Poll: Most Jewish voters want Obama to win

WASHINGTON - A new Gallup survey found that 61% of Jewish voters prefer Obama to McCain, who got 32% of the Jewish support.

That number is far greater than the rate found for the general population, who only preferred Obama to McCain 45-43, according to the poll. Obama also still trails Clinton in Jewish support, according to the survey, with Clinton winning against Obama in the Jewish community 50%-43%.

Though the results showed Obama is favored by the Jewish community, the Republican Jewish Coalition pounced on them to attack Obama.

I am good friends with an orthodox rabbi who gets so enraged over this issue it's all he can do not to scream.

He said that the simple reason why Jews vote for democrats is so they can tell their friends at the museum that they are cultured and progressive because they vote for democrats.

He said they are so blind they won't realize what they've done to themselves until the knife is halfway through their necks.

To be honest, I can't think of any better explanation for why Jews will vote against their own interests like they do. It's simply bizarre.

Well put, but Jews aren't the only psychiatric case studies. How about blacks? They overwhelmingly vote Democrat despite the fact that the Democrats' welfare state all but eradicated the urban black family unit and bred at least two generations of a helpless "victim" class that is hopelessly addicted to government handouts.

Come to think of it, probably the biggest morons of them all are the (admittedly few) taxpaying, traditional American families who vote Democrat. That's another puzzle that cannot be explained by mere stupidity.

Agreed if McCain can pounce on Obama harder and harder on the issue of Israel and Obama’s Anti-Israeli picks whom he had to fire to still keep the Jewish votes, it might go up. 32% is actually bigger than the Jewish vote for President Bush. However the last time that Jews voted overwhelmingly for a Republican was Dwight David Eisenhower which I read somewhere on here.

I am, however, alone from that forefront. I think that a part of this drive to vote for Democrats is because Jews usually live in very Liberal areas, they are mostly Liberal religiously, think that the Democrats are the Party of FDR and Truman on foreign policy, and were victims(like many groups were) all the way back then. I am Jewish but I am not a Democrat. I also personally believe that the first ethnic minority to leave the Democrats should be the Jewish people. But then it seems like everybody is cozy in lockstep.

Possibly also a biggest reason why my Jewish Aunt and Uncle will not vote for a Republican is because of a fear that they will be converted to Christianity by people like President Bush. There is nothing more powerful than irrational fear.

On Fri, My brother and SIL took their dog back to the vet to get a follow up and reg vet was not in but her associate was seeing her patients. My SIL (doesnt’ know much about politics) came up to see me after the visit to tell me about it. 3 Minutes after walking into the office, introducing himself, he comes out with Well, Who you voting for? My SIL says McCain and this doc goes off on here with all the liberal talking points, My brother was trying to tell my SIL to shut up but she was pis**d.
I told here she wasnt mad enough because I would have picked up my dog and walked out asking him if he was a vet or political adviser. My brother told her on the way home, he was the typical Upper Middle Class Lib that likes to be able to say “look at me, I can vote for him” (dr was Jewish)

By way of full disclosure, I am an unalloyed goy so I might be wading into waters which are much deeper than I know as I make the following generalizations:

There is a scriptural commandment in the Torah and in those writings which exegete it, to go forth not to proselytize but to do good. As conservatives, we recognize there is a human tendency to want to do more good by grabbing the levers of government to organize the whole of society to do even more good.

If one is secular, and I think these statistics embrace secular Jews to a far greater degree than observant Jews, the temptation is almost irresistible to play God. If one is to play God, by definition, one seeks to play in the biggest playground of all and that is offered up along with control of the levers of government. Hence, Jewish secularists, like Christian secularists, as a group tend to be statists.

Jewish tradition going back to Russia is a tradition of socialism. For example, that tradition was carried over into the kibbutzim in Israel.

Jewish culture puts a premium on education and traditionally makes the fool the butt of jokes. This is been especially harmful to George Bush. In the modern American secular Jewish culture to announce oneself to be a Republican is the practical equivalent of taking a pratfall in front of all your neighbors and friends at the country club. Can you imagine a Jewish intellectual at a prestigious American University confessing to one and all that he supports George Bush?as a kid I can recall being told how stupid Dwight Eisenhower was and every subsequent Republican president in my lifetime has been called either stupid or clumsy or both -except Nixon.

Liberalism is a substitute religion and therefore secular Jews, like secular goyim, gravitate to that political persuasion. Liberalism as a religion trumps religious affiliation of non- observant Jews and trumps cultural affinity to Jews who might otherwise be sympathetic to Israel.

Because of Europe's unfortunate history of programs, Jews traditionally are wary of aggressive Christianity and many secular Jews have not yet come to the understanding that American fundamentalist Christians are great friends of Israel and hence of Jews in general. There are other issues which Jewish history make Jews as a group favor one side as a matter of self-preservation. These include, for example, immigration. And they also include the end to segregation and civil rights for all races and creeds.

Barak Obama, of course, is the beau ideal of the black man, well-educated and articulate, who is on the right side of all of these issues and who embodies in his own person the inclusiveness which, if universally practiced, protects Jews as a class.

Agreed. Far too many Jews have been uncomfortable with a strong Israel for decades, and seem to draw both their meaning in life, AND their sense of self, through victimhood. It seems that they're only sure of who they are while they see themselves as helpless. It's almost like a little kid shouting "you'll miss me when I'm gone!"

I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. My Jewish family and I have never been Democrats. We discuss politics and world affairs all the time. One of our endless discussions is how to slap up the American Jewish collective upside the head and get them to actually see what they are supporting. Oy, it gives me a headache. While Israel celebrates her 60th birthday, they support a candidate who is supported by people who are planning her funeral.

Its likely that a majority of Jews are liberal and a good many Leftists (though probably not a majority) are antisemitic. Whether this is conscious or subconscious bias, I do not know, but it exists and it mostly manifests itself as antipathy toward Israel. Sadly, in response to this, many liberal Jews have chosen to distance themselves from Israel rather than defend it. This is to stay in good with the liberal cause, because (ultimately) liberalism is their real religion. I'm sure this perceived self-hatred on their part only reinforces the attitude of their antisemitic “friends”. These Jews may be well educated and cultured, but they are textbook examples of useful idiots.

I'm Jewish and I don't really give a rat's @ss about Israel, beyond whatever strategic significance they hold for the USA. I am 100% American and concern myself with my country, not Israel. Coming from a thoroughly mixed (-up?) family myself, my observation is that there are very large numbers of American Jews who know so little about about Israel that it is hard to have an intelligent conversation with them about the subject.

That’s my theory, based on years of observation. If you’re Jewish, it’s expected by your peers that you will be “progressive”. Like the African-American community, where if you vote for a Republican, you are no longer “black”.

After reading the first 49 replies, I have one other observation to make. It appears that Jews, like many other liberal groups, like to be part of the majority of the in-crowd, and so they will say they are Democrats or liberals to remain in good company.

In this election, however, I sense an undercurrent among the Jewish voting population, which may yet proove that these new polls on Obama vs. McCain are skewed. If McCain is already doing better against Obama than previous GOP Presidential nominees have done, that may be a prediction of more defections to come. It is surprising to me that so many voters really do not yet have any comprehension about Obama’s background and his political philosophy, much less about his stanves on Israel, Hamas, Iran, etc..
