Chinese woman denied visa to see dying father in Connecticut

New Haven (AP) -- Congressman Joe Courtney is trying to help a Chinese woman get a visa to visit her dying father in Connecticut.

State Department officials say Hai Hong Liu failed to qualify for a visa because she did not demonstrate strong enough ties to China that would compel her to return.

Her father was seriously injured by a hit-and-run driver as he walked across Route 32 in Montville on April 14.

He's at Yale-New Haven Hospital and doctors have asked the family's permission to take him off life support. But the family wants to include his daughter in that decision.

The 2nd District Democrat has a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urging the State Department to show compassion and sensitivity in the matter.

She should just say she is Mexican and cross the southern border without checking in...

So rather than let in a Chinese immigrant who has lived under communism and may have come to loathe it and may be a better patriot for American ideals than many native-born Americans, they’d rather grant amnesty to 20 million socialists who came to the country illegally and whose goal it is to reconquer what they believe is their land?

Brilliant.

No brainer. Get a visa for Mexico, walk across, and catch a bus for CT. She’ll get there much faster than appealing our visa process.

Just as a side note, Montville, CT is where the Mohegan Sun Casino (and not much else) is located.

Our State Department? Our world is officially upside down!

Actually, it's in Uncasville. But, close enough.

It always galls me the treatment Slovaks get at the American Embassy here when trying for a tourist visa.
These are people who are going to spend thousands of dollars touring the US for a few weeks, then come back to the great life here with no PC crap or liberals.
They have to jump through hoops and produce hundreds of documents to prove that they are not going to the US to live.

I tell my friends to just go to Mexico, then they can enter the US with no problem.

And who IS compelled to return to communist China?

She just needs to say that she wants to do a job that an American does not want to do anymore.

The statement is poorly phrased; what they meant is that she could not demonstrate she had sufficient assets to return to China. (property, family, bank accounts, etc)

We had a similar experience trying to get a friend’s sister a visa from Israel to come to her New York wedding. No luck. It really is disgusting how we bring in 90,000 Somali savages, 20,000 Bosnian Muslims and leave our Mexican borders wide open, yet family members who play by the rules get the middle finger from our government.

Actually, I believe the statement meant exactly what it said and that you are mistaken. Proving one has no intent to live in the U.S. (i.e. will return to one’s own country) is a prerequisite for obtaining a non-immigrant visa if one is from certain countries. Having assests to cover the return trip is just a small part.

Yes, applying for a non-immigrant visa to the U.S. is really a ridiculous process. Once we were married, the embassy told us that my wife’s chances of getting a non-immigrant visa were much lower.

Actually, it's in Uncasville. But, close enough.

Montville is a town in New London County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 18,546 at the 2000 census.

The villages of Chesterfield, Mohegan, Oakdale and Uncasville are also incorporated as part of the Town of Montville.

Connecticut is filled with named areas that are not actually formal jurisdictions. For instance, Yalesville, CT is on some maps, has a named post office, but is really part of Wallingford.

sufficient assets to return to China..

not funds to cover the trip back; she was asking for a NIV but could not demonstrate sufficient property (assets) to make it more lucrative for her to return to China than staying in US.

Remember that the entire world hates US; but you can’t imagine the lines of people applying for US visas.
I know it, I live with them daily

No bureaucratic BS! I can bet had she gone to US she would never return to China.

Recently there was a family (father + 5 sons) applying to go to US to tend sheeps in NYC, because they heard there is a shortage of shepherds.
You just can’t imagine the extent (and lies) people will tell a consular officer just to get a US visa.

If it were a raghead with an AK47 they would have been allowed a visa so as not to offend these terroists.

But 32 is a heavily traveled highway . Dumb to walk across it .
