LINCOLN, Neb. Former Colorado senator and two-time presidential candidate Gary Hart told Nebraska Democrats that Barack Obama will heal the national party, while John McCain's nomination may cause a rift among Republicans.
"There's a real struggle for the soul of the Republican Party under way," Hart said Saturday before the state Democratic Party's annual Morrison-Exon Day Dinner. About 450 people attended the party's largest fundraising event.
Hart, 71, sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988, and was a U.S. senator from 1975 to 1987.
Hart said the Republican Party is going to find its ties to religious conservatives, neoconservative foreign policy and libertarian taxpayers at odds with its traditional politics a balanced budget, caution in foreign policy and less government interference in private lives.
"Sooner or later," he said, "the very, very deep division of the Republican Party is going to come out."
He said the result will be fewer Republicans voting in November and fewer supporting their party's candidate.
Hart, who was has endorsed Obama, also said the Illinois senator will get the Democratic nomination over Hillary Rodham Clinton and that will be good for the U.S.
"What Hillary Clinton offers is a return to the '90s, while Obama would take us into the 21st century," he said, adding that it's a generational contest with few policy differences between candidates.
"I believe we do need a generational change with a fresh new leader with new supporters offering revolutionary change," he said.
Leave it to Wrong Way Hartpence to get it EXACTLY backwards.
We are in the 21st century. We don't need to be taken.
More monkey business from Sen Hart.
Yes,
I am going to vote for Barak Hussein Obama, Hart is so wise.
In other words, Europe, here we come.
LOL... didn’t the superdelegates (along with unfortunate monkeybusiness pictures) doom Hart’s campaign in 1984?
Yes, upon his observations and wise counsel, I will vote Obama. Thanks Mr. Hart. /s
What I’m finding increasingly irritating is that Barack Obama and his minions endlessly talk about change, about bringing us into the 21-st century. But WHEN if EVER do you see these turkeys actually talking about what changes they’re talking about?
It’s the most devoid of susbstance mumbo-jumbo I’ve ever heard in my life, and there are apparently enough brainless idiots out there to eat it up and get the man elected.
but when mccccccccccain speaks to la raza
are you going to vote for mcccccccccccain?
He's not wrong on this. This conservative isn't voting for the author of the McCain/Feingold bill. Ain't going to happen. I am not choosing the lesser of two evils on this one, McCain wouldn't even be in a position to be the nominee if he hadn't gotten so much media support over the past 30 years by bashing us over the head with their microphones. At least with Obama admits he holds my basic beliefs in contempt.
The change from a FREE MARKET BASED ECONOMY to a SOCIALIST MARKET BASED ECONOMY and from a republic to a dicatorship!
Bwahahaha. I saw my first operation chaos bumper sticker today. I'm not sure I laughed harder at the bumper sticker or the quote of Mr. Hart.........
WTF does this loser know about the Republican Party?
You gotta give us some RICE (pictures) with that comment.
I want change: I want the border secured & the illegals deported; criminals caught & jailed; students taught English, math, reading & writing; Iran neutralized; ANWR & the Gulf drilled & nuclear power brought back!
He also got pwned by the likes of Walter Mondale.
Yup. He's the guy who knows where the beef is (and where the salami goes). He's quite a guy.
The GOP buffoons in congress are too wed to pork. Cautious foreign policy is foolish considering the lessons of history. Neville Chamberlain's caution and our own complacency pre-9/11 have shown that caution only gives your enemy more time to smack you. If the jackasses like that guy from Georgia who wants to ban Playboy from military bases would stfu, we wouldn't look like a bunch of prudes.
Sometimes these guys just don't get better!~
Right. Now that my attention is at a maximum....I think I'll take a snooze.
Its a free country: You are certainly welcome to go into the sanctity of the voting booth and vote third party or write-in Daffy Duck or even Ron Paul, or not vote at all. But please dont come crying to me a year from now because of your taxes going up to pay for slavery reparations, Muslim indoctrination in your kids schools, and the martial law that President Obama declared after the gun confiscation riots.
what ever you say Monkeyboy...

She was perhaps the most genuinely attractive of all the various political scandal bimbos.

She still looks pretty good.
But please dont come crying to me a year from now because of your taxes going up to pay for slavery reparations, Muslim indoctrination in your kids schools, and the martial law that President Obama declared after the gun confiscation riots.
