D.C. to arm police with assault rifles
Washington Times ^ | 09 may 08 | David C. Lipscomb

The Metropolitan Police Department has joined other major U.S. cities in arming patrol officers with assault rifles to protect them against criminals with high-powered weapons, weeks after being released from a federal program that monitors the use of excessive force.

"We want to be as accurate as possible and have more stopping power," Assistant Chief Patrick Burke said yesterday.

The department already has 500 semiautomatic AR-15 rifles, which were converted from fully automatic rifles, and has trained 340 officers to use them.

Why? Such weapons are only useful for criminals and terrorists, according to the DC police. Which are the DC police? Criminals, or terrorists?

The most disarmed city in America? Or, are they expecting some post election problems when the new president proclaims himself dictator.

They need to be armed in a similar fashion as the police around the nation.

Gee wiz, those heavily armed polygamist in Texas were proof positive of the need to use armored troop carriers, fully auto weapons and sniper positions during their raid.

I heard they had armored piercing oatmeal pies they readied for deployment on that compound.

Not only that, the compound kids were ordered to put out all available jax to hinder the armored troop carriers movements during the raid.

Shew......lucky Janet Reno wasn't there. Those deadly polygamist would get what they had coming oatmeal armaments or not.

I don't understand ,I thought that gun bans which disarmed citizens would show the criminals that they didn't need their guns and they would disarm so as not to violate the law!

No law enforcement body should be able to possess any firearm that is forbidden to private citizens.

If these kinds of weapons are forbidden to the public, then those who are touted as public servants should be held to the same standard.

Give the police full auto rifles too. So what? We citizens never had a complaint about that.

“Don’t do as I do, do as I say!”

And yet, these same cops want to go door-to-door to ask homeowners if they have guns on the premises. Shhesh!

Armed men are free men, disarmed men are subjects.

There’s not much room left for free men in America and if you’ll listen to all the subtle and no so subtle hints coming from law enforcement and politicians, free men are no longer welcome here.

The America of our fathers is dying and we’ve got seats on the front pew for the funeral.

This will not go well for innocent bystanders.

They can kick your door down, kill your dog, throw you and your children to the floor, cursing and screaming that you're going to die while they force you in handcuffs and when they realize they f*cked up, it's "Oh well, sorry."

All happily excused because some stupid scum in the country like to ingest poison.

Dead innocents in a free fire incident will be looked at as nothing but collateral damage for the "greater good".

June, when the Supreme Court tells them that DC residents can be armed after all. That’s when the DC powers-that-be will have their “the court has issued their verdict, now let them enforce it” moment.

Once they have them, they will use them.

All you D.C. residents better duck and cover.

The BATF will still consider them machine guns.
Clinton gave Los Angeles full autos in the 1990’s, then he gave them bayonets so if they miss they can stick it.

"We want to be as accurate as possible and have more stopping power,"

ROTFLMAO.

The gun can't be any more accurate than the shooter, and NYPD is not know for being particularly good shots (some snipers aside of course).

Stopping Power and AR-15 semi-auto also don't belong in the same sentence, unless they are chambered for 7.62x39 or one of the new 7mm short cartridges, like 6.8 SPC, 6.5 Grendle, etc. or even the really big bores like .45 Bushmaster, .50 Beowolf or .458 SOCOM. :)

I thought law enforcement was exempt from all the hoops we have to jump through.

They are. For example you could no have a semi-auto converted from full auto, unless "converted" means a new receiver and certain new internal parts as well. In their case it's probably less involved than that. But you are correct, they could have full auto or 3 round burst if they wanted them.

But the prime reason they don't want them is likely that the powers that be in and over the NYPD don't trust their run of the mill patrol officers with full auto, and probably with good reason in many cases.

I think he’s equating massed fire with stopping power.

It’s a common mistake made by the firearm illiterate.

Me thinks this be a bit of "compensation" for the upcoming Heller decision.

Quick!! We need more guns! Really big guns!! The Supreme Court is going to let the peons arm themselves! AH-H-H-H, THE SKY IS FALLING!!

Or fellow officers in the line of fire - those .223 go through Kevlar. A better choice would be rifle chambered in pistol caliber.

The good news is, not all politicians and not all law enforcement leaders are gun grabbers.

Freedom loving armed men will fight back if and when the times comes, and large numbers of police and military will be on the side of the defenders of freedom.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, some of our military officers met some former high-ranking Soviet military officers at an international symposium. One of the American military officers asked one of the retired Soviet military officers if the Soviet Union had ever considered invading the United States. The Russian laughed and said, “Oh no! You have too many guns over there.”

As I understand it, the .322 ammo that usually goes in those guns is merely meant to wound an opponent, not kill him.
