Heavy clashes erupted south of Beirut yesterday between mainly Shia and Druze militants, breaking a tense calm that had taken hold after feuding factions reached a tentative agreement to end four days of fighting.

The crackle of machinegun fire and thump of exploding mortar rounds echoed through the town of Shwayfat on the lower slopes of the Chouf mountains overlooking southern Beirut as fighters from the Shia group Hezbollah and its allies fought Druze gunmen loyal to Walid Jumblatt, a key government ally.

Druze aren’t really considered to be moslems, eventhough their roots are in Islam.

Actually, it’s ROP members killing ancient sect members who are loyal to a currently anti-Syrian leader, and Christian-led government forces caught in the crossfire.

Quite straightforward, really. /s

Druze: a member of an independent religious sect living chiefly in Syria, Lebanon, and Israel, established in the 11th century as a branch of Islam Shiism and containing elements of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, and believing in the transmigration of souls and the ultimate perfection of humankind. Proclaiming their Muslim origins and subsequent obedience to Islam.

I'm looking, without success, for a downside here.

Gee, you obviously don't know what you're talking about.

Look harder. The Lebanese Army are armed and trained by the United States of America and back (more or less) the democratically elected pro-US government. If you're totally lost, root for them and root against Hezbollah.

Imagine what it'd be like if the UN hadn't disarmed Hezbollah after the last war.

Obviously my education is lacking … please elucidate.

Lebanon is a tragic story of a prosperous, predominantly Christian country that fell into civil war as the muslims "bred" themselves into power there. As more and more muslims arrived from other countries, they started demanding more and more legal concessions geared specifically for them.

When their numbers got high enough, they started demanding control of the government. When that wasn't granted, they started (you guessed it) blowing things up, then fighting among themselves for the projected spoils.

So it's really Maronite Christians, Shiites, Sunni, and Druse involved. The Christians are trying to hold onto their government in the hopes that they can once again make Lebanon a beautiful place. If you want to learn more, read Brigitte Gabriel's "Because They Hate". It's a warning that the US is going down the same road that Lebanon did.