LOL! Guy, you are going batty.
Hint: That isn’t going to get +1 vote for McCain.
I'll vote for the one with the Hotter looking wife!
Hyperbole tends to damage credibility.
We survived Clinton, (Conservatism actually thrived) we will survive Obama (more likely McCain IMO)
Amen! I want the second amendment enforced, not ignored. Freedom of the press to be the right not to be lied to. Lefties to take advantage of their right to vote with their feet and go to Zimbabwe where they will be at home with all they want this country to be.
I’m a nerd for knowing how funny that is.
As for money - no way - suck his wife dry. If Hitlery can borrow and use her own money, then McPain can suck his wife dry. He doesn't need our money. He'll get it soon enough with his ridiculous environMENTAL tax increases due to “global warming” - LOL!
Oh yes, Gary Hart, man of great judgment. We all know he is spot on with his conclusion!
We survived Clinton, (Conservatism actually thrived) we will survive Obama (more likely McCain IMO)"
President Bill Clinton was a moderate republican in comparison to Illinois Senator Barack Hussein Muhammad Obama, IMO. The man was raised as a Muslim in Indonesia and Hawaii, worked for the communist front group ACORN in Chicago, worked with and socialized with terrorists, especially Bill Ayers, an unrepentant domestic bomber & Weather Underground operative. I won't even go into the Trinity UCC subject. Do I need to go on? Are you seriously telling me that there is little or no difference between Obama and a war hero?!
Don’t forget his running mate... Godzilla!
There is little to no difference between Obama and BJ Clinton, which I think was the point.
Superdelegates had a hand in putting "Landslide" Mondale in over Hart in '84. Monkeybusiness was in '88.
Actually, the NuRepublicans (all those ‘moderates, democrats’ etc) support McCain. It’s the CONSERVATIVES who have the problem with McCain’s liberal leanings.
*sigh*
Oh, so this time the sky is really falling?
The number of times I heard that Clinton was the literal anti-Christ, and that mother Russia would be running the US from Moscow under a Clinton presidency, etc, and etc...
Are you seriously telling me that there is little or no difference between Obama and a war hero?!
Not remotely. I'm telling you that I am not giving my vote the guy that made it illegal for Right To Life or the NRA to say a candidate's name in an ad within 60 days of an election.
I don’t agree with Hart’s comments about Obama, but there’s some truth in what he says about McCain and divisions among the Republicans. You can see some of those divisions in this thread.
By the way, Donna Rice, the model who appears with Hart in those photos and helped end his presidential ambitions, is today a conservative and an effective anti-pornography activist.
"I'LL SEND MCCAIN MONEY WHEN HE STOPS BUYING INTO THE GLOBAL WARMING BS.!"
And sent it back in the postage-paid envelope. This is a deal-breaker for me. It's either Bob Barr or the Constitution Party unless McCain changes his stance on global warming.
Hank
Where McCain will get his best mileage with conservatives is dangling the contrast between the SCOTUS nominees he says he is likely to offer up with the ones that Obama is likely to offer up. Even given my political animus to McCain, I will admit its a compelling point.
Of course precedent dictates that McCain, true to his "Maverick" title would throw us under the bus with a liberal nominee just to get a little love from the NYT.
Tells you what I know about D politics Of course, I was exactly two and six during those elections. ;)
It’s kinda funny that Hart had a hand in creating the nomination process that ended up screwing him over though.. Talk about delicious irony.
It is amazing how the press continues to listen to liberal men who can’t keep their john thompson in their knickers.
A freeper has noted, and I completely agree, that the GOP needs the primary system the rats ‘enjoy’.
With the modification of closed GOP primaries in every state.
The SD system would bring about accountability in the party, and we’d get better candidates if they weren’t subject to the gamed primary system we currently use.
Correct. But only by totally surrendering it to the most radical elements of the AA faction.
We need closed primaries, but more importantly we need to ditch the cockamamie winner-take-all system.
Look at Missouri. One guy gets 35% of the vote and he gets ALL of the delegates and the two other guys who both got over 30% get NONE?
Ridiculous. The Dems are right to do at least partial proportionate representation. We wouldn’t be stuck with McStain without the winner-take-all system.
Hank
And Hussein Mohammad Obama or Clinton will unite the Republicans.
