WASHINGTON - Cindy McCain says she will never make her tax returns public even if her husband wins the White House and she becomes the first lady.
"You know, my husband and I have been married 28 years and we have filed separate tax returns for 28 years. This is a privacy issue. My husband is the candidate," Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting John McCain, said in an interview aired on NBC's "Today" on Thursday.
Asked if she would release her tax returns if she was first lady, Cindy McCain said: "No."
The Arizona senator released his tax return last month, reporting he had a total income of $405,409 in 2007 and paid $84,460 in federal income taxes. He files his return separately from his wife, an heiress to a Phoenix-based beer distributing company whose fortune is in the $100 million range.
Sen. McCain is routinely is ranked among the richest lawmakers in Congress, but he and his wife have kept their finances separate throughout their marriage. A prenuptial agreement left much of the family's assets in Cindy McCain's name.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said Cindy McCain's refusal to release her tax returns gives the appearance of a double standard on the part of her husband.
"What is John McCain trying to hide?" Dean said in a statement. "Throughout this campaign, he has acted like his own calls for openness and accountability apply to everyone but himself. Now he thinks he can bring that same double standard to the White House."
Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton filed joint tax returns with their spouses and publicly released those returns.

It’s her and their legal rights to do so as they would.
I do not have a problem with that and frankly I do not think we need to see anyones tax return
I guess I’ll vote for McCain because he has a good looking wife who owns a beer distributor.
I have a LOT of problems with McCain, but this certainly isn’t one of them. Her forthright answer to the question is refreshing.
By the way, where’s Jean Kerri’s Form 180? And where are clinton’s medical and academic records? Was he kicked out of Oxford for raping a fellow student, or for doing absolutely no work and showing up for no lectures or tutorials during his term there?

Excuse me, Dr. Dean-mento - the lady has been filing separate returns for 28 years - this isn’t something new that she’s dreamed up to hide income, etc. from the electorate. I imagine the process of filing separate was at done the advice of their tax attorney or accountant - I might be suspicious if she’d filed jointly with the Senator up until, say 1996 and then began filing separately, but that isn’t the case.
Once again, Dean proves just how completely unfit he is to be involved in politics at any level, especially nationally.
He and his wife are GPs.

I do have a problem with it. Sounds like she is hiding something. Imagine having a creepy woman like her in the White House and one who is okay with having an affair with a married man with a sick wife. And she has other baggage.
There are worse reasons to pick a candidate.
I would like her even if she wasn’t hot. I think she is the best thing the McCain camp has going for them.

Did John McCain call for either Michelle Obama or Bill Clinton to release their tax returns? It’s not McCain’s fault that the Dummie’s top two file jointly. I seriously doubt that if Barak and Michelle filed separately that McCain would be throwing a hissy fit over Michelle’s return.
Now, Bill’s a little different - we’re talking ex-President here. How much has he raked in from the office. But I still think McCain wouldn’t have made a stink if Bill had filed a separate return.

U.S. Citizens should have the right to know what the candidate’s husband or wife’s tax forms reveal.
We’ve seen what a corrupt family can mean for the White House.

Nonsense. It happens all the time. There are plenty of people who have a terminally ill mate who they care for, but have a mistress or boyfriend outside of the hospital/personal care home room, who they then marry after the terminal one passes on.
Some people just do not like to be alone. Some bail out of the marriage before the person dies because they can't handle that kind of depressing atmosphere. Everyone is different and handles things like that in their own way. Considering McCains own history, being a POW and seeing everyone around him dying, I could see where he would a have a lot of trouble dealing with that kind of situation.
