NY: State Proposes Ban on Open Burning

Albany, N.Y.- New York environmental officials have proposed a statewide ban on open burning, to reduce pollution and the risk of wildfires.

Current rules exempt the state's 850 towns with fewer than 20,000 people.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says burn barrels release 17 times more dioxin and 40 times more ash than permitted incinerators.

The proposed ban would make some exceptions, including small campfires and cooking fires, ceremonial fires and certain types of agricultural waste burning.

The DEC has scheduled seven public hearings across the state between June 23 and July 2.

More Nannystatism from New York. While I see the wisdom of preventing bonfires and burn barrels in more populated areas, there are a lot of rural communities upstate, with farms, where a ban makes no sense whatsoever.

I am surprised New York would ban flaming homosexuals in public.

More trash to be picked up by trash collectors.

And we all know the trash business is a completely legitimate, non-partisan and non-profit business run by only the most reputable types of folks.

“Ceremonial fires”

ceremonia, from L. cærimonia “awe, reverent rite,”

So if it’s an awsome fire it’s okay.

Build a man a fire, and he will be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Leaves?

Something you rarely smell anymore, burning leaves on crisp autumn days. Pleasant memories from my youth.

Remember the “controlled burn” by DEC in the (protected) Pine Bush area of Albany? It was about 85 degrees, humidity about 10% along with 35 mph winds. Needless to say that it got out of control and burned about 40 acres of the RARE Blue Karner Butterfly habitat!

“Leaves?”

Watch wood stoves, pellet stoves and fireplaces be their next target. “Small” campfires will become “No Campfires”. Special Agriculture Permits will become fee driven I guarantee!

In New York State you must remember that you, the citizen, are nothing more than a source of revenue for the corrupt politicians.

For years now I have advocated an even more radical idea than the Jeffersonian Republicans and that is not merely that the states act with much greater independence and sovereignty than is currently permitted, or desired, but that we, for all intents and purposes, adopt home rule.

Though I wish to see all Americans free and guided by the spirit and intent of the Constitution, I think it much preferable that if a predominant portion of the people (usually merely the urban area and its attendant surroundings) wishes to inflict the sin of universal health care or welfare statism, that it be done only in that municipality and paid for by the people of that locale.

I understand that we do retain some aspects of this principle in our governance but it is long past the point where we should end the tyranny of the urban areas over vast swaths of populace who want nothing to do with those policies or values.

Or, alternately, a strong leader needs to emerge who will truly ENFORCE the Constitution, so much so that a new era of ordered liberty will rise to prominence and to such a point where the pathetic mewlings of the Marxist and statist elites are mocked and forgotten.
