MOUNT VERNON, Mo. - , an influential gospel singer and songwriter, died early Sunday when her tour bus ran off the highway and struck an embankment. She was 74.

Seven other people on the bus were injured in the wreck about two miles east of Mount Vernon on Interstate 44, the Missouri Highway Patrol said. They were hospitalized in Springfield with moderate to severe injuries, according to the patrol.

It was unclear whether the crash was related to the severe storms and tornadoes that hit the region on Saturday. Storms also swept through the area later in the night, according to the National Weather Service.

Rambo, of Nashville, Tenn., was on her way to a Mother's Day performance in Texas, according to her Web site.

"She was a giant in the gospel music industry," said Beckie Simmons, Rambo's agent. "Dolly Parton recorded some of her songs."

Rambo was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame last year and the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame in 2006.

Rambo has had more than 2,500 published songs, including gospel classics such as "He Looked Beyond My Fault and Saw My Need" and the 1982 Gospel Music Association Song of the Year, "We Shall Behold Him."

My favorite song of hers was “The Artist”. She wrote many great inspirational songs. She was a great lady. Her daughter is also a wonderful Christian singer. Rest in peace with Jesus, great lady. I didn’t know her personally but feel close to her by feeling the Spirit through her songs.

I used to watch her with my Mom when I was little. Am I mistaken, or did she sing with a sister or a maybe her mother?

My sympathy to her family on their loss but I’m sure they are rejoicing for her. She was on her way to preform a mothers day concert here but wound up singing before the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! You cant beat that.

I used to go to her concerts with my mother too.
I thought Reba Rambo who performed with them was her daughter.

She sang with her daughter and Buck Rambo, her husband. Does anybody know what happened between Buck and her?

Dottie suffered through so much physical pain in her life. Instead of lying down and giving up, she wrote songs of great praise to a great God. Truly, if ever a woman had the grace of God in her life and the evidence of the sufficiency of that grace, it would be Dottie Rambo.

So sorry to read this - for her family and loved ones and for all those who have enjoyed Dottie Rambo’s music through the years. She was a humble giant in Gospel music. I heard Dottie and her daughter (I believe) sing Dottie’s composition of Behold the Lamb.....breathtakingly beautiful!

She is now beholding the Lamb of God face to face - all praise and glory and honor to our Lord, the Lamb of God!

Found this pic of her with Loretta Lynn that somehow seemed appropriate. A terrible tragedy to die in a tour bus accident on Mothers's Day. Our prayers go out to her family and her many friends and fans. Rest in Peace Dottie.

Very cool! Awesome as one might say!

I found this version of “Behold the Lamb” by David Phelps...

He is a wonderful singer - but the original by the Rambos....is purely priceless...

On the brighter side, Heaven’s Band will sound that much sweeter with the new songwriter amongst them. Dottie suffered with pain here but that’s gone now and she’s brand new!

I drove past the bus this morning as they was getting it out of the ditch.

There was some really strong wind gusts last night after the storms that caused the tornadoes went by.

RIP Ms Rambo. Your mission is complete.

“Does anybody know what happened between Buck and her?”

She divorced him due to infidelity on the part of her husband. He and his current wife, Mae, are associate pastors at a church in Nashville, TN. The church is led by his daughter and son-in-law, Reba and Dony McGuire.

Thanks, for the info. Dottie’s life is indeed marked with suffering. In this case of an emotional type. I see some posts saying she had to live with some sort of constant physical pain also. Do you know what it was?

“Rambo suffered a ruptured disk in her spine that caused her vertebrae to calcify to her spinal cord. She underwent more than a dozen surgeries, one of which went awry and left her paralyzed and in chronic pain. She refused to let her medical condition get the worst of her and she continued to do what she loves best.”

You can read more about her at this link http://www.amarillo.com/stories/012707/fai_6633589.shtml
