Vanity/Question: Did Obama serve any time in the (U. S.) armed forces?

Posted on 05/09/2008 6:52:02 AM PDT by Mach9

Several days ago, on one of the Fox News nonprimes (possibly the Kelly/Hemmer 5:00 election show), a brand new Obama-declared super-delegate (sorry, I didn't get her name or state!) announced in answer to a question about BO's elitism that he could hardly be considered elite because he went through Columbia & Harvard on the G. I. Bill. This wasn't challenged. I've found no reference to BO's military service anywhere, nor can I imagine how the G. I. Bill could have helped him otherwise.

This dude is chortling through his anal orifice. Obama is a few years younger than myself. I am born 1958 and was the first group that didn’t even have to register for the draft (1976). Obama was in school—far far far away from the military.

More accurate, he went through Columbia and Harvard on the Affirmative Action legislation; got a little affirmative action help from the Law School administration to get on the Law Review and become editor also.

I served in the US Army Infantry from 83-87 and participated in the Army College Fund, it wasn't called the GI Bill back then.

Did Obama’s *father* serve in the military?

I’m vague on this, but under some circumstances can children of veterans get educational benefits as well?

Are you maybe suggesting that Baraq used a little affirmative action to help him along his academic way in school?

I don’t know if either he or his wife are proponents of quotas or not, but perhaps investigating his score to get into such a competitive school compared to others might be very telling.

Had it been U of M law school I would have bet on race being a factor for diversity reasons, don’t know about Columbia or Harvard though.

"Did Obama’s *father* serve in the military?"

No -- not ours!

Obama's sperm donor was a African Muslim - from a privileged family, who came to America to get an "education" enjoying the round heeled leftist women of America....

As soon as he was "done" - he dumped Obama and his mother and returned to a short lived corrupt political career and drank himself to an early death..

A bit off-topic, but I’m thinking Hussein should choose Sheets Byrd for veep. Give the ticket a nice balance, you know, young black racist and an old white racist. Brings true unity to bigots of every stripe.

But, Obama did claim that he was raised in a small Kansas town.

When on earth did he claim that? His mother was born Kansas but left the state when she was three. She spent most of her childhood in California and Washington, and most of her adult life in Hawaii. Obama himself was born in Hawaii and spent most of his childhood there until he went off to college.

According to Newsweek, “The Real Michelle Obama” was quite pleased to be an affirmative action beneficiary, but perturbed by her perception of white classmates at those institutions.

Newsweek: “At Harvard, she felt the same racial divide [she felt at Princeton]. Verna Williams and Michelle became friends in their first year of law school. She remembers many of their fellow black students worrying that white classmates viewed them as charity cases. But she suggests Michelle was not among them. ‘She recognized that she had been privileged by affirmative action and she was very comfortable with that,’ Williams recalls.”

As much as I love my adopted state, I cannot imagine anyone would claim they grew up in Kansas when they grew up in Hawaii. Other way around, maybe. I think Coldwater Creek is mistaken.

They are two separate things. You pay your $100 a month for the first year into the GI Bill to get your college money. The College Fund is free on top of that if it was part of your enlistment contract.

VEAP - Veterans Educational Assistance Program - was in effect from December 1976 through 1987 and required contributions which the government matched 2:1. The Montgomery GI Bill which replaced VEAP was implemented on 1 July 1985.

This kinda reminded me of something. This past August, I went to my 30th high school reunion. I grew up in a predominantly white, Jewish, upper middle class neighborhood in Long Island, NY. Throughout school, there was ONE black family. There was a girl from that family in my grade, her name was Amber. I wasn't in the same group she hung with. She was very smart and, I say this in the nicest way, very JAPPY as we'd like to say back then (Jewish, American Princess) in the way she acted and dressed.

She was there, at the reunion, 30 years later. She was very successful, ran a computer company and now dealt in real estate. I asked her what it was like to be the only black child growing up in a white community. I didn't expect the answer I got. She said that she loved her childhood...it held nothing but great memories for her. The problem was when she went off the SPELMAN COLLEGE...the famous black University im Atlanta, GA.

She said it was a horrible experience. She was treated badly, discriminated against, made fun of..BY OTHER AFRICAN AMERICANS! Nice, huh?

My four siblings & I received VA benefits from our deceased dad’s service in WW II - $110/month - tuition, room & board was only $1,400 at the time. We all went to private (Catholic) colleges in the early sixties. Our dad was not killed in action. He died of cardio-vascular disease.
