Rep. Sestak Joins Sponsors for Assault Weapons Ban
KYW Newsradio ^ | 08 May 2008 | David Madden

Posted on 05/09/2008 4:15:12 PM PDT by neverdem

A move to reinstate a federal ban on assault weapons now has a new co-sponsor on Capitol Hill, and he says last week’s murder of Philadelphia police officer Stephen Liczbinski is what prompted him to act.

Suburban US congressman Joe Sestak (D-Pa.) admits that the plan has been in the pipeline for months, and concedes that its chances for passage this term are slim. But Sestak (in file photo above) insists that the Liczbinski slaying merely prompted him to act on a measure he’s always supported:

"There’s no need to have our law enforcement officers having to feel like they’re going into downtown Baghdad. This is one where we want them to feel safe -- relatively safe."

Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-Pa.) was one of about five dozen members who co-sponsored the measure shortly after its introduction more than a year ago, by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY). It would reinstate the ban on 19 assault weapons that was approved in the '90s but allowed to expire four years ago. It’s currently in committee.

These scumbags draft these laws and them file them away knowing that they would never pass under normal circumstance. Then when some tragedy occurs they pull out the appropriate file folder and and use the emotions of the moment to ram it home. These idiots probably jumped for joy when that officer was shot, knowing full well the opportunity it offered them.

Its the legislative equivalent of ambulance chasing.

The boundless stupidity of these dimwit DhimmiRat Libs never ceases to amaze me.

It was NOT the firearm that killed that man. It was the sick, criminal, shooter holding it. The legal beef in this one is with the perp, not the weapon.

Assault weapon ban? Completely unnecessary, and a clear trampling of the Second Amendment right recognized in the US Constitution.

It’s in the tagline...

Usually when a legislator or a local police chief are talking about assault weapons, there’s always the accompanied verbage of purchasing the M4 Carbine for their own police force so they won’t have to show up at a gun fight with a pistol against the other guy’s AK-47.

First, since when do police show up on the crime scene while the crime is still ongoing? Virtually never. It’s a minor miracle if they can even get the police report filed correctly. LOL!

Second, if you’re lousy with a .9MM Beretta Model 96 you’re not going to magically transfer into a crack shot by picking up an M4.

Third, buying 500-2000 M4’s for your police dept is downright expensive.

Fourth, most importantly, why are our police forces parading around like they’re the 7th Cavalry? They’re supposed to be a civilian police force. Enough of the militarization, please!

Yours truly,
The Woim

The utter stupidity of these people never ceases to amaze me. First, it’s likely the murderer obtained the gun illegally in the first place. However, it doesn’t matter one bit.

If somebody is willing to rob a bank and murder a police officer, they have more than demonstrated their total indifference to the law. Committing two felonies (at least one of which is punishable by death) should certainly illustrate that they don’t give a damn about any gun laws. In other words, any ban on assault weapons (including decades-old Chinese rifles) WOULD HAVE ACCOMPLISHED NOTHING HERE. They weren’t convinced by the previous ban’s utter uselessness, so I guess they have to try it again.

The only difference between them and the communists ans national socialists in Stalin and Hitler’s day in th ehe spelling of their names.

Yet the American voters keep electing them in election after election.

As I suspected, the weapon was not an assault weapon, but a semi auto clone.
Are they going to try to change the defination of an assault weapon now?

“Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey then got into the mix.
“I don’t care about Wikipedia or any other kind of pedias,” he said. “If it’s not an assault weapon by definition, then add it to the freaking list.”

I have a father-in-law, nephew and daughter now in, or have been in the past, LEOs, so I am NOT on an anti-police tirade. However, if these police in Philly are not “feeling relatively safe”, they picked the wrong profession and should have become librarians. Geez.

How does the number of innocents shot by police compare by the number of innocents shot by citizens with "assault weapons" or assault rifles (not by police)? How would the stats compare if taken as a fraction of the number of police, or of the number of citizens who own such weapons?

It seems to me that citizens with "assault weapons" aren't the problem. Police who go on pseudo-SWAT raids are a bigger problem. Perhaps what's needed is a ban on the carrying of assault weapons by police?

Socialist scum like him don’t listen to the likes of you and I. In fact, it is my opinion that writing scathing letters to people like Sestak simply reinforces their conviction they are right (that’s the only effect it had on Boxer, Feinstein and Pelosi). We’re all just knuckle-dragging, gun-toting baboons to him and his ilk. Their first reaction to the e-mail would be to wonder who we paid to turn on the computer and write it for us.

Instead, I’ll just go to the store, stock up on ammo while its still legal to buy in this state and renew my NRA membership. And if I can afford it when the time comes, send a few dollars to whoever is running against him next election.

The utter stupidity of these people never ceases to amaze me.

I used to agree with you ... back in about 1990.

My opinion of "these people" has gone downhill drastically since then.

They're not stupid. They're counting on us being stupid.

They, OTOH, are evil powerhungry totalitarians; lying is second nature to them. They know what they're saying is BS, but they can use it to exert more control over the populace, so that's what they do. See also "global warming" which they primarily bitch about when it's hot out, but they shut up when it's cold.
