev. Jeremiah Wright, whose rants are almost as scary to many people as Hortons escapades while on furlough.
Maybe that’s because Horton’s actions are a manifestation of Wright’s words.
I like her use of the word “escapades” to describe Horton’s actions—he went to prison because he robbed a gas station, killed the 17 year old kid who was working there, and stuffed his body in a large trash can. (somehow I’m sure he committed other crimes, before and after this, as well-call it a hunch)On furlough, his “escapades” consisted of breaking in a house, knifing the husband, raping and beating the wife, looting and robbing the house, and driving off in the couples’ car, which he was caught in.
Willie Horton should, in a perfect world, been given a rope necktie hanging from a tall branch. Instead, the usual suspects use him as an example of conservatives being “judgmental” and bringing up things they’d prefer left not talked about.
If Susan feels sorry for Willie, maybe they could parole him and let him live with her-on second thought, even Willie Horton doesn’t deserve that.
Interesting comment. What makes you think he won’t be? Frankly, I don’t see any possible way the Dem party can denie him without infuriating their base. The only exception to that might be a brokered convention with a compromise candidate like Gore but that seems highly improbable.
So, Susan thinks Dukakis lost in 1988 because he wanted to play ‘clean’. Hmmm... in 2008, it is not Obama that needs that advice. It’s McCain...
There is no question that the Republicans will try to do to Obama what they did to Dukakis: shine the light of truth on him, give him a microphone, give a microphone to his nutcase wife!
They'll also do a constant replay of his "pastor's" "sermons", a continuous exposure of his Weather Underground comrades, and roar with laughter as the Democrats try to keep the skeletons from rattling out of his closet (the Clintons will be a valuable resource for seeing that they do).
If you don't think this nutcase is unelectable, Susan, you've got your head in the sand.
No paint needed here, Susan.
A more accurate formulation.
Correction: From your keyboard to God's listening devices. Better?
His promises and policy statements, which he will now try to soften, include...
Higher Taxes
A Naive Foreign Policy concept
Naive Economic Policy including rejecting NAFTA and acceptance of Marxist Liberation Theology as a prescription for economic equality.
Pro Abortion Policies Including Support for Partial-Birth Abortions and Execution by Neglect to Abortion Survivors
Expanded Gay Rights Including Support for Same-Sex Marriages and Open Gays in the Military
Increased Gun Control Policies and Laws Including Banning Handguns and All Semi-Automatics
Reduced Support for Israel
Open Borders and Amnesty for Illegal Aliens
Socialized Health Care
More Spending on Social Programs as payoffs for Democrat Party Supporters
Conversion of Social Security to an Income Redistribution Program
Appointment of Liberal Judges Interpreting Laws IAW Their Political/Social Views
Reduced Oversight of Cruption-Prone Unions
B Hussein Obama has shown himself to be a liberal out of touch with America, way to the left of even Hillary Clinton. All Republicans need to do is put his own words back to the public.
As for Dukakis,
his lesser-known opponent as an out of touch liberal who refused to salute the flag or admit his mistakes, not to mention his supposedly unpatriotic wife.
I think that's an accurate description if him.
Horton's escapades while on furlough included rape and torture. And it was Dukakis who over-rode the Mass legislature to furlough an inmate like Horton, who was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Dukakis would have been another Jimmy Carter, as indeed B Hussein Obama would be....
Obama=Wright=Farakan=BLT=Nation of Islam=Enemies of USA
You said:
She’s right.

LOL
; )
I tend to agree. At this stage, I really can't see him carrying any state, save possibly CA. But a lot can and will happen between now and then.
In a way, I feel sorry for the guy and am grateful he had the guts to not only challenge the Clinton machine, but to actually prevail. Lesser men/women would never have dared in the first place.
What will be very interesting is to watch the power struggle in the Democrat Party leading up to the election and post-election.
From the mouth of none other than Paul Begala..”You can’t win the General Election with just African Americans and Geeks”. Watch for the breakdown of the West Virginia vote tomorrow night.
Whenever I read a column by Susan Estrich, I hear her voice in my head — scratchy and awful. She always reminds me of ‘Froggie’ from long ago.
This dudes an African American.

Obamakakis?
Marxists like Barry Hussein don’t need painted, Susan. Just exposed.
LOLOL!!
against McCain, Dukakis would have a chance.
two arrogant demcrats running against each other.
Obama will do this job himself. Wright, Ayers, Michelle - where there is smoke there is fire.
Actually, wasn't Al Gore the first one to throw the Horton flag on the Duke?
Not really. No one ever accused Dukakis of hating his country.
Obama has far greater negatives than Dukakis ever had. Estrich and her cohorts should stop blaming his negatives on Republicans. They are entirely his creation.
Yes, during the 1988 Democratic primaries, but the MSM has conveniently chosen to omit this fact.
One spark of intelligence left in a liberal dim bulb.
This is Clinton's 'Samson' strategy: make Obama unelectable so the wretches in the Dem party will have to nominate Her Thighness in 2012.
However, we have yet to see what the effects of this will be in the down-ticket races-- if most dems get painted with Obama's hammer and sickle in November and alienated Clinton voters (white women) stay at home or vote McCain, they'll lose big.
We'll then be governed wholly by two loser parties of whining wienies. God help us.
The irony is, it doesn't work-- the whoite male vote was more evenly split than the white women of black vote in Pennsylvania.
It's not Obama's blackness that losing a substantial portion of the white male American vote, it's his stinking anti-American Marxism as exposed by Rev. Wright's rantings. Clinton's appeals to racism are having no effect, though the WV vote will not be portrayed that way.
I say it's a stupid number. It doesn't inform as to which direction in the wrong way. So many of us think it's going too liberal, but if we answer a question like that we get painted as being pro-Obama. One more reason I don't even bother to read stories about polls.
