Polar bears OK without our help
The Boston Hearld ^ | May 11, 2008 | Hearld editorial staff

Posted on 05/11/2008 4:40:41 PM PDT by CedarDave

Thursday is the deadline set by a federal judge in Alaska for the Fish and Wildlife Service to decide whether the polar bear is a threatened or endangered species.

All the evidence shows the polar bear doesn’t need his help.

Environmental groups petitioned for such a listing and sued when a decision was not forthcoming by the deadline. They claimed that global warming had already diminished polar ice, would continue to do so and doom the estimated 23,000 or so bears to extinction by perhaps 2050.

If the bears were listed, the service would be obliged to designate “critical habitat.” ...

The environmentalists, if not the service, could claim that any activity that emitted carbon dioxide, the chief gas causing the supposed warming, could not be authorized, financed or done by a federal agency. The agencies would have to bring the modern world to a crash as no fossil fuels could be burned in power plants, no highways built and so forth throughout the economy.

The plaintiffs’ claims are highly dubious. Polar ice is shrinking, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in October that it was caused not by warming but a shift in wind patterns that pushed more ice out of the Arctic. ...

Polar bears have been around for 100,000 years, surviving much warmer temperatures before the last ice age. Population estimates are subject to huge and unknowable uncertainties. Native groups say there are more than there were several decades ago. Environmentalists are pursuing another petition to list a seal species as endangered - one eaten by bears, it seems. If there weren’t so many bears, there’d be more seals.

Canada, on whose territory about two-thirds of the bears live, has refused to classify them as threatened or endangered. The United States should follow suit.

This from the Boston Herald. It is nice to know that some press in the northeastern US can still think independently and not automatically jump on the "save the polar bear" dog sled.

We have polar bears in Phoenix. Give ‘em a beer keg in a pool with a few blocks of ice in it and they’re happy.

During WW2 my father-in-law, who was in the navy, he and his buddies would use polar bears for target practice in Alaska. He said the meat was lousy.

Government regulation is always a morass. In this case, if the government ruled that the polar bear was endangered because of encroachment of habitat, citizens would be required to mitigate teh encroachment.

When this involved a snail, it meant you might not build a dam. If it’s an owl, you might not be able to cut down some logs.

But in this case, the result would be that you could not make the ice cap melt. which would mean if you wanted to do ANYTHING, you would have to prove it wouldn’t increase “global warming” and therefore damage the ice habitat of the polar bear.

This is certainly beyond anything envisioned by the legislation.

I wish we could feed the environmentalist to the polar bears

It's one thing to kill for sport or food, but cruelty to animals is beyond the pale... Environmentalists indeed. Poor bears.

Those who think polar bears are endangered should be forced to hug one.

The last I read was that the ice was well above normal and that the bears had doubled since 1974. I hope they do not overpopulate and starve.

But in this case, the result would be that you could not make the ice cap melt. which would mean if you wanted to do ANYTHING, you would have to purchase enough carbon credits, and then, to hell with the polar bears, full steam ahead.

Starving bears will be blamed on global warming no matter the true cause, including overpopulation. Right now any that have trouble catching seals for whatever reason are shown thin with the caption "starving due to global warming."

Looks to me like there is more ice on this same date as compared to 10 years ago. On this site you can enter any dates you like back to 1979 to compare ice levels from satellite pictures. Somehow the environmental wackos don’t like to mention this now. http://igloo.atmos.uiuc.edu/cgi-bin/test/print.sh?fm=05&fd=10&fy=1990&sm=05&sd=10&sy=2008

Too bad. If it was tasty, they wouldn't be endangered. Animals we eat are seldom endangered.

And .. if anybody is paying attention, it was mentioned on FOX yesterday that some of the hindrances to drilling in ANWR have been resolved (whatever that means).

Soooooo .. is anybody getting the picture ..?? This polar bear thing is just another attempt by the environmental whackos to stop the drilling - TO SAVE THE POLAR BEAR.

These people have no shame! They’ll tell any LIE to get their way.

Looks about the same to me except for some further south at the Bering Straits. but certainly no less than in 1990.

Interestingly, this is from a site University of Illinois is very pro-Al Gore and global warming, but if people start using this comparison tool, I bet it won't be too long before they pull it. They started using it last year when it helped them show the one-year difference between 2006 and 2007, but weren't smart enough to reason that people would start comparing older data. http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/

Survival of the fittest demands that these animals be sent to the great beyond. They obviously are not able compete with man—because they are not the fittest.

The reasonable position is not to list Polar bears on ESA.

Hence, Polar bears will be listed as endangered.

Before you posted, I had just looked at that data and can see why it would support a hypothesis that the arctic is warming. Not so this year; here it is May and snow in southern Colorado is still deep. Picture taken May 1.

“Polar bears will be listed as endangered.”

Which has been a popular joke being passed around the polar bear population.

The story is that the polar bears know the ice caps are really growing, and will grow larger, as a new ice age dawns, and they will be expanding their territory.

The ‘joke’ is that they aren’t the endangered ones, the humans are, and don’t know it.
